One day, Dinnerbone wrote some really important information that changed the fate of humanity, and nobody knew it because nobody reads this text anyway, except the guy referencing it for updates. Oh, sorry, what was that? Snapshot? Oh right yes of course! Here we go:

NOTABLE ADDITIONS FOR SURVIVAL:

  • Book copying mechanics has been altered to differentiate the original & copies of books
  • Activator rails can eject entities from Minecarts

NOTABLE ADDITIONS FOR MAPMAKERS:
  • Added a spectator gamemode (/gamemode spectator). Not 100% finished.
  • Spectators cannot be seen by anybody but other spectators
  • Spectators can view inventories/etc, but not modify them
  • Spectators can go through any entity or block without interfering with it
  • Spectators can click on entities to take their camera
  • Spectators cannot use items, place blocks, destroy blocks or interact with blocks in any way
  • Spectators are only slightly buggy maybe sometimes

Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, we can’t fix it!

BUGS FIXED THIS SNAPSHOT:

  • [Bug MC-38944] – Joining Realms World "Cancel" Button Mis-Placed
  • [Bug MC-44521] – @a, @e, and any UUID references work incorrectly after a player dies.
  • [Bug MC-45050] – /fill … skull | Hitbox Bug
  • [Bug MC-45159] – Blocks with tile entities don't get removed when you clone / fill an airblock to their position.
  • [Bug MC-45453] – Items & Blocks placed in item frames are rendered incorrectly
  • [Bug MC-45470] – Items don't render on the ground properly
  • [Bug MC-45478] – Pre-snapshot14w04a villagers break crops but don't replant them
  • [Bug MC-45492] – Transparent blocks are much darker
  • [Bug MC-45554] – Two tall flowers variants are not generating.
  • [Bug MC-45763] – Some blocks are facing the wrong way if placed in an Item Frame
  • [Bug MC-45764] – Map will not show in item frame
  • [Bug MC-45795] – Villagers can not place or pick up any crops
  • [Bug MC-45847] – /summon Villager Farmer NBT tag canPickUpLoot will default to 0
  • And many more that weren’t on the bug tracker so we couldn’t mark them as fixed! Did I mention please report bugs? Thanks.

To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the “New Profile” button. Call it “snapshots” and check the box saying “Enable experimental development snapshots” and save. To switch to the normal version, you can select it in the dropdown at the bottom left corner of the launcher. Back up your world first or run the game on in a different folder (See the “new profile” dialog). Snapshots can corrupt your world, please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.

Blech. F3 mode seems more complicated now if they kept the coords labels with X,Y,Z instead of  Feet 100 100 100. So now if you don't know which coords are are what you're out of luck. (But I doubt that would ever happen unless you bought this game blind.
Hope won't make dat chickin kook.

To me the debug screen looks much better, way more clarifying now. Once I have found out were the coördinates were, I was and am very happy with the fact that the feet coördinates and the block coördinates are now finally decently seperated. And I think that the new crosshair and the Facing info provide enough help for experienced players (where the debug screen is mostly for, so I think) to let them realise soon enough that the coördinates are always written in XYZ.

Further some cool stuff there. The view through the eyes of the endermen does perfectly fit by their enigmatic character and the barrier block is absolutely handy for adventure maps and for some nice visual effects (floating torches / mobs anyone?). It gives a little bit too much shade in fancy graphics, but that is an already known bug.

Jeb really needs to add some kind of permissions for spectator... Such as /gamerule mobControl true, will let you control the mobs u spectate as AND add /gamerule mobDisguise true, Lets creative players disguise as well, but by using left click along with mobGriefing affecting TNT, and maybe a World Guard system (NOT laggy like dragnoz's)?

I think some new passive mobs could add to the 1.7 biomes as well, Maybe gazelles for the savannah? I think a roofed forest monster/boss seems fitting.... Idk why.

There should also be a 1.8 skin template that would NOT have left and right, however having layers, this would be a very convenient addition

Thanks jeb if you add any of these :D

would be awesome if spectators could control mobs?(would need to be given permissions or /gamerule or something)

I think Spectator is a good addition...hmm could it be used like a kill cam in pvp. Endless possiblities, 1.8 looks better and better with each screen. (still think we need a mini map in vanilla)

Something they forgot to mention (its shown in the screen shot though) is the addition of the 'barrier' block.  It's a completely invisible indestructible block.  The item icon is the red thing in the screen shot.  (Well the red thing aside from _Grum in spectator mode.)
Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Yeah... the barrier block is featured in the image itself but they didn't say anything about it...
It sounds pretty cool, and I bet the spectator mode has a lot of possibilities too.
It's not a really big change but they also added a new shader in "Super Secret Settings".
And if you "possess" a Creeper in spectator mode you see everything green.
1.8 is going to be really awesome.

How are y'alls FPS this time round? I remember last snapshot everyone was complaining about worse-then-usual-snapshot-bad FPS, which put me off from downloading it, did it get any better?

I'm watching a video about the new snapshot and it's awesome, you can "possess" entities in Spectator mode, and if you possess creepers everything turns green, and if you possess spiders you see everything like a spider, with many eyes. That's a new shader that can be seen in Super secret settings too. And if you possess endermen the colors are reversed (negative).
You can possess the Wither too, and villagers, pretty much every entity. It's really interesting.

I just noticed this:
Spectators can go through any entity or block without interfering with it

As in: Map makers / ops can now go through the map, and look around underground without destroying it or needing external tools.

Not mentioned in the notes:

You can no longer place two similar items into your crafting grid or a crafting table and "combine" them to repair them. So you can no longer put two half used picks in your 2x2 grid and get a full (or nearly full) pickaxe in return. You now MUST use the anvil and spend XP to combine items in this fashion - even those without enchantments.
