This is looking like it's more and more to do with the much anticipated "Adventure Update" moniker that Patch 1.8 has been dubbed with.
I mean, imagine if you lost all your exp in World of Warcraft, Rift, or any other MMORPG if you died. That would suck! (Yes, I realize that Minecraft is a totally different game with a totally different playstyle.)
You're right it isn't permadeath, but i was explaining what it really was to people who thought it was permadeath.
If you thought that was bad if you read through the first 20-30 pages of this you would understand what I'm saying, and I don't think you read my other comments. I've said exactly what you said like 5 times and people weren't listening and then I wrote it again, this time a lot simpler. You'd have to be banned when you died. That's the only possible solution.
So perma-death is nearly impossible on SMP.
Also, I once posted a topic about how all armor is being removed as you can see, in 1.8 .
It will be replaced with a much more useful Ham Level.

I spent plenty of time playing Rogue 20 some years ago. I got tired of it and quit. I have zero interest in seeing that style of gaming come to Minecraft.

You don't gets stronger, the enemies get harder or something bad.
Perma Death: Permanent Death maybe? I do hope this is toggle. Like when you start the new world. You choose your toggle on and off.
Overall I think it will become %100 harder. Game gets harder and you lose your whole world on death.
Ouch... I won't be in caves as much then. I jump enough in those, and the fear of death will make things scare me more.

really, some of us just want to have fun hunting and building! Who wants to have to waste half your inventory on food in case you run low?

No thanks. I'd prefer that there simply be options to turn those "features" off if we don't want to deal with them.
it's doesn't really change the style much. if you don't want to gain xp, don't fight. if you like fighting, you can get more challenge by gaining xp since mc mobs are too easy to beat, just annoying. i'm in favor of every part of this update.
