Firstly please forgive me if I sound a little newb on this, but I really am very green at this stuff...
My questions are quite simple (from my newb thinking), is there a way to have 2 versions of MC on your PC?
Let me explain what I have and what I would like so you can better understand what im babbling on about. I have Beta now of course and many of the mods dont work yet as they are for the Alpha client. I am running these mods at the moment :
Modloader Beta 1.0_01, AudioMod Beta 1.0_01, WorldsOmega v1.0, Minimap093, BetterFood and ToolRepair 1.0 and Mixcraft texture (32).
These all run together perfectly and Im happy as they really make the game run nicely...
BUT
I have hunted through the forums looking at all the possible mods that I would really like to have, and almost every single one was working well in Alpha 1.2.6. I would really like to have a second copy of Minecraft in another folder that was running Alpha 1.2.6 with : MoCreatures, Humans+, Bunnies and maybe a decent texture pack too.
Please dont flame me or call me stupid, I am newb, self confessed, but there are so many incredibly talented and helpful people in this great Minecraft community I just thought someone might have an answer for me.
I do feel there are others with this question, but im the only one dumb enough to post it haha :smile.gif:
Please help,
Thanks,
TG

First off, texture packs work with any version of a client. [/cruelty]
Second, I'm with you. I want 1.2.6 version client until the mods I want come into Beta's release.
Yes you can, I believe there are a couple of programs in the forums that do this, try searching. If you can't find them/dont want to here is what you need to do:
1. Copy the .minecraft directory from Alpha 1.2.6 and rename it to .minecraft.1.2.6
2. Download the latest minecraft
3. Copy the .minecraft/bin/version file into .minecraft.1.2.6/bin/version overwriting the one that is there
When you want to play 1.2.6:
1. Rename .minecraft to .minecraft.1.0.2
2. Rename .minecraft.1.2.6 to .minecraft
When you want to play 1.0.2:
1. Rename .minecraft to .minecraft.1.2.6
2. Rename .minecraft.1.0.2 to .minecraft
This method will result in two different sets of saves but will always work, the alternative is to only copy the minecraft.jar and do the renaming, but this could corrupt saves if one mod adds "unknown" content to the saves, so only do this method if mods you are using DO NOT add extra information to the saves - eg: new blocks or mobs.
Yeah, I didnt save my old directories either so I only have Beta too.
Also wondered if there is a way to "halt" patches? So if I manage to find or get a copy of alpha 1.2.6 directories from somewhere, can I then stop it trying to update when I start that version of Minecraft so it always stays at Alpha 1.2.6?
Probably silly questions but just wondered if there is some way to do that...
Cheers,
TG

Get the latest "version" file off someone who has updated and replace the one that is in your .minecraft/bin directory to prevent updating to the latest version. This needs to be done whenever there is a new patch/version/release.
The other option is to not login when you start minecraft (ie: wrong password) then click "play offline" this will NEVER update minecraft, but you won't be able to play multiplayer.
This can be simply fixed by downloading one of xau's HD TP fixes. Basically if you have a older version like 1.2.6, and use it, it well send the game back to 1.2.6. Just search up Xau's HD texture fix or something like that.
Just follow Xau's step.
But you must IGNORE UNCHECKING CUST WATER AND LAVA. This well send the game into the latest version.
It would have been a lot easier if you had kept a backup. I have an installation for my Half-Craft base that reverts your update, but it has a couple mods already installed that you'll have to live with as well as a lot of texture changes. The terrain.png will be the first thing you want to replace with the most dramatic effect.
Just drag the contents into your minecraft.jar in %appdata%/.minecraft/bin and delete META-INF.
You are basically distributing minecraft with that download.. not a good idea.
Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions. Its a shame im so unPC minded or I could probably make these things work. I will try my best and see how I go :smile.gif:
Just a quick last question, people say drag this into your minecraft.jar file and it will change this and that back to XXX but when I updated (damn it!) it also updated some other jar files like lwjgl and some others, wouldnt we have to revert them back to pre-Beta too, to make it all work?
Told you I was newb, thats probably another dumb question :sad.gif:
Thanks again all,
TG
