“I’m a big roguelike fan,” explains Notch. “It’s really fun. The idea is that you level up really, really fast. You can grind away and level up fast if you want to, or you can just play as normal and level up that way. The longer you play, the bigger the risk of dying becomes. It’s the part that really works. If it feels like it’s too harsh, we might make it half or something like that. But the fact that you lose everything – you lose all your inventory anyways.”
This is looking like it's more and more to do with the much anticipated "Adventure Update" moniker that Patch 1.8 has been dubbed with.
I don't think we will be lvl 1, lvl 2, lvl 3, etc... I think the experience bar will fill when play, break block, craft objects, kill mob, harvest, etc... Probably You will get some little "upgrade" when you reach the full bar : maybe faster block breaker, more damage wih weapons, etc... And when you die....You have to restart to fill the XP-Bar. Perfect circle that fits on the mincraft style. The challenge will be to keep the bar full as long as possible. Maybe en achievement like "10 days without dying".
I once played on a SMP server that had a levels mod on it that was sort of like that and I have to say... I hated it and never returned.
So... you enjoy the game because you can do whatever you want, and because of that you're angry you're being given the option to do one more thing.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Also bigger.
This is good. This is probably a bad analogy because of all of the CoD-haters out there, but I imagaine these levels to be like killstreaks in CoD, you don't need them, they are just a reward for being alive. You won't have to re-grind your way through the levels (P.S., you won't have to grind for levels, Notch has said before he does not like that style of play, one of the reasons he was against achievements) because you won't have to re-grind your way through the levels. They will probably just be a bonus for staying alive.
Minecraft SMP has two aspects: Survival AND creativity. Survival because monsters spawn. But you do not beat the game when you make a 4x4 wooden house. You continue to strive, build, and have fun WHILE surviving. That is the essence of Minecraft: Creativity (toolbox) meets survival (gaming). Without the former, this would just be another crappy sandbox-ish MMO. Without the latter, it's nothing but a gimp level-creator.
That's why we play SMP!!!
What's this going to be like with an XP bar we can grind up? ANY BENEFIT AT ALL from levels will result in grindy, hoarding, selfish gameplay.
And what, I'm building my castle and start to die of HUNGER every 10 minutes?!? So I have to keep an inventory full of pork just to fend off hunger while I build? Notch, this is a TERRIBLE IDEA!
Yep, every single thing in your post, is a terrible idea. However, we know nothing about how the appropriate systems actually work. Leveling could be as simple as "start at 3 hearts, gain one for every level up to 10 max hearts, die and start over" and hunger might be the equivalent of fatigue from the Elder Scrolls series in that combat, and sprinting pull from it, in addition to a depreciation as time passes, and takes 3 hours real-time to deplete on it's own before you start taking damage due to hunger.
Wrong. The Adventure Update will not include the Adventure Mode.
I'm looking forward more to the NPC's and leveling just to see how minecraft will work with it. It's going to give me something to do other than build and mine. At least this way I have things to occupy me, rather than getting bored looking for diamonds after I've gotten a full stack.
Needless to say, I can't wait for this, and I'm stalking updates like a minecraft fiend.
Did they ever actually confirm that, or is that the public opinion based on a little bit of info?
Because from all that I've read, nothing has said that there won't be an adventure mode.
I could however be wrong, but that was just my prediction.
No thanks. I'll take the current SSP mode with NPC villages Etc *WITHOUT* the leveling, exp, and so-called "permadeath". I farking *H*A*T*E* RPG's. One of the things I like about Minecraft is that IT'S NOT AN RPG!
I assure you, I do not consider levels to be a "bonus". It's a royal pain in the ****.
More to the point, nobody but Notch & his dev team knows ANYTHING about what is *really* going to be in this update. All we've got is dozens upon dozen's of posts with people giving their opinion / guess about what it is based on a pcgamer article that has almost NO actual content. Yeah it's got a few hints but that's it. What's really needed is for Notch & company to stop drip feeding hints and innuendo about what's going to be in the update and spell it out EXACTLY what will and will not be in it once and for all.
Maybe THEN the shitstorm will finally die down. Or get worse, depending on what those details are. In either case dribbling little clues about it is doing nothing but causing an uproar and a flood of rumors and assumptions that have absolutely ZERO basis in fact.
