In-game names: they define who we are, and how the world knows us. What isn't often explored is, how we get the names we have.

I had the curious privilege of seeing the internet as we know it form into what it is today from my childhood. There was a dark time, a scary time, when the internet wasn't really a thing people knew about, or used. We had to do some scary stuff to get information back then. DARK things. Things like, "asking people questions in real life". Who even has time for that, right? How did we live?!

When it came time to have a presence on the internet, I went through a lot of names. The one I probably had the longest (before Sacheverell) was "Pretzel", a handle I used in a lot of MMOs and FPS games. What made me choose that name? I was probably hungry. Who knows. What mattered was that people knew me by that name, and it became a part of me. Our in-game names are, in a sense, who we are; it's not even what the name implies, or where it came from, but the association we bring with it. When someone sees our in-game name, they immediately think of us, the person - what we're like, whether we're friends or not, games we play together, all that good stuff. The nature of an in-game name isn't exactly rocket science, but there is one part of it that fascinates me to no end: the origin of a name.

I would never ask of you anything I wouldn't do myself, so let's start with the origin of my in-game name, "Sacheverell". In short, it came from a love for tabletop games. Without getting into all the boring details, it was the name of an entity in a particular game that I thought sounded neat, had a neat theme, and it was fun to say aloud, besides. In my voice-acting work, it was handy to have a name that resonated in a catchphrase, and it serves that purpose well. If I had to name one regret over it though, it would be how much trouble people seem to have with it, both in spelling and spoken aloud: I've seen Sacherevell, Sachaverall, Suchaverel, and countless other variations. Out loud, it gets even sillier. A wise man once told me that I should've picked an easier name, and in many ways, he was right. If I had stuck with something simpler - say, Pretzel - there would be a lot less confusion. To be fair, I've seen a lot of people mistakenly call him "criticsquid", which seems to bother me a lot more than it bothers him. Though, the idea of replacing a citrus-based descriptor with the image of a film critic still makes me giggle a little.

Forget me for a minute, let's talk about you! What made you choose your in-game name? Is there a cool back-story, with some deeper personal meaning? Did you take it off a cereal box? Smash the keyboard with a hammer? No story is too awesome or silly! Let's hear about your in-game name!

When I was a toddler a dog bit me on the nose

My parents took me to the hospital; I needed stitches

Seven stitches, to be exact

Whats more, I still have the scar on the bridge of my nose; It forms the number 7

I use the name Sevenstitch (or Se7enstitch, as I do here) everywhere I go on the internet

It's not just an "internet name" for me, It really is part of my actual Identity

My naming history, that one is rather random. Ultimately in my teen years I did use a generic well known name with a clan tag of |RSS| Ace. Ultimately I was a high level administrator of several Call of Duty 4 servers, and some Halo CE servers. These days were my best but well things do not last forever. The names Warace and Vestingwarace are console related, though, such probably will die our as I shift to the final name SeaWry.

Flutterwry was a oddball name because it was amusing, though not going into details with that, for don't need no MLP stuff here or explanation. Lets just say it was a corrupted/evil version of a once friendly/absolute pacifist equine.

Sea Wry, is double capitalized for a reason. There is several meanings behind the name. The first is obviously the fact I can soly be a extremely generous and nice person, or I can be really ill and hateful. Depends how people treat me; treat others the way you want to be treated. A sea can be gently and calm, or it can be a raging death machine. Primary meaning in gaming.

The alternatively is duo of 2 people or to say a couple. But due to personal reasons, I cannot give much more information on that or who they are. The bond they share is not understandable to most. Social meaning and aspect. Just two names combined into a catchy phrase.

Division from Sea Pony, where it gets really awkward. I have a knack for Generation 1 shoop be doos MLP, but ultimately Wry was a name I found, well I should say made such a name. Adding Sea in front of it gave it a interesting catch phrase. The Wry Sea. Which is actually a reference used much, Googling it finds such or to say "The Sea's wry smile". A parody pun and joke that fired up, but became much more.

Most end up refer me as Wry, though they mostly know these meanings, specifically the second one behind Sea.

Name has the meaning you want behind it, be it match personality or something you like; it is just personally created.

