i've think this is a bug or something but when you first search for the recipe say golden apple a gray block appears and after that one search the gray block doesn't go away in fact it infects all the GUI's. the only fix i found it to disable this function (Don't Search Inventories).
P.S please tell me if this is bug or design.

thanks for the advice, but it turns out, i installed something which clashed with NEI, because it seems to work with a fresh download and install of the mod + minecraft

I think i have the same problem that garrus have but i can't acess to the option and when i left/right click on an item i drop it please help me i can't play correctly with that ='(
