Notch just dropped a bombshell on Twitter: patch 1.6 will be coming to the Minecraft beta next week. While it's probably taken a little longer than originally planned, it's for a good reason. The patch was primarily a bug-fix update that would include only one new feature: an awesome in-game map system.

Then a few weeks ago Notch updated the timetable for the patch release as "not soon" because he wanted to do something else: add a fully functional Nether to multiplayer.

So we know that maps are coming, as is a working Nether, and there are a lot of bugs squashed to boot. What are you looking forward to most in the patch?

Hmm... Both those two things are just awesome! I would really love the Nether in SMP, but it's probably not gonna be fully functional as it's released for the first time for SMP.

About the map system: I love it! It makes MineCraft a lot more adventuring "based". The good thing is that you can choose wether to use it or not, but I'm definitely gonna use it.

I hope they fixed as many bugs as possible so Mojang can consentrate at adding new items, mobs, blocks and so on in the later updates

This looks great to me!

He's also said in his twitter he's added in TRAP DOORS! The possibilities are endless! I look forward to seeing what all the Adventure map creators can do with this :3

Mainly though, all the Bugfixes will be great!

maps are gonna be extremely useful for me. those gps mods lag my game and almost crash it for some reason, which really sucks

I'll never use the map, I use Zan's Minimap mod, and it is SOOO much superior than the stock one

A radar? Are you out of your mind? That's not exactly Minecraft-style. Didn't that occur to you?

The maps sounds cool. Who else has a bunch of paper saved up already? (At least that would make sense for crafting them.)

Nether in multiplayer sounds neat too. The extra resources without resorting to op-commands and portal travel aspect should be nice.
