This week, Mojang has begun the long process of separating the server logic from the client. They hope to make it easier to add features in the game going foward - essentially not having to program in game additions twice, for two functionally different "Minecrafts" - and also to make it possible for players to invite their friends to play on their local computer without setting up a server. While the intent to begin migrating was announced in the past, this Snapshot begins taking the first step into realizing it fully. Note - the changes are NOT complete, but the game should run normally.
Now, on to the changelog:
More fixes to silk touch and block picking
Wooden tools work in furnaces
Villagers spawned from spawning eggs will get a random profession
Updated language files
Miscellaneous editions
The download links are slightly different than prior Snapshots - the link below is the client ZIP, not JAR; it contains both client-side and server-side JAR files. The Server JAR link is as it has been for previous Snapshots.

Enjoy this first glance into some very exciting changes!
Ok, people please listen.
Besides being able to invite others into you're world nothing much will change.
Jeb has stated that the single player server will be a slimmed down version so as to not effect performance.
You will not be required to have the internet operating to use single player.
And there will be nothing to interfere with editing programs to create adventure maps.
Some files might get moved about and it'll take time for those edditing programs to catch up with the changes.
But by and large nothing noticeable will change.E
Don't you like people who PRETEND to know what they are talking about.
We are the ones testing the SSP with this version. And we are SEEING the performance drop.
Please DO NOT post anything until you have increased in brain mass.

I didn't actually see any performance drop at all while playing the snapshot, my ol' core2duo does a mighty 100fps in regular single player, and 100fps in this new snapshot.
I'm actually happy for this though, finally all the SMP bugs will get squashed.on another note, just had this really really cool idea.....
Snapshots should require you to first pass an IQ test before you can get to the download. Anybody who doesn't pass, simply can't download and test out the snapshot, those that do, are at least intelligent enough to make decent observative comments/bug reports about the snapshot.

Multi core machines shouldn't experience much of a drop or even have some improvement like mine.
Them old single core machines will die in a fire trying to play this snapshot.

Acutally thats a pretty good idea! No more people saying, "This messed up my world!" or something. It's a snapshot, why do you think they upload these things, so we can test them! I agree with the IQ test thing, even if you were just joking...
well i ran in to a bug with enchantment tables not working just like to point that out lol i dont know if this is where i post the bugs i find in the snapshot but im sure im right posting here XD
You're right, I'm sorry. I actually stayed home today from school (Sick) and one of my siblings left the front door open and let in like 100000 flies. They're all irritating me.
Although, some of the people on this board are truly nitpicking... whining over dropped cocoa beans?! All they do is make brown wool and cookies. It has about the same use as lapis.
apology accepted, i can understand considering when you're sick, and flies are irritating, especially when it's night, and my monitors are the only light in my room >.>
personally i think cocoa beans are useless. who wants s*** colored wool, and cookies don't heal worth crap xD
From what I see, it is a very nice set of changes. As a developer I see the value of the client/server code cleanup.
At the same time I look forward to the changes... and hope that it will be a month or two before we see the next formal release (hopefully 1.3 with the mod api), because there is still way too much impact on real-life servers every time a new release comes out.
Of course, it would be nice to have something useful to do with cocoa beans. Those cookies are pretty worthless, and not worth the trouble of making them.
This is gonna **** the server hosting company's off so much it wont even be funny. also.... I kinda like playing signal player with out ppl MESSING UP MY BUILDS!!!!
It's kind of obvious that Jeb should just take out the Single/Multiplayer feature until he has a good idea of how the community would want it. As in keep it in Snap Shots, but don't bring it in an official update.
I have been wondering for a while, since the changelog is apparently not to be fully trusted, how exactly people find out about all changes?
Do they try EVERYTHING possible with each update? O.o
Yes he is, and yes he will be. An always online game, is a terrible idea. I don't want to be REQUIRED to play online just to play Minecraft.. I DO NOT WANT my single player invaded by Server BS. Keep server garbage to multiplayer. leave single player, just that.. single player.. If I wanted a server.. I'd get one.
I have come to a conclusion that 90% of the people don't read things they reply to. you sir are part of that 90%. ONLINE IS NOT REQUIRED! that what the guys was saying so please don't be in the 90%. Alos whitelist the server if you want only you on it.

Also isn't it supposed to say additions, not editions? Might be wrong.

i hope you get well soon

I would think feature. Cocoa beans come from the jungle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobroma_cacao), so it makes sense.

You don`t HAVE to invite everyone you know.
You can purposefully destroy a wooden pick immediately after getting 3 cobblestone!

i believe they will release it next thursday, so i won't expect them taking requests for snapshots yet
