Once again I present another one of my mob concepts, the Shallowbreath. This mob is inspired by qwertyz's Gascraft.
I'm also adding some extra info that I'll be using for all of my future mobs, called "Spawnrate". Basically it means how often it will spawn. I'll classify the spawn rate like this: Common-Pretty much the spawnrate of the pig and cow. Uncommon-a little rarer than common, but you will see at least a few each 2-3 days. Rare-This is the spawnrate that's equal to the slimes, chances are you won't see one for a while. Very Rare-You'll be lucky if you even see one of these mobs.
A Little Backstory Many miner's have reported strange things happening recently around coal deposits. These miners report a strange new mob that forms from the concentrated gases of blackdamp. Nicknamed the shallowbreath, this mob, made completely from gas, is believed to be extremely dangerous. This mob is hostile and will try to kill you. If you spot a strange formation of blackdamp that seperates from the main gas cloud, or if you see a cloud of blackdamp that has white eyes, use caution, as it might be a shallowbreath. If you spot one, please report to the nearest M.O.S.S. (Miners' Organization of Safety Surveillances) mining office.

ShallowBreath AI: Hostile, it will attack you on sight. Spawns: Near coal deposits or in blackdamp gases. (once again see qwerty's Gascraft thread) Spawnrate:Rare to Very Rare Drops: coal? Other: Since it is completely made out of gas, swords and regular arrows will have no effect on it. You can go through it, and it can through you. I've given it a unique attack. Instead of it trying to shoot something at you, and istead of it trying to hit you, it will try to suffocate you. The shallow breath will try to move towards you and get you to stand inside of it. When you are on inside one, it will be like you're underwater. Essentially, if you stay inside a shallowbreath long enough, you will drown. Since swords and arrows have no effect on it, what does? Fire is the answer. You can catch it on fire with the tool Flint and Steel, which will kill almost instantanously. Lava will also cause it to catch on fire. I'm not sure what the sounds it should make are. Maybe a sizzling or a hissing noise?
Here's what it could look like when it tries to suffocate a player.

I think if it gets too close to a torch, it will start to take damage. I think thats better than the flint idea, because no one really walks around with flint.

since everyone is talking about how it would recieve damage, then i have a question would it be hurt by a high level of light or would it be able to come out of caves, i ask because it is meant for spawning in caves and so i would suppose it would be hurt by light.

They should be lit on fire by almost anything, not only f&s or lava. Torches should also light them on fire.
That is an epic idea... I support 100%, But it should be that it only spawns within 4 blocks of exposed coal, and rare. (Possibly 10% chance of spawning near coal?)

This actually looks decent. As long as they don't instantly kill once your inside it or something.
Thank you. It shouldn't, since that would make it overpowered.

they should make a sort of out of breath kinda noise, gasping sorta noise
pretty cool idea, but they cant travel through blocks right? and can they go through 1x1x1 block holes?
I like the idea of them making a gasping noise.
I'm picturing it to go through blocks like gravel, sand, wood, and dirt. It cannot go through any other block type, like stone, cobblestone, and obsidian.

Thanks! I forgot to add the "spawnrate" part to it, but I was also thinking that it should be rare or maybe even very rare.
This is kind of iffy. Personally, I rarely carry flint and steel on me and would rather suffocate than be burned by lava. I LOVE the idea, but I'd suggest an aversion to any light. Maybe it wont go near a torch/lantern/glowstone, giving the player some space and time to kill it or get away.

I like the idea. Perhaps a light level of 14 (torches give off this much light) and higher will completely ward the Shallowbreath. An area with a light level of 12-13 will initially ward of a Shallowbreath, but eventually it will venture into that area unless you make it brighter.

I think it should spawn at a certain block level, like the slime does. I like the idea of the Shallowbreath being hurt by high levels of light, especially when near a torch. Thanks for the ideas!
Its a great idea hahah xD, it fits with minecraft and will make getting coal a little of a challenge ,because , literally finding coal is easier than finding wood , you only dig 1 - 10 blocks down and you are with 200 coal ( obviusly exagerating , but you get the point ).
Also i would like that shallowbreaths and slimes could do kinda like the spider jockey , but instead of one in the top of another , like a shallowbreath surroundin an slime.
I had the idea because of both of them being translucent , and it remembers a lot of the blue slime from the Aether mod.
Another great idea! Maybe it could make a very small explosion upon death, like half of a creeper explosion?

NO. Don't click New Thread. Read the rules. I don't give a damn how long or boring they are. If you do not, you will be subject to massive flaming and criticism by yours truly.
I'm liking this one as well, maybe if it were something that spawned only near ore of coal, this causes pollution of the air, which has now become animated by redstone energy floating towards the surface... It could drop gunpowder, if it's as flammable as you say, it should be just volatile enough to make TNT out of, coal is good too. As for the sound it'd make... Hissing would scare the s*** out of people thinking it's a creeper... what a bout a wheezing sound?

I had no results for my searchs.
and also, it looks great! this mob would totally creep me out, but that means it's good :biggrin.gif:
for you!
minecraft already has the undead and giant floating jellyfish. I think this mob would fit in reasonable well with the rest of minecraft.
I support, nice effort on your post as well.
