1.7 Sneak Peek: Sunflowers, Falling Particles
One of the curiosities of Minecraft has always been compass directions. The in-game compass has not ever pointed north, but rather at the player's spawn point. Most people generally assumed that east and west was easily determined by the sun and moon rising and setting, but other things - like cloud movement - always added to the confusion. So, who has the answer?
The humble sunflower!
While many of the upcoming developments of 1.7 have been kept under wraps, Jeb revealed this delightful addition to the game, which is confirmed to always face east! Very nice!
Dinnerbone also gave us a brief look into an upcoming feature which will help with immersion - impact particles! Basically, if you fall more than a certain distance, then you will generate particles from the impact of whatever block you land on. Sweet!
Keep an ear to the ground, because there is a lot more coming up, and you don't want to miss it!
There are two confirmed new biomes for 1.7: Clay Canyons and Redwood Forests. See the below link to read about all the confirmed changes in 1.7:

Give a gamer a fish and He'll complain about how the game is now ruined...
We still don't fully understand the function of the sunflower or other grow-able flowers yet, so I'm choosing to withhold judgement on how ruined the game is. If I may wish for a moment I'd like to see the Ocean biome get some much needed love in 1.7.
Small? Not really. Most of the updates we had were actually quite big. Might seem small when you pick at one or the other item. They're actually quite big. And obviously you'll wait months for them to make them run in your Minecraft world without removing items from your storage chest or to delete your world by mistake. Would you want that to happen?
"MOJANG! MY WORLD GOT DELETED! RAGE! RAGE! FIX THIS UPDATE NOW!" - Your response every week along with others. Best to wait than to rage.
These are probably better described as 'impact particles' as they are generated by your character impacting the ground. As to why... it's eye candy, like all other particles, are and will probably be disable-able as the others are currently.
They are free updates.
There are so many things that would be so much more helpful, yet they add all these random things that aren't nearly as helpful. Again, I do think this is cool, and could be a good addition, but just think of all the other things they could be adding...
Oh, and I also think that the texture does need some touching up on. It's not the worst thing ever, but it just looks a bit out-of-place.
Meanwhile at Mojang...
What should we call this update?
I KNOW! The Sunflower Update!
That is why I will always prefer Terraria over Minecraft. Terraria's updates add much more content in the amount of time Minecraft does. Just look at the new Terraria update that's coming along, IT'S RIDICULOUS!!! Not to mention that in 1.1 they added a whole new aspect to Terraria known as Hardmode and 4 new bosses!!!
I'm fairly certain the directional use of sunflowers is being overhyped here probably just for humor sake, also these are only one part of 1.7 ( a biome update, see the wiki for some of the planned features ).
Don't say that bro, it's their choice, don't update your minecraft if you don't want these awesome features
