Mojam is happening even as we speak!  Mojang will be split into teams, and each of those teams will create a game inspired by you.  They have until midnight, Saturday the 23rd to complete their creations.  What does the community get?  They get to play the (wonderful) things they come up with!

Five other developers join Mojang on their project;
  • Grapefrukt
  • Ludosity
  • Oxeye Game Studio
  • Vlambeer
  • Wolfire Games
Mojam is an annual drive by Mojang, where participating developers must create a game in a very limited window of time, and you can see the entire process in real-time!  Additionally, viewers are encouraged to make donations during the livestream event; donations will go towards two charities close to Mojang’s heart: Block by Block and the EFF.

Everyone who donates will get to play the final games they create, along with any builds which are released during the ‘Jam.

Donate above the average contribution and you can get entry into exclusive raffles!
You get to decide the themes that will help inspire Mojang's games.  To do that, just pick your two favorite ideas from the following list. Tomorrow (Thursday), they will randomly pick two of the ideas for each game, and use them as inspiration.  Neat!

Mojang has a documentary, covering their first year as a company (from 2010), and the explosive growth of everyone's favorite sandbox game, and it's available right now!  Players who have Gold Accounts on XBox Live can see the movie straight away.  If you would prefer to get the movie outside of Xbox, 2 Player Productions is offering the documentary DRM-free; click here to get your copy right now!

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang is a feature-length documentary that follows the young company over the course of its first year as their profile expanded across the world stage, and into the homes of millions of gamers. Featuring insights from industry icons (Peter Molyneux, Tim Schafer), journalists (Geoff Keighley, Stephen Totilo), taste-makers (Gabe & Tycho of Penny Arcade), and players profoundly impacted by the game (Yogscast, The Shaft, Minecraft Teacher), the film serves as a time capsule for one of this generation's most unorthodox success stories.

Minecraft is the second feature from game culture archivists 2 Player Productions (Reformat the Planet, Penny Arcade: The Series - Season 1, Double Fine Adventure!). Funded through crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter.com, the production spanned nearly two years in locations across North America and Europe.

Congratulations to everyone at Mojang for making an incredible game, and being an inspiration for us all!  Be sure to check out this amazing film, and enjoy. Back to Top

Ah, Halloween - the season of monsters, costumes, and candy.

And more candy.

MCX360 recently knocked Modern Warfare 3 off the top of the Most Played game of the week, to utterly dominate the 360 Live Arcade charts!  What could be cooler than that, you ask?  How about a massive skins pack for your copy of MCX360?

To kick of the Halloween season right, Mojang is releasing a very special Halloween Skin Pack for MCX360 - all proceeds from purchased skin packs will go charity! The Skin Pack is 160 points (approximately $2.00), and every single point of that will go to good causes!

Skin creators for the pack include a number of different companies and artists, such as Rare (known relatively recently for the Kinect Sports titles, or if you grew up in the Stone Age like I did, Donkey Kong Country on the SNES).  All told, there are about 55 skins in this pack - that's right, 55 unique, custom Minecraft skins, for less than the cost of a soda!  That's a pretty sweet deal, and you get to help out some pretty sweet charities, too.  Neat!

Want to know more about the charities the skin packs are contributing to?  Click here!

Reporting bugs in Minecraft has always been an adventure.  With so many different places to post bugs, it's often difficult for Mojang to collate them all in a timely fashion.  So, what to do?  How about an official bug tracker!

Warren "EvilSeph" Loo, Mojang coder extraordinaire, brings us a new solution to bug tracking, in the form of  Mojira!  Although this new Minecraft bug tracker will mostly be community organized and run, it will be the official location to report bugs in Minecraft that Mojang will use. Please note, this bug-tracker will, at present, only be used for reporting bugs on 1.4.1 and later.  As 1.4 will release tomorrow, this means most of us won't be affected by older bug reporting, since everyone will be on the new update anyway!

EvilSeph had the following to say on the founding of Mojira:

EvilSeph said:

When we were looking for the perfect service to use for our Minecraft bug tracker, we had to focus on two things: it had to be powerful enough to actually be useful and it had to be relatively easy to use. If you have any experience with issue trackers, you’ll know that it is really difficult to find one that isn’t entirely developer focused and too complicated for non-tech savvy users to use. There are plenty options out there, but they’re either too powerful and complicated or too simple and watered down.

