Awhile back, we had a chance to look at a video by Eric Haines which touched on 3D printing of Minecraft models.  Today, we have an opportunity to talk a little bit about what goes into printing one of these models!  We sit down with Alexander Boden, who goes into some detail on how these incredible models are created.  We get to see a model go from the game to the printing and prep stage, while Alex tells us about it along the way.  If you ever wondered how 3D printing worked - and wanted to see a Minecraft village go from "game model" to "real model" - this is definitely worth a watch.  Take a look!

Minecraft Updates - Lots of Fixes, Some New Features

Very recently, Minecraft officially updated to version 1.1. In addition to features like enchanting bows, wool-regenerating sheep that eat grass and host of others, the release also saw a number of minor tweaks, bugfixes and adjustments to improve the overall game experience. It seems that the most discussed feature recently has been the inclusion of a "flat map" option in the world generator, bypassing the need to build one in an outside editor. This feature certainly makes it easy to build large structures without the added labor of clearing out tons of landscaping for a base to build on, and even lends itself well to retro-style RPG map creation. I go over some of the new features in this video, and you can see the rest in the patch notes.

As an unintentional side-effect, it can also double as a simulation of a mass slime invasion on a hapless village - of course, it can be a challenge in its own right to survive this in Hardcore mode.

3D Printing, Minecraft-Style

Not long ago, we had the chance to show you guys some cool 3D printing Minecraft stuff; Eric Haines (of Autodesk fame) came up with a service that players could use to print out their in-game creations, player models and more, via the program Mineways. Once users make their model (or models), they can have their creations printed out, using a specialized service, and then proudly display their creations wherever they care to. If you ever wanted to have Minecraft all over your home, it is now possible to do so. While some applications of the program are fairly obvious (printing out some of your favorite buildings or landscapes), some players have begun exploring the idea of using landscape printouts and custom-built chunks to use in table-top games, like Warhammer.

I think I'll get a little Sacheverell model for my desk - he can endlessly stalk my computer monitors, looking for coal.

UK Gameshow Accidentally Mentions Minecraft

Posted Image

A TV gameshow in the UK, known as Countdown, has players take randomly chosen letters and attempt to create words from them to win points. In a recent episode, the randomly drawn letters just happened to consist of the title of a popular indie sandbox game; if you don't live in the UK, you can see it for yourself here. It goes without saying that the odds of picking these specific letters at random is astronomically small. Still, it gets one to thinking: what words could you make out of the letters in Minecraft? Feel free to show us some in the comments below! Back to Top

Survival - Coming Soon

Players of Minecraft - Pocket Edition have strongly expressed a desire for a Survival mode since the game was released, and while Mojang has commented in the past how the full PC title would likely never make it to the handheld, it seems that significant progress is nonetheless being made on a portable Survival Mode. Mojang's Daniel Kaplan had this to say:

Daniel Kaplan, Mojang said:

...we had an initial plan of making Minecraft – Pocket Edition more like Minecraft Creative. But alas we were wrong. We have read tons of comments and feedback and it seems like we made a huge mistake. You wanted monsters, resources, animals and more different blocks. This means that the initial code we had written didn’t exactly fit with the new plan where we wanted to add all the stuff you have been asking for. So we have been reorganizing, rewritten and changed the whole plan for Minecraft – Pocket Edition.

Posted Image

As noted above, Mojang plans to submit the new and improved Pocket Edition by February 8th, 2012, where it will go through processing and approval by the Android and iOS markets. Yes, it won't be long now before creepers can stalk us and chickens flee from us, no matter where we travel! In particular, there was emphasis that, while new creatures and blocks would be added, crafting will not be included in this update, stating that the UI needs some revision before adding such a comprehensive feature. However, they also enthusiastically added that updates should be more frequent (and feature-filled) going forward, so keep an eye out for them!

Holidays Over - For Some

As the holidays wrap up, most of us spent a significant amount of time putting our various decorations, new presents and such back into storage. However, one man's decoration refuses to be put away - and refuses to relinquish its Santa hat.

I'll spare you the litany of explosion puns that immediately come to mind.

Still, winter is in full swing, and not showing any signs of slowing down. As most of us are stuck inside from the cold, we find ourselves spending even more time playing Minecraft, and it brings to mind a question - what sort of awesome winter mods are out there? What are some of your favorites? Tell us about them! Back to Top
