“I’m a big roguelike fan,” explains Notch. “It’s really fun. The idea is that you level up really, really fast. You can grind away and level up fast if you want to, or you can just play as normal and level up that way. The longer you play, the bigger the risk of dying becomes. It’s the part that really works. If it feels like it’s too harsh, we might make it half or something like that. But the fact that you lose everything – you lose all your inventory anyways.”
This is looking like it's more and more to do with the much anticipated "Adventure Update" moniker that Patch 1.8 has been dubbed with.
Apparently the replied text didn't want to show up. Basically, after some thought, I'm kind of liking the leveling up idea.
Nice to see somebody inject some reason into this God-forsaken whinefest.
Although I usually side with Notch, I'm with you on that one. Permadeath? This is a sandbox building game, not some Adventure RPG or something! Hunger would just make everything tedious. Here is my plan: Health (very) slowly regenerates, some items cure health but not hunger, hunger runs out very slowly, and more food items are available. No permadeath. Plus, now they will make NPC villages? Now it sounds like you will have more of a planned path than a freestyle way to play. Less choice. They should have stuck with a separate adventure mode, not an update. This could ruin the unique aspect that brought fame to minecraft: freedom.
It's more than likely he'll make it optional, so not to worry.
As you can see, perma-death means lose of leveling progress...that's all it means.
That is a direct quote from the PC gamer article. That is all.
End rage please.
Actually, more specifically the creative "mode" is actually the ability to fly and stuff "in" the adventure update, so it will still have all the features but you can fly, and such...
permadeath!? that makes me want to regret buying this game. Sure 1.8 looks cool and everything but you are taking this way to far. Tone it down a bit and maybe ill be ok with this
This is not a mmorpg. I agree with the person a few posts before this. i like this game because we get freedom to choose what we want to do and how we want to do it.
Better do so before the update, or else you won't respawn and will have to start life all over in a completely different generated world as a baby again. Ahahahahhaha--*savagely brick'd till unconscious*
Jokes aside, I'm pretty sure this will be obviously toggle-able, Notch isn't a douche.
People have their own opinions on what makes a game good, so don't bash them for being upset at potentially game changing new features. Mojang can do whatever they want with their game, but that doesn't mean everybody has to like it.
Let them whine, let them speculate, it's only natural for a person to be afraid of the dark.
I wont stop playing minecraft but i will keep a copy of "vanilla" 1.7.3 and a backup of all my mods to use just in case the perma death isn't optional in 1.8. .
Having said that I fully agree with both sides of this debate, these changes are not just a update they are game altering. As such i full understand why people are scared of these changes; but this game will go the way Notch and the team want it to regardless of what we think , it is his vision not ours.
So far Notch and the team haven't lead us astray , we will just have to see how the 1.8 update goes and move on from there.