Enter Atlassian’s JIRA, their answer to issue trackers. Having used it extensively and successfully for the Bukkit project, I was fully aware of how powerful JIRA was. As such, it was a clear place for us to start evaluating the options we had and we quickly found out how flexible and customisable, as well as powerful, it was after some tinkering. With JIRA, we feel that we’re able to achieve the important balance we need that provides the community with the right tools to properly manage and report bugs, while continuing to be easy to use.

With that in mind, we sent an email to Atlassian, let them know of our plan to set up a proper Minecraft Bug Tracker and asked if they could help us out. To our surprise, they’re huge fans of Minecraft and immediately offered to help us out, providing us with a free JIRA license and whatever guidance we needed. In fact, they love Minecraft so much, they even used it to showcase their improved JIRA developer’s API for JIRA v5.0 in a cool video. So, it’s thanks to Atlassian for being awesome, supportive and lovers of Minecraft that we’re able to provide the community with a fantastic and powerful Minecraft bug tracker.

So, how can YOU help out with bug tracking?  We have included links below, so get to tracking those bugs!

The 1.4 Very Scary Update releases tomorrow, and we are all very excited about it!  Many of us have already played the pre-release for excessive amounts of time, but what if you wanted more?  Turns out Mojang is having a contest around the update!

"Contest, you say?"  Indeed I do, and here's how it goes:

  • Make a scary screenshot in Minecraft. It has to be a screenshot, not a piece of fan art.
  • Make it the the scariest screenshot you’ve ever taken. One influenced by fear, impending danger, pain, anxiety; that kind of thing. You can wait for tomorrow’s update if you like, or submit it right away if you already have something in mind.
  • Submit the screenshot to the Hej Mojang page before the end of October 30th, CEST.
  • Wait for us to judge the submitted screenshots.
  • Cross your fingers and hope you win!

Contests are awesome, but what about prizes?  We're glad you asked!  Mojang has a nice, real-life foam pickaxe, signed by the entire Mojang team, up for grabs as a prize!  That's pretty sweet, and not something easily come by, so definitely participate!

Minecraft is filled with plenty of scary moments, so get to taking those screenshots, and good luck to everyone! Back to Top

Block by Block; Better Building IRL

Posted Image

You may remember Mojang's project, "Mina Kvarter" (My Blocks) - a project that allows people to envision redevelopment of areas where they work and play, by using Minecraft as an architectural template.  Well, the project has been such a resounding success so far, that the UN is now taking an interest in it; Mojang is now collaborating with the UN, in a project called "Block by Block"!  Just like the formerly Swedish-only project, “Block by Block” aims to involve youth in the planning process in urban areas, by giving them the opportunity to show planners and decision makers how they would like to see their cities in the future.  Minecraft has turned out to be the perfect tool to see their vision come to life.  The three-year partnership will support UN-Habitat’s Sustainable Urban Development Network, to upgrade 300 public spaces by 2016!  The first pilot project in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s informal settlements, is already in the planning phase.

Mojang will be the main financial sponsor for Block by Block, and they will work closely with the UN to help reach the target goals. Lydia has been attending the World Urban Forum, announcing Block by Block together with UN Habitat. Lydia will also be working with our fantastic Minecraft community to support the project in various ways.  Mojang expects to have a site for Block by Block ready soon - keep an eye out!

Notch Interview at PAX

Posted Image

During PAX, there was an hour-long panel with Mojang on the topic of Minecraft - its past, present, and future.  Meanwhile, Minecraft founder Markus "Notch" Persson was being interviewed on his views on Minecraft, a brief look at the trademark fedora, his still-in-development title "0x10c" - and some of the exciting directions it is going in - and much more!  Want to see the full interview?  Click the image above, or this link.

An example question asked of Markus by PAX Senior Editor, Ben Kuchera, was: at what point did Notch feel Minecraft had gone from "just a game" to a complete success story?

Notch said:

I think it started when Valve posted about it on the Team Fortress blog. Valve is probably the company I respect the most, if they ever release Episode 3. When they actually posted about it, and said the reason they did it was to get in contact with me, that’s when I went ‘Oh my god, people actually care about it.’ Which meant a lot.

The numbers were already kind of high, it was selling well, but it felt like it could end at any moment. But that’s when it got some industry cred, and felt like a turning point.

Check out the full interview right here!

Minecraft - Pocket Edition Updates Tomorrow!

Don't forget, Minecraft - Pocket Edition has an update going live TOMORROW (September 6th, 2012)!  Keep an eye out, as we reveal the full change log soon!  While we won't reveal every change coming just yet, there is one thing you can definitely expect to see on your hand-held Minecraft tomorrow...
