NOTICE: Important Forum Update Information
Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, July 1st) at approximately 9:00 AM CST (GMT -6), the Minecraft Forum will be going into Read-Only Mode, while we back up the entire forum database, and get the new, improved forum software installed, up, and running!
During the maintenance period, you will still be able to read pages on the forum. However, you will not be able to post, change your profile, or make any other changes until we leave the maintenance period.
We anticipate that the maintenance will last around, or a little longer than, 10 hours.
We will update this post when the maintenance period goes into effect, as well as when it ends. We are very excited about the new forum changes, and think you will be as well! See you soon!
Though if you are logged out you can't see profiles.
You know we purposefully break things to anger people, right?
I will never understand why people categorically dismiss another group of human beings like one-dimensional caricatures. Believe it or not, we want an improved experience at least as much, if not more, than you guys. A broken, crappy forum isn't doing us any favors.
It's nearly impossible to summarize in one post just how broken the forum is right now, in its current state. The sheer amount of work the programming team had to do to get around a number of obvious problems (and loads more that weren't as apparent) was staggering. The new setup is, in every possible way that matters, better. It runs better, it's more stable, it doesn't eat friggin' posts, search actually WORKS, the list goes on and on. Now, part of this process is prioritizing things to change, fix, or improve. I'll be blunt here - making sure the forum actually runs is a higher priority than making it pretty. We can make it pretty whenever the dust clears, but if we make it look good but it won't run, how good it looks won't matter to anyone.
I don't think it's a huge leap of faith to assume that this overhaul is being done to give you guys a better experience. I'm personally very excited for the updates, and I can't see how anyone who understands how a forum this massive works couldn't be.
As a personal aside, casually demonizing and dismissing people isn't usually a good way to open others up to your way of thinking. Just a thought.
Anyway I was setting up the sparta joke and yes it will be worth the wait.
(Cough feedback title)
I don't doubt the good and helpful intentions behind this update. I am, however, still unconvinced of the competence.
You asked us to beta test the new format for you, but when we notify you of problems with it which we have found (which is the entire point of beta testing) you casually dismissed us, painting us as shallow caricatures who were attempting to "demonize" you. This is, as you point out, a bad way to get people to open up to your way of thinking, and the added hypocrisy certainly can't help either.
I absolutely believe that this update was for us, and done with the best and most benevolent of intentions, but there's a big difference between something intended to give us a better experience and something which actually succeeds in accomplishing that goal. A broken crappy forum is, as you say, not doing us any favors. You didn't make the old format broken and crappy deliberately, and yet it still ended up broken and crappy. And nobody here believes that you deliberately made the new one broken and crappy either. Nobody is accusing you of that. And yet, it that's how it turned out. It's a mistake. That's all it is. But the mature thing to do would be to learn from that mistake, to correct it while it was still in beta, and then publish the end result of the beta testing process rather than insisting on publishing an unfinished, broken and crappy beta version and accusing anyone who objected to that decision of being a hater.
Making things work is indeed a higher priority than making them pretty. But they were already pretty, and there was no call to change that. Making things work does not necessitate destroying the prettiness that was already present. However, making things work does necessitate making things work, and that is something that has simply not been successfully accomplished with this updated, despite the higher priority being placed on it. Perhaps if all the effort had been allotted to that task, rather than being offset by the additional task of implementing an aesthetic redesign which nobody asked for and which did nothing to further that goal, you might have succeeded.
Finish fixing the forum, and then publish the new version once it's actually ready to be published. That's all we ask.
Personally, I don't see anything massively wrong with the new software that would require a delay in deployment.
Fonts will be available in the new forum on launch.
It's not that big of a switch... Sure, it's new software, but it has almost all of the features that IPB has, with the addition of a few more useful things. Not to mention that it's more performance savvy, doesn't eat your posts, etc. This will probably be the final software switch for this forum for a long, long time to come. You'll get used to it
NO, THIS IS PATRICK.
It will probably remain up for a week or two after the live site is running Cobalt, but that's up to Curse.
