Minecraft has hit 25 million registered users! As the game grows, so does the player-base; it wasn't even a month ago that Minecraft saw 20 million registered users - 5 million newcomers in a month is no small feat.

Earlier this month, we saw the wildly popular Minecraft: Pocket Edition clear 1 million sales as well; it quickly became the Android Market's most worldwide-downloaded app. The Survival Mode update to the game makes Pocket Edition more of an action-oriented experience, with health bars, weapons and animals included, as well as the addition of more blocks from the PC version of the game. Creative mode continues to see improvements as well.

It's almost impossible to really grasp the totality of how far Minecraft has come, and how much Mojang has grown. What will the next major landmark be for the smash-hit sandbox game, and the blockbusting team behind it?

Don't forget, we will soon begin our drawing for 100 Minecraft gift codes, given away for free! Want to get in on the drawing? Here's how:

  • Head over to our Facebook page
  • Give the Minecraft Forum group a "Like", and post your Minecraft Forum name right here
  • Sit back and wait

Keep an eye out this week as we reveal the lucky winners - you could be one of them!

This week, we take a look at the Clay Soldiers mod - currently by SanAndreasP, originally by KodaichiZero - which allows you to make armies of tiny men to do battle with one another. You can upgrade the soldiers with a wide array of helpful tools and weapons, create any of a number of different team colors (which they respond to appropriately - no team-killing), and pit them against each other in countless ways. Even a single item can make the difference between a clay man living to fight another day, and just becoming another mangled lump. Do you give them stick swords? Fire weapons? Even make a super-soldier to turn the tide against a wave of corrupted men? Try it out for yourself!

You can try the mod for yourself right here - fair warning though, you will likely lose hours of free time playing with these little guys! Back to Top

David & Toby cover this week's exciting goings-on, including Notch's BAFTA award, a new Minecraft companion app (definitely worth checking out), the MCX360 release, and a look at some of the outstanding features of the recent 1.2.4 update - take a look!

Notch to Make Space Game?

Notch recently commented on wanting to develop a "Firefly-like" space-faring game. Citing the classic "Elite" game as his inspiration, he is considering doing a game very much like it, "except done right."

Notch said:

"I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed."

He would like to begin development on the title slowly and solo, much as he did with Minecraft in its early days - then, if it got big enough, would begin development in earnest, as well as making the game available for early purchase, similar to Minecraft's Alpha days. Development hasn't actually begun on the concept title; however, since handing the reins of Minecraft to Jens "Jeb" Bergensten, Notch has begun exploring his options for creating new games.

If Notch began work on a space-faring sci-fi title where you could interact with your ship on a more personal level, would you play it? Tell us about it!

Release Date for MCX360 Revealed

For those of you waiting for the official release date of the upcoming console port, wait no longer - Minecraft will be available on XBLA on May 9th, 2012.  It will cost 1,600 points.  Awesome!

1.2.4 Update

The 1.2.4 update is now available for Minecraft!  Mojang has been hard at work squashing bugs, and the inclusion of the Bukkit team has allowed a larger list of items to be covered in a short time.  The changelog is listed below.  To update your game, simply run Minecraft normally, and when prompted to update, allow it to do so.  What was fixed for this update?

  • Chat history and much better chat editing
  • A few new decoration blocks
  • “Back” and “Quit” buttons to OutOfMemoryScreen
  • Made cats more realistic (read: probably annoying). I hope it’s enough to cancel out any joy you may receive from the previous feature!
  • Added a “minimal” debug menu for testing with. Shift+F3 to hide the graphs.
  • Made placing half blocks on existing half blocks (to make a full block) easier
  • Limit framerate on menu screens, no longer uses 100% cpu and make my computer melt
  • Fixed fatal crash for converted worlds to anvil, when there’s blocks at max height
  • Fixed an old bug with signs clearing text while you’re editing them in SMP
  • Fixed crash when logging in while there are blocks at maxheight at spawn
  • Fixed TNT ghosts in multiplayer
  • Fixed storage minecarts dropping enchanted items
  • Fixed crashes on invalid server addresses when joining a server
  • Fixed entities being uninteractable if they existed at login (Multiplayer)
  • Fixed dupe exploit with paintings
  • Fixed furnaces and dispensers dropping enchanted items
  • Fixed the “flickering” of chat as it vanishes off the screen
  • Fixed text rendering over items in the container screens
  • Fixed exploit with jungle saplings (turns other saplings into jungle ones)
  • Fixed launcher opening minecraft dir if the path contains a space
  • Fixed an off-by-one lighting bug
  • Fixed block transmuting (turning one block into another via pistons)
  • Fixed placing mushrooms in daylight, where they can’t survive
  • Fixed redstone lamps dropping powered block items when destroyed while on
  • “save-all” (server) now works even when you have toggled “save-off”
  • Fixed turning half-blocks into full-blocks while you’re standing on them
  • Fixed seed displaying in F3 debug when the seed is unknown (multiplayer)
  • Fixed villager texture changing clientside per profession
  • Fixed falling off ledge corners while holding shift
  • Fixed players falling when reconnecting to servers where they were previously flying

Special thanks to the new hires from Bukkit for this huge list of fixes!

While I was away at Game Developer’s Conference and a short vacation, the new Minecraft members Dinnerbone, Tahg, Grum and EvilSeph were hard at work fixing multiple bugs in Minecraft 1.2. The patch contains mainly bug fixes, but we also threw in a couple of goodies:

Chat history
Much better chat editing and controls (you can even mark text!)
Some new decoration blocks

XBLA Minecraft Name Decided, Release Date Coming

Friday, March 23rd - mark it on your calendars. Up until now, there has only been speculation and rumor on the release date of the sandbox indie console port, but soon - very soon - we will know exactly when we can play Minecraft on the XBOX! That's right, on March 23rd, the official release date for "Minecraft: XBOX 360 Edition" will be announced! Yes, the game even has its official name now, as they ramp up for the game's impending launch. MCX360 - quite an acronym! Don't forget, you can also get Minecraft goodies for your avatar before the game launches - show the world your love for Minecraft! Make them jealous of your Notch hat!

We have looked at some of the upcoming features of the XBLA release in the past, such as customizable textures and skins, a rather innovative approach to multiplayer support, and other great features. What will the future hold for the console port? While the PC version is miles ahead of it's console sibling, it very well may be the standard by which the sandbox port is measured.

It wasn't long ago that we saw mention of an undiscovered secret in the PC version of Minecraft; what may surprise some players is that the long-dormant secret was not a hidden recipe, item or anything to be found in-game. Quite the contrary - approximately every ten-thousandth launch of your game, the game title may read "Minceraft" instead of "Minecraft". It's such a subtle typo, and one that's apparently gone overlooked for years. "Minceraft" has been something of an underground running joke for a long time, so in some ways, it's not surprising to see it slipped into the game as a silent nod to the community - or at least, a typo made by them.

Of course, this means that I've been obsessively watching for it ever since.

Minecraft - Real-Life Architect Modeller?

Every one of us has built things in Minecraft, ranging from simple to mind-blowing - it is an environment supremely designed for creative building. So, it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the sandbox building game being used for architectural design planning, for real-world buildings in Sweden. That's right - Minecraft is being used as a medium for suburban renovation projects! While the game lacks certain levels of precision for minute details in planning, it is incredibly useful for various aspects of urban and suburban planning, such as dimensional constraints, building layouts and more medium- to large-scale design plans.

Will we see Minecraft be used this way in other parts of the world in the near future? Time will tell.
