1.9 Updates: Possible Potions, Exciting Enchantments
Jeb has been discussing potions quite a bit lately - it seemed in the early stages of planning that potions would be brewed using a cauldron. However, recent comments strongly suggest that the cauldron is being replaced with a brewing stand (seen above).
In addition - Notch strongly hinted at an upcoming enchantment system, complete with an enchanting table or similar object (seen below). While he did confirm that it would cost Experience Points, have a 3-tier system and be "totally random", any other information on the topic has been somewhat cryptic.
With all the recent monster, item and biome additions to the game, one thing is for certain - 1.9 will be a feature-packed release!
Writeable books is probably the thing I want to see most! But these updates also look really great. Keep it up Mojang :smile.gif:
Enchantments come from "magic books" as notch says, but where do magic books come from? I'm guessing you can't make them, or it's at least very very hard to, but maybe you find them in the libraries of the Strongholds? It would give them a good reason to exist.
Enchantments are described as three tiered and random and, to quote notch:
That sounds an awful lot like the sorts of procedural systems they have in roguelike games. Possibly what you'll have is a pool of possible effects and possible strengths of those effects, and the game will combine a few of these effects into random spells. This way the number of possible spells is practically limitless and you'll never get books with duplicates.
I wasn't all that excited about it myself at first, but honestly Minecraft never really had a direction before, and to me that gave the atmosphere of it a blank slate to start with.
Basically, I'm happy now Notch gave the game an identity instead of just leaving it as an open ended sandbox.
also the enchant stand could be used for books you find. WHILE you can use books you make for "writing potions" using the potion stand.
But still no writable books
Pft, go back to Terraria.com then bloke, Minecraft will never be Terraria. Minecraft blasts Terraria away like a creeper high on lightning.
If magic is added, things will have to change for those with a moral compass. Hopefully we can continue to play the game, assuming the magic parts can be avoided. If not we may have to leave behind an otherwise acceptable game. Most likely I won't be able to discuss the game with those unfamiliar with it, and I'll almost definitely not be able to recommend it to others.
With that said, the rest of the additions look great and are already a lot of fun! I hope to see more of these.
tl;dnr Magic makes me
