A question now more important then ever. Do they only accept pre-generated structures, houses that are exact copies of the pre-generated ones or will we be able to construct entire apartment blocks for them to populate?
Well, after enjoying Minecraft for a long time I finally broke down and contributed back: exactly one adventure map. TRY IT NOW! YAY! Fall of Kingdoms

Villager apartment blocks are an interesting thought.

It could function quite like Terraria, with set prerequisites for a place to be recognised as a villager home.

Seriously. These "Achievement Get!" signatures were never funny, or interesting.

Houses, to them, are any enclosed space with a door. Meaning you can build them a house.

Jep that's so true what he said. I had a lot of buildings and that are the criteria for staying in. But what to expect from the guy who programmed this behaviour hehe XD.
I would really love to if it would be at last one furnit to be recognised as a house. Then you could plan out watchtower or animal barns, right now that's houses for them too =/

Wait, hold on... If villagers with breed to attempt to match the population to the number of homes available, and you can build new, recognizable homes for them, would it be possible to craft an entire city, with apartments and maybe even skyscrapers, full of NPCs...?

Of course there'd be no purpose for it, but now I wanna try it...

I think you've touched on the very essence of what is it to be a minecrafter :)

I love the idea of making a city/town/any creation feel lived in too.

I can say one think to you, it is possible. My village is rather large and they breed like there is no tommorow. I guess the main problem for it is they accept even the buildings as house which are not designed to be. Like a animal barn, guard tower, storage room and so on. Sure the AI doesn't see any difference in it, but If the requiremnt for a house would turn from "roof+door" to "roof+door+1(or 2)furniture" then it would be give a bit more freedom to plan a village or a city too.

It makes me a bit sad that 50% of my villagers like it more to sleep in the mud with the pigs and cheeps then in their own houses :_)

And i hope it doesnt changes...

Making a house its really cheap, of course i wont make a house for them like th eone in the picture but i dont want it to have stupid pre-requisites. What would they need, a roof to cover from rain, a door to protect them from monsters, more than enough!

Yes literally this, but you still can get it simplified, take these damned walls out! Then it's still a roof+door, and yes it will still be recognised as a house :P

I do think Beds should be added as what they consider a house, since it gives them more "real" traits as any home is where you can sleep... which is another thing I hope they can do in the future.

Wow... you are right

I guess, pre-requesites should be added... but still nothing to fancy, i dont want it like terraria, that makes you put specific stuff on it... it should be walls, door and roof, no matter what material, or probably exclude dirt and such...

I did a little experimenting, and villagers seem perfectly content to treat individual houses you make with a roof and door as a home. I also made separate 'rooms' within a larger building. The larger building did not have a door, but I think because there we doors WITHIN the building they figured that it was all one big house.

Could always make a tower block with balconies and a system of stairs OUTSIDE I guess.

I'm making an adventure map and I really don't want villagers to spawn inside my abandoned dungeons, ancient crypts and forbidden libraries. I hope there's some future way to stop them from spawning. =S

They do not spawn after the terrain is generated.

And in generation they only spawn in their villages.

So they will never spawn in your house.

The do not spawn in houses, they just get in if they can...

Unless you purposely bring them to your abandoned dungeon and they would " breed " and multiplicate.

Well unless you're building an "ancient crypt" in the middle of an NPC village, you've got nothing to worry about.

Now we wait
for the epic creations.

My question is, is there a size limit to how big the village can be?

Curious; what is their behavior in regards to a building that is closed with a fence gate instead of a door?

They still seem to get confused if you add a door to the default smithy, they will crowd around in the open area under the roof and won't actually go inside at night.

Is there any minimum size for the houses? I want to make one of those compact Japanese hotels.
