Hello,

I opened my first server the other day and got it up and running fine. I made it so I could play with a few friends and possibly make it public later on. I understand that I need a few plugins to get the desired actions, etc.

First off, how do you install plugins? Is there a file I need that downloads them to my server for me?

Second, I've made a quick list of things I would like in my head:

-I need to be able to switch from creative to survival, fly, etc. as the owner. (maybe this is already standard and I dont need a plugin?)
-shops
-factions
-signs to make doors, or chests private
-commands (teleport to player, private chat, etc.)
-creeper disabled (preferably still explodes and causes damage, but no blocks are destroyed. i.e. no creeper griefing)
-any other plugins I NEED to run a successful server

I'll be reading up on the forum and watching videos to gain more knowledge, but if anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great!

Thanks,

Okay, i can help u:

-I need to be able to switch from creative to survival, fly, etc. as the owner. (maybe this is already standard and I dont need a plugin?) = This is standard. do /gamemode 1/0 to change between creative and survival.
-shops = I would suggest getting iConomy and Chestshop.
-factions = Well, plugin is named factions...
-signs to make doors, or chests private = Plugin named Lockette
-commands (teleport to player, private chat, etc.) = Get essientals, it has mostly commands you need.
-creeper disabled (preferably still explodes and causes damage, but no blocks are destroyed. i.e. no creeper griefing) = AntiCreeper will do it.
-any other plugins I NEED to run a successful server = WorldEdit and WorldGuard!

Do you mind PM me the IP of the server? I know how to use all of the plugins I just told you so I can help you out.

hey, i would defiantly say you need "essentials" this allows you to teleport, ban, kick all the normal commands you expect on a server (this also includes mobs, warps and homes, e.g ./sethome and then ./home to use it.) - this will also allow you to change gamemode ( /gamemode <in gane name> 1/0) 1 is creative, 0 is survival

also for making doors and chests private use the plugin "lockette" where you place a sign in front of a chest or door and type [private] on the top line and the names of people you want to be able to access it on the lines under.
commands will be covered in essentials up the top (/msg <ingamename> <private message>)

for factions i would recommend this plugin here: http://massivecraft....lugins/factions

as for shops i would add them at a later date when your server is fully established. if you want i could help you get started and show you more of the commands in game, but that is up to you.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I'm checking out some of the plugins now. I'll let you guys know if I hit a snag or need further help with the plugins themselves.

Thanks!

To download those plugins, I would need a Bukkit server from what I'm reading? I setup my server as specified from the minecraft site. Did I mess up by doing that? Should I just make a bukkit server and ditch the old one? My true colors as a noob are starting to stand out lol!

Lol, yes. All bukkit plugins require the bukkit server. Find it here: http://cbukk.it/craftbukkit.jar

I just wanna say thanks guys for the help! I got essentials and essentials group manager running how I would like and am now moving on to lockette and factions. After a few days of searching on youtube and the forums, I have everything set how i would like. I'm understanding everything a bit better now and should have no problems setting up the next few plugins.

Thanks!

well first make shure your running a bukkit server. thats pretty much the only way your gonna get plugins, unless you know coding. bukkit is a server client that lets you run plugins. if your usinc mac, you do the same thing to open it. for pc its much more complicated and i dont know how.
also, you can go to the bukkit plugin list to download plugins. the essentails plugin is very good, and a would HIGHLY recomend using it. also theres a plugin called factions, dont know if its exactly what you want, but there you go for factions. also, there is a command on all servers (as in bukkit and standerd) /gamemode [player name] [ 1(surv) or 2(create)] witch will change your gamemode.
the lokketee plugin enables you to place a sign whith [private] on the first line and the player name on the second, like so:
http://www.mediafire...bjax5f9m2hulgz3
witch will lock doors, chests, and furnaces.
teleport commands will come whith essentails
there are many plugins that turn off creeper greif, just search creeper on bukkit plugin list.
one good plugin that i recomend is tame grass, whitch will get rid of tall grass in a single command

bukkit download:bukit.org
bukkit plugin list:bukkit plugin list
factions:factions
lokketee:lokketee
tamegrass:tamegrass

ope this helped!
