Mojang Shutting Down? Not A Chance!
Some rumors have been flying around about a possible Mojang shut-down, but is there any truth to it? According to Notch, not a chance. Following an interview with GameSpot, Notch said, "Hopefully, we are going to keep making money at Mojang, but if we don't, that's fine. We just have 10 fun years, and then the last year, we'd say to our employees, 'If we don't make any money this year, Mojang is going to be dead. So you might want to look for new jobs.'"
For clarification, Notch isn't saying "10 years from today", that Mojang will only last until 2024. Rather, the plan is said to take effect when or if Mojang ever stops making a profit. The 10-year plan is in place just in case Mojang ever stops making a profit - which currently, is not a problem in the slightest - and that they have "money saved to have ten more years to come up with a new project, without making a single cent in that time."
For some, this may easily translate as a foreboding end to Minecraft and according to the source, may get some to thinking that the 10-year plan means that Mojang is only looking at 10 more years of being a developer of Minecraft. However, that isn't necessarily the case. Considering that Minecraft is one of the biggest games to date - with expansions to the PS4 and Xbox One consoles on their way, among others - it's highly unlikely that this will happen anytime soon. The 10-year plan includes the continuation of Mojang and Minecraft as a whole, and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. With the addition of Minecraft Realms, Mojang is still very much on course to stay in the game, and continue providing support and updates for everyone's favorite sandbox game.
As a celebration, fellow Minecraft developer 4J Studios has just announced the free Minecraft 2nd Birthday Skin Pack, re-released, following the releases of the Marvel Spider-Man Skin Pack and the Marvel Avengers Skin Pack earlier. Don't worry, Minecraft isn't going anywhere!
O_O
It was already developed by Mojang.
Stance for Internet Freedom -
Persson tweeted, on January 13th in 2012, that Mojang would "silently take down minecraft.net and mojang.com" as part of the 18th January protests against SOPA and PIPA. Persson said of the Stop Online Piracy Act and similar anti-pirating laws, "No sane person can be for SOPA. I don't know if we're sane, but we are strongly, uncompromisingly against SOPA, and any similar laws.
Mojang could shut down their company and Minecraft. So, they make 816.099 M SEK per year. That means Minecraft will stay until 40-55 years or 20-35 years.
This wasn't a rumor at all, you might want to read all of it and understand.
TL;DRing it is not a valid reason
Anyway, since Minecraft is just a game, there are numerous possibilities for it to be unsupported anymore.
The fact that it is a modern Lego type of thing is cute and all but may be lost in time that the players age.
A lot can happen in 10 years, and I think 10 years is more than enough for us to play Minecraft and get bored after a while.
While the possibilities in gameplay is endless, the fact that it get's tedious and repetitive (Modding capabilities are endless)
is just enough reason to look away from it and play other games. all of these can happen within that ample amount of time.
Let's just accept that Minecraft can't be supported by Mojang forever and that we can't support Minecraft forever.
It's just going to die, sometime in the future. But unless the last person logs out from playing minecraft or the last person playing hunger games servers gets bored, we still had fun while it lasted.
TL;DR: Neither us or mojang can support minecraft forever, the game and the community is bound to die sometime in the future.
Until then will we not have to look for other games.
Just like Sega never died.
Long live Sonic!!!
Thank god they still make systems and didn't sell out and put Sonic in a Mario game.
As do all Minecraftians.
I have had that happen to me multiple times ...And all involved Minecraft.
You can get one too!
