Notch mentioned another addition to the 1.8 Adventure Update - hold-to-charge bow mechanics.  We may very soon see the inclusion of variable-damage weapon mechanics as a result.  Whether this will be restricted solely to bow weapons or not remains to be seen.

We will continue to keep the community posted on updates as they develop.

This was originally my idea, I started a thread suggesting this, and it got a lot of support. Thats probably why it will be added.

This should mean nothing to do with a crossbow, especially since most crossbows are mechanically cranked (as opposed to being drawn by hand, which is where the variable power comes in). IMO all this focus on refining the combat system would be better suited adding other new content and changing other aspects of the game, but at least it's not Notch implementing a sucky version of a great mod...

I mean in the sense that it reads "Whether this will be restricted solely to bow weapons"
Does that imply that there will be more than one?

Yeah, good thing 100 other games didn't already do it before. It was a completely unique idea.

This should also to implemented for swords, i.e. "charging up" for a blow.
