Stevian Villagers
Simple medieval townsfolk with familiar faces

Posted Image

I'm a big fan of the original "look and feel" of minecraft, with its simple low-resolution textures, and slightly medieval/fantasy feeling. But the villagers have always left me feeling a little sad, and so I thought I'd make a texture pack, JUST to replace the villagers with something a little more.. familiar.

The Stevian Villagers texture pack is a very light pack, which only replaces the textures on the 5 stock villager types (as well as the unused sixth "villager"). Gone are the silly noses and unibrows, replaced with friendlier, more steve-ier characters: The Farmer, the Barmaid, the Blacksmith, the Village Historian, and the Lord Mayor. Each with their own unique style and personality.

Looks nice, could you maybe do some higher resolution ones?

Probably the best texture pack I have ever used.

These look great, so much better than the default Squidward Berts Neanderthals, but I like how they still fit with the default texturepack.

Not bad.  I have a soft spot for the silly big-nosed testificates, but for those who prefer to encounter human settlements while playing with the original Minecraft textures, these fit in with default pretty well.  They definitely look like Steve's people.

I really just made this texture pack for myself, and then I figured, why not share it? I'm really glad people seem to be digging it.

Let me just answer the couple of questions people have asked so far:

I have no plans at this time to make a higher resolution version of this pack. Like I said in the intro post, I prefer and use the default texture pack. I like the sort of 8-bit videogame feeling of those textures, it reminds me of a lot of the videogames I played growing up. I just wanted the villagers to fit in more with the game as I perceived it. (With it's swords and armor and such, minecraft has always felt a lit like a FPS/MMO version of "Legend of Zelda" to me.)

Since I only use 16x, I only made 16x versions of the NPC replacements. I don't use any mods, and I actually don't know how to make a higher resolution texture work. As Gl0u0m so aptly put it, my goal was to make "Steve's people". I've got no idea what a higher resolution version of Steve would look like.

I didn't like the noses. That was the reason I decided to make the pack!

I was hoping if you would post this (video) on the forum post

Done! Cool video, thanks!

I went ahead and added a "Videos and fan stuff" section to the main post. I realize this is hardly some amazingly comprehensive texture pack, It's low rez, it ONLY changes the villagers, etc. It's going to have limited appeal, I realize that. I'm not expecting anyone to show up with halloween costumes based on these guys or anything like that, but if these villagers do inspire people to do any more video reviews or fan art or anything, thanks to asdf722, there's now a place to show that stuff off!

Thank you for such a generous compliment. :RFlower: :RFlower: :RFlower:

To everyone else who I didn't respond to directly, thanks so much for the supportive comments. I'm really glad people are enjoying this pack. All the positive feedback really makes all the hours I spent making the post, and the graphics for the post feel worth it.

Damn right, this is fantastic work! Now that villagers multiply in the snapshots, The need for them to not be ugly is much greater!

I might make hi-res versions of these for 32x32 texture packs. I always use the Faithful 32 pack, and these skins fit great with the default look, so they'll simply be up-scaled and detailed; I won't change their overall looks. If you want, zebragrrl, I can toss the hi-res ones back at ya when I'm done, so you can post them here.

will the iron golem be included in a future update since he is, according to his png "villager_golem", a villager?

I am in the process of deciding that very thing. He does definitely seem to be related to the villagers (the nose and eyebrow area in particular), but his ability to be "built" by the player, means that skinning him up like a knight in armor (as I had originally hoped) doesn't really make a great deal of sense.

I'm still considering the issue tho. Right now I'm leaning towards skinning him somewhat along the lines of the Iron Giant or the Tin Woodsman from the Wizard of Oz, with some "Stevian" styling. I've definitely gone a bit Medieval with the theme of this set so far, so I'll have to think about this.

Wow, these are amazing.
I've always hated those default squidwards of villagers.

In my opinion, the iron golem isn't all that bad. All he needs is a little nose-reduction surgery.

Just checked, and the current pack is still working as expected with 1.2.2. I've updated the thread title to reflect that.

For those of you awaiting news, I am still planning to retexture the Iron Golem as a part of this pack, and that will be included in a future update. I ran into a bit of a snag the night I set aside to work on that, and actually ended up catching a bug with the way the Iron Golem's legs had been modelled. (I reported it, and jonkagstrom fixed it up in time for 1.2). But that bug put my texturing on hold, and I haven't had time to give it another pass.

As for a char.png.. aka a "skin", I'm certainly willing to give it a go. I'll probably end up with one "skin" based on each of the 5 base villagers. Let me get through the Iron Golem project first.

As for making the texture pack compatable with the "Random Mobs" mod... (asked by SgtCedric in another thread).. it's certainly doable, assuming that the mod can handle villagers. However, please keep in mind that doing that "right" will involve considerably more than just a little color rotating. Ideally I'd want to make several male and female variations, in slightly different roles, for each character class. For example the Butcher is now currently the barmaid, but if I added support for random mobs mod, I would make several different "service" workers... a bar-keep, inn keeper, and probably a chef. The blacksmith might become several Skilled-labor types, and the farmer would probably get more than a few variations of "peasant", etc. As such, adding that many new skins will be a major undertaking, and while I will definitely consider doing it, I hope people will understand when I say that it is not really on my radar at this time.
