DON'T PANIC -- Regarding "Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!"
We have managed to identify the 3rd party, who is well known to be trusted, as the source of the script. They have been contacted about the compromise, and have removed the malicious script being served to not only Curse, but possibly everyone with whom they work. They are still investigating the breach.
Curse takes security extremely seriously, and has removed all 3rd party ad partners until the investigation is complete. We will keep you informed of the outcome of this investigation. In the meantime, we recommend you run a malware scan on your computer. You can run a free scan at http://www.malwarebytes.org/. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.
At no time was any information in our databases compromised - your logins, user info, and all other personal information is safe and sound! We will continue to monitor the situation, just to be on the safe side.
I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing...
It's like when the health department finds one cockroach, and shuts the whole restaurant down.
I'm betting a good number of people have been, especially the people who say they don't get them.
A big reason why Macs don't usually get infected is because most people and businesses use PCs, so the hackers typically go for them. People who say they are immune are terribly mistaken for the fact that there just aren't as many viruses for Macs as there are for PCs.
The Stopbadware service works with companies like Google and Mozilla to scan websites that people visit. If the service detects what it believes to be malware the site is flagged and then when any user running browsers that use the Stopbadware.org service (chrome, firefox, opera...) the browser checks with stopbadware.org to find out if the site is okay to visit, if it is then it lets you browse fine and if it isn't you get the error messasge.
The error doesn't mean it has detected malware on the page you're trying to visit when you loaded it, it means that in the past it has detected malware on that page and therefore it assumes that this time that malware will still be there. However because our adverts were the cause (and our adverts rotate) it won't necessarily be the same on that page when you load it, and because you have premium you'll NEVER see adverts so you'll NEVER be at risk even if adverts did have malware, but the service checks before you even get to the forum so it has no way of knowing if you see adverts or not.
Yes, IDOI, you are correct, but unfortunately, the Mac users will go another day without learning their lesson.
If so I'm safe because I don't see ads but I'll check with malwarebytes just in case ( I also have avast installed).
OS Doesn't matter, it's the web browser.
Are you perhaps using a chromebook? The ChromeOS warnings are a bit different from the Chrome browser ones.
I don't think hackers/scammers really care about minecraft, they just want to make money off of high profile sites
For the record, straight from google, when scanning the wiki (Hope its okay to post this, I'm not trying to scare anyone but this is what it says):
Of the 553 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 70 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 2012-11-01, and the last time suspicious content was found on this site was on 2012-11-01.
Malicious software includes 2 trojan(s), 1 exploit(s). Successful infection resulted in an average of 5 new process(es) on the target machine.
However:
Over the past 90 days, minecraftwiki.net/wiki did not appear to function as an intermediary for the infection of any sites.
And:
No, this site has not hosted malicious software over the past 90 days.
So it is in the ads, and not in the website itself. I hope this gets resolved soon, but even in a worst case scenario where google scares off most people for the next 90 days, I'm sure the forum will get back on its feet
And put a link to it in the "latest news articles" that we see everytime we visit any page on the site (see up at the top of this page).
How are we supposed to find the post if you don't? This google warning made me panic bigtime. I've had other instances where "reliable" sites gave me a trojan virus in the past, and it was definitely due to their poor choice of advertising vendors.
P.S. The Wiki AND the Forums are both giving this warning (probably already stated but FYI for anyone reading this).
