I was fiddling around with stupid TNT antics in creative mode when I discovered that the old explosion sound returned as one of the random explosion tracks.

I have tested this with both TNT and Creepers.  Is this a bug?  It cannot be the result of mods, as I am currently using Snapshot 12w06a.  If it is a feature, I don't think it is a commonly known one.

Perhaps Jeb is catering to those who thought the old explosion sound was better.  If this new sound feature is not a bug, then I welcome this change as it appeals to those who like the new sounds and those who do not.

I did a bunch of testing just now, with around 30 blocks of TNT. What I gather is that there are two or three different noises that it makes when exploding, picked randomly. Either the regular "Kerr-crumble" that's been going on for a while now or a really bassy version of it that is much closer to the old "Boooooom". But I don't hear the old noise itself.

EDIT: 69th post.

Maybe what you heard was a improved version of that sound (new one that sounds like the old one) because it is not present in the minecraft files anymore (though the code).

I'm not sure if this is the case, because I tested it with several hundred TNT and a few dozen creepers.  I distinctively heard the old sound and the new ones as I performed my testing.  Perhaps it is because I'm using the latest snapshot, since I also checked with 1.1 and I did not hear the old explosion sound in my tests.

The original explosion sound was not actually removed, but it was, like you said, "removed" from being used in the coding.  I went to the actual Resource folder in .Minecraft folder and played the individual sound tracks.  The original one and the same four new sounds initially released in RC1 are still there, but no new explosion track seems to have been added.  It can't be a bug as this change seems intentional, nor can it be due to mods as I am also using 12w06a, as previously stated.

The old explosion sound is still in the resources, under the name "explode.ogg". I haven't heard it since the sound change though.

If I were working on the game, I would've overlayed the old sound with the 4 new sounds, to give them all a more bassy tone. As is, the new ones sound more like a wooden shack collapsing than an explosion.

Here are the 4 current explosion sounds, as they are now:

And here they are with the old sound crudely overlayed on each one:

With some more sophisticated audio software, a better job could be done with these, but you get the general idea...

EDIT: Actually, listening to the new sounds with good headphones, they sound more bassy than the old one. Weird how they sound so weak through average laptop speakers, but the old one didn't...

I hope not. The old explosion sound was terrible.

It was more iconic, though. I wouldn't mind if it returned.

EDIT: In the new snapshot, there is definitely a sound that is much more like "boom" than "pop",
but it's not QUITE the old sound. Or if it is, there's been some sort of tweak.

All the old sounds were terrible, except the door sound.

Eff that noise. Iconic is worth about as much to me as useless traditions.

I liked the old Bang!

The new sound seems to fit other situations better: ghast fireball hitting a wall, setting off TNT from a distance, etc.

But a point blank creeper should bang like the old sound.

Iconic, maybe so. But it was just bad. It sounded like someone kicking a metal trash can over. Besides, even a pile of shit could become iconic if it was left around long enough and enough people knew about it. Nostalgia is the single worst thing to rely on when trying to measure quality I can think of.

I'm glad this sound is gone the most. For a long time now people have been complaining that the "oof" sounded nothing like their character, especially the woman and girls that play this game. By making the damage sound tied to the injury itself it is no longer a problem. However, I think that everything should have a unique damage sound, like fall damage has, instead of the current one. So you would hear a flesh slicing sound when a sword hits you, or burning when you are on fire.

I always never understood why people got upset over the oof. I mean, my character was a cat, so maybe I should've complained that it should be changed to sound like one lol.

I also do miss the old boom noise. It would make me jump when a creeper would sound it off. D:
Now its just, oh. creeper blew up. Continuing on my way.

The "oof" sound, while similarly "iconic", should not return. As aforementioned, it did not mesh with a lot of players' characters. HOWEVER, the new "breaking bones" sound isn't my cup of tea, either. It makes a good bit of sense when you take FALLING damage, but not in any other situation, especially when you're DROWNING. I would rather an androgynous yelp for most situations, a "thwuck" sound when you get hit by arrows, and a "hmghrl" sound when you're drowning.

I generally think the main reason the new explosion sound is hit and miss is due to how bassy it is. I have a half decent speaker system and a good head set, so the explosions sound amazing for me, but for some people, especially those with laptop speakers and cheaper headphones, the sound doesn't have the same punch.

I'm not sure why people dislike the old sound so much, but this change is, in my eyes, a fair compromise to those who do like it as it only adds the old sound as a complement to the new ones, which do outnumber it 4 to 1.  The new sounds have grown on me, but I feel it's also pleasant to hear the old ones because I tend to associate them with my first wonderful experiences playing Minecraft, which I hope is also the same in your case.
