Active Camouflage in (Vanilla) Minecraft?

Uploaded by slicedlime via Reddit, this video shows off something I did not think was possible in vanilla Minecraft: active camouflage! More than a mere color changer, it actively updates the player's color scheme to match their immediate surroundings, in near-realtime! Boasting 148,144 command blocks(!), this is arguably one of the most impressive vanilla creations I've ever seen.

From the Reddit post:

It has 148144 command blocks totaling more than 27 million characters that sample the blocks around the player who wears the predator armor, calculates the average color and gives the appropriate dyed armor. Lots of command blocks, yet it still runs pretty smoothly assuming that you give Java a decent amount of memory and that you don't stand among the commands blocks.
