If you want to play SMP and you keep crashing on servers try this below. It worked for me. (May not work for others? Not tested!!)

1) Start up Minecraft. DO NOT JOIN ANY SERVERS.
2) Turn graphics to Fancy and Render Distance to Short ***NOT TINY
3)Open Windows Task Manager and find javaw.exe under the Process tab
4)Right click on javaw.exe and set priority to High
5)Join the SMP server of your choice
6)Once you load in DO NOT EVEN MOVE THE MOUSE. DO NOT MOVE YOUR CHARACTER.
7)Wait a good amount of time (1-3 minutes?)
8)Try moving around and wandering around aimlessly. If you do not crash turn your graphics settings up back to normal. I'd recommend staying on Normal render distance. Far has not been tested.

If this works can anyone report back? It worked for me but I need others to let me know if it worked.

I've had bizarre luck just not playing maximized. If I leave the game small, I haven't been disconnected so far.

Why would that matter? I have no idea.

This bug is caused by millions of things.. it could be (from what i've seen so far)

Your computer ran out of RAM (i'm guessing thats yours)
the server ran out of RAM (that would kick everyone)
your standing in part of the map which is corrupt. Thats what I've got right now, so I have to move where I'm standing without logging in, or I cant log in... a challenge...