Unfortunately there is no deeper meaning or cool origin of my name. I was starting to play runescape (7 or so years ago) and i typed "nikko" in the name bar, "Nikko882" was one of the suggested names (Nikko was taken, obviosly). And I looked upon it and though it had a nice tone to it (in norwegian it almost rhymes), the name has stuck with me ever since. (I googled it and on the front page there was 1 or 2 that was not me). Thus I became "Nikko882".
Edit: I have no idea how i wrote skyrim instead of runescape...

My name came from when i was making a lego.com account. i wanted my name to be Taco123, but at the time, i could barely spell stuff. when i typed it in as Talco123, i thought that was how you wrote it. i later found out my error, but to this day, the name stuck. :D

Er.. I think you're mixing Skyrim up with another game. Skyrim came out in 2011 and isn't online, so there wouldn't be taken names.

Anyways, five years ago I was nine, and I was making an email address (For some reason, considering I was nine). First letter of my first name + my last name + 9, because I was nine years old. The name stuck a while, and while I now dislike it it's my IGN for a lot of games.

My IGN (and username that I use everywhere else as well) stems from a name that bullies used to call me back in primary school. Add, because I couldn't do maths for the life of me, Dux, because I don't know why, it may have had some sort of inside joke meaning to them, and P, because juvenile schoolboy humor.

A few years later, when I had to first create an account for some website (don't remember which), I was reminiscing back on those times and I thought the name AdduxP sounded pretty decent compared to whatever else I had in my mind at that time, so I took it.

I also used to have links to my Twitter and Steam profiles here but Black Ice is much more important c:

Mine comes from the name of a villain I made up. I just didn't make the first letter a capital and changed "l" to "1" :P.

I forget what thought train I went through to make up the villain's name. It might be some variation of my real name or something, or a backwards version of a random pokemon that just happened to be the first I could think of.

My name is the letters near the "h" in the keyboard with underscores at the "edges". Nothing more, nothing less.

My name comes after my username on Totaljerkface.com, which as you can guess, comes from the game Happy Wheels, which I used to play a lot back when I registered for Minecraft; the clothing on my skin similarly comes from a character in that game.

my in game, forum and all other pruducts i use is and will always be mcwurth.

at some day i had to make up a name and for what ever reason i just simply choose mcwurth. it sounded nice and since i am know as mcwurth. my close gaming buddy's call me mac or wurth often. had it for over 15 years now and i am not planning to change it ever. noticed there was another person alter who took the name as well but i think that person gave it up very fast after a bunch of friends kept refering to that person as that crazy ass dutch dude with the spliff in his mouth (gave up smoking weed years ago though).

The origin of my IGN and forum name first started out as Blue231 when I got my PS3...Made it up when I was 8, then fast-forward a few years I discovered Steam after I got Portal 2. An old friend of mine suggested that I switch the name to Bleu231, which I didn't know at the time was Blue in French.

And that my friends, is how my boring name came to be.
Whenever I post, I regret nothing.

Well my real name is Michael Deaton, and I started going by Mikey in middle school. I signed all my papers as Mikey D, and one day the teacher asked, "What's the D stand for?" because there were three Michaels in my class. Some student in the back of the room yelled, "Dooooooooooom!" And ever since I've been known as Mikey Doom. And I started spelling it Mykeh to be more original.

My name comes from when I was first making my Minecraft account. I was about 10, and really wanted to get a cool name, so I grabbed a glass of lemonade and sat under the nearby Alder tree. After about 3 minutes of thinking (me and my vast patience) I started to walk back inside, but I then tripped on a root and spilled all my lemonade on part of the tree. My strange 10 year old mind then proceeded to combine the words of Lemonade and Alder, to form Aldernade.

My name goes all the way back to 2nd grade. I was palying Maple story and I was thinking of a name for my character and I was like "Welp" and typed in Clone101 realizing that it was pretty stupid. When I made my Minecraft account (probably a few months after) I was thinking of a name with my brother and I thought that since it wasn't poopular that I didn't have to have numbers in it. Then SharkMonster was created (don't ask me about the Capitalized M) my password Does use a certain animal in it that inspired me (Dunno what came first)

So I thank Minecraft for giving me my username for the next forever.
Hope won't make dat chickin kook.

I got my name when I was watching a Garfield movie. It was called: "Garfield gets Real" and there were two Garfield-look-a-likes. One was Garfield, the other a cat known as "Prince the 12th." My 7-year-old brain finally decided on a name for that fun game called Happy Wheels (Don't bother yelling at me, I was allowed on most games. Yes, I am spoilt.), so I decided on Mitchthe12th.
