Alright, little background, I've only ever done low level scripting and made a teensy roguelike in Python before. I've never worked with Java, but I've heard its very simple to use and I tend to have a knack for these sort of things.
Alright, so what do I want to do?
I'm looking to make a mod that adds a bit of horror and scariness into the game with new mobs. I know its possible to limit the chance of spawn and number of spawn per chunk, I know that making bipedal and quadruped creatures is possible, I know its possible to restrict spawning to light levels, depth and biome (along with block type), and hopefully theres mods out there that make the night time actual night time and genuinely oppressive instead of searingly bright.
I also know animals can make noises, which is useful. And can change states for their noises, such as endermen do when a character looks at their face, which means that it can influenced by things such as the position of the crosshair.
So questions, how will I lean to do all of that?
More questions, how do I influence mod behavior? AKA, can I have mobs change "states" dependant on proximity to the player, and then change their noises.
Say I wanted to make a mob similar to something you could find on the creepypasta wiki. Silent as a creeper until player proximity of x amount of blocks of x, y, z, where it then begins to emit varying frantic noises of groans and screams, and constantly scrambles to stay out of the players line of sight and move towards the player, and if the player is in a house it attacks walls (at incredibly slow speeds, rending cobblestone practically invincible) and shatters windows (preference to windows) and if it can destroys chests and beds etc, and only spawns very rarely and can spawn in large groups possibly, with an aggression behavior similar to pigmen (except the hostile state obviously not triggered by player agrression but player proximity, and then this "activates" all available mobs of the same type). And finally, I'd prefer if they do as most mobs do during the daytime when they catch fire, which is look for a suitable light level and hide there. Except I don't want them to catch fire, but simply all run to a dark place and stay there.
This is one example of something I'd like to create. 3D modeling, artwork and animation is relatively straightforward especially for a game like minecraft I'd imagine but, again, I've never done anything even relatively similar.
So, is what I've listed possible, and if so how do I go about it?
Perhaps I should read up on this. People can apparently tell that I've been playing since alpha since every cannon I make uses some of the very first designs
"You awaken to alarms sounding, lights flickering and walls crumbling. Where are you? All you can remember is a war, a revolution, panicked people and rushing of fingers against a keyboard as you laid down for what you feared may be the last time."
This is a survival/adventure map where the end goal is to get the hell out of a ruined, malfunctioning and melting-down facility an indeterminable amount time after 'something' seems to have left it derelict. All of these are going to be answered through play and its almost entirely up to the player to figure it out by investigating or just happening upon answers on their path. It's nearly about a quarter way done and has taken some time since I've been working on it all by myself, I can't be certain but it could have anywhere between 30 minutes - 2 hours of play depending on how much I put into it that I really want to. I'd love to put in 2 hours of content and I could, but it'd probably add exponentially more time to the project.
Mostly just here to ask what the interest in this sort of map would be.

I just want to point something out. See in Canada there, how some of the biomes line up?
There's Taiga right next to a rain forest, right next to temperate grassland, next to a desert and some mountains... Specifically, there's a spot in Western Quebec there where a small strip of rain forest is lined up right against the northern Tundra.
And I can personally say that there are plenty of swamps that dot the many lakes and rivers.
Taiga, Tundra and Jungle can and do exist near each other.
If they want to change the generation and make it more structured, they will. But there's nothing wildly wrong with how things are now.
Only by academic definition. Its not like theres a rainforest with tarzan and tigers in canada, it just means its a forest which receives a lot of rain.
Tropical jungles and forests cannot and will not ever exist next to Tundra or Taiga, and if they do then I think that will be the least of our worries
edit: as for people with the arguing capacity of a goldfish, i love minecraft, played and supported for well over a year and a half. But if you're going to be bitching about how much people are criticizing ILLOGICAL TERRAIN GENERATION you need to realize some people are just trying to give positive criticism to improve the generation.
I remember how people used to ***** before the Halloween update, and then after it would ***** about wanting the good old days. Then then the next update would come, they'd ***** about that, and then after it would come they'd ***** about the good old days of the Halloween update.
And that's why it's fun to know how redstone works while surrounded by people without a clue.
And why it's fun to make painfully simple things (IE remote opening door, lever turning a torch on or off.. ect) really, really way too complicated with as many gates and dead ends as possible.. so those who know nothing about redstone don't want to use it.. yeah, I'm mean.

pretty much this. it used to be just hit creeper, step back a bit, hit creeper, step back a bit.. then they started exploding earlier.
So like all things minecraft, instead of running scared we run as fast as we can at it as angry as we can get.
Sometimes when I'm bored I do this fisticuffs instead of with a sword.

Baffling.
