I would like to make a multiplayer server, but there's one thing I want to be sure about. One of my pals said that to make a Minecraft server, you have to turn your own hard drive into a server. I was wondering if that was true or if you're given a server to use. I honestly have no knowledge of these kind of things so any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

You don't really "Turn your harddrive into a server," but you do run the server using your computer's RAM, which may slow your minecraft game.
I host a private vanilla server, in which my friends and I construct living minecraft communities that grow into living minecraft kingdoms. Once a kingdom is complete, we move on to a new area. PM me for details on joining.

I don't really think you can turn your hard drive into a server. But here's the wiki page (sorry, I forgot how to make a server...it's been a while)---> http://www.minecraft...ing_up_a_server
Hope this helps
