Why do sheep regenerate colored wool?

My question is, why in the world do sheep regenerate dyed wool after eating grass? What did I do to it, inject "lime green" into its DNA or something? If I glued an orange to a pine tree, then cut down the tree and replanted its seedlings, the new tree wouldn't grow oranges. After you shear a sheep and it regrows its wool, the sheep should have white or grey or pink or whatever color wool it spawned with. That way, you still get the advantage of getting more dyed wool per dye (you get 2-3 wool per sheep so if you dyed the sheep you would get 2-3x more dyed wool) without getting an OP, infinite source of whatever color wool.

Maybe the Sheep eat the dyes changing the wool they grow into that color?

Minecraft don't have to be realistic now does it?

EDIT: I had a pen full of colored Sheep, I called them the "Google" Sheep :P

I like the system. Some dye is too hard to get to build anything with. This actually balances the shortage of some dyes. Dyes will have more purpose than just coloring wool, we just have to be patient.

--Well, I was gonna say cocoa beans is why but brown sheep exist. In essence, would you rather have a purely aesthetic block need lots of collection form the world? Actually, if I liked making things out of wool, I would keep it where they lost their color. This makes it too easy for survival.

if sheep didn't regrow colored wool i'd go back to breeding them and slaughtering them after shearing. i like that they regrow colored wool, no more sheep massacres for some lousy colored blocks. :Sheep:

Firstly, using real life arguments against (or for) anything in Minecraft is the wrong way to go about arguing things. Minecraft is not real life and, for the most part, does not seek to emulate it.

Now, about it being over powered...It really isn't. Wool is a purely aesthetic block and would take a fair amount of time to get any substantial amount unless one has an extremely large farm. In the amount of time one could shear all those sheep, somebody could have much more dirt/cobblestone/sand/sandstone/netherrack, basically anything naturally in the world. Hell, a decent (not to mention less space consuming and fairly easy to make) cobblestone generator produces more blocks than shearing sheep.

Blue Dye, AKA Lapis Lazuli, is a non-renewable resource. Would you rather have the sheep grow blue wool, or go mine for more Lapis Lazuli whenever you want blue wool?

Besides, everyone knows that dyes are non-toxic substances designed to permanently alter Sheep DNA.

I would guess each sheep has a byte which determines its wool color, so when you change its color it changes that data permanently. To solve this, there would need to be an extra byte holding its original color, which the wool would become upon growing back. It seems like a simple enough fix, and its yet to be fixed, so it's probably intentional feature- at least for now.

This.

Basically the people who think the game needs more "balancing" should go play some boring game that isn't minecraft or take the time to just make their own games. Especially games that are so perfectly balanced that the game is just the player doing his or her check book over and over again.

I agree with thread opener.
All we need is to make so that all color sources are renewable.
Add blue flower and make flower cultive-able.
Iris and some other flowers have blue color.
Or just invent something for minecraft theme.
Make so that lapis are there to make lapis block.

Agreed, they need to grow back white wool

I personally love that they regrow the colored wool back because I like the look of the lapis luzuli blocks and use them in decorations.

Because minecraft is a game with little to no realism at all.

Too easy for survival? Wah? It's insane that dyes are as hard to get as they are, but it adds a healthy level of challenge to getting them in the first place, I couldn't imagine having to do it every time I wanted a single batch of dyed wools. It doesn't matter if it is unrealistic, as we're talking about sheep that live for eternity and require no sustenance beyond grass, no matter the environment. But to suggest that it is potentially overpowered or "too easy" is simply silly. You have to use two pieces of iron to make a shearer, and you have to have thirty-some sheep to get a decent amount of wool, which depletes your shearer rather severely and eventually will require it being replaced.

If I spent half of the amount of time that I spent on my sheep, working on some actual "survival" aspect, I'd be able to have a forty-floor cobble tower with tree farms and a mine bigger than Texas.

Besides, you're talking about realism but not even considering the dyes. They're not liquids and the majority of them lack an innate moisture source, particularly those that require cooking. This implies that they're either a paste or a dust, and neither of those are congruent with dying the sheep in any practical or effective way. This implies that they are consuming it, much like they consume wheat. The natural chemicals and color patterns inherent cause a genetic alteration of the sheep's natural coloration, and thus it enters into their genetics which are passed down to children, and causes them to regrow wool of that color.

So Steve's a monster who tortures animals with genetic experiments in order to have a totally overpowered rug.
Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.
