As far as minecarts, until a horse can do the things that my minecarts, minecarts with chests, and minecarts with hoppers do they will not be obsolete. Also, minecart systems can go underground and directly to a destination and are invaluable in the nether
I now use saddled pigs as transportation through the sky
so far only 1 wool has been struck by lightning, but it burned and then the wood underneath it burnt and the pig fell to an untimely death. Glass would probably be a good option for the top of each pig balloon so that this doesn't hapen
Bug name: Tamed pets disappearing when multiple of the same type. Version: Snapshot 13w16a Details: I had many horses and many dogs but only 2 cats. After a short period, all but a couple horses and dogs remained but both cats were fine. Every single animal was sitting/leashed.
Bug Name: Horse Riding - NoClipping Version: snapshot 13w16a Detail: When riding on an untamed horse, it can walk you through trees. You will clip straight through leaves and other objects. This does not occur after the horse is tamed as you will take damage like in a minecart.
I wouldn't mind streamlining all saddles into the new saddles. They look better and are craftable which is lovely for playing smp.
I don't like the "only tamed animals" request to leashes only because i've made about 6 different, useful devices that rely on holding farm animals in the air
Donkeys/Mules have the chest you can put in them (although it doesn't yet work)
My one complaint is that one of my horses can run twice as fast as my donkey but when i leash that horse while riding the donkey it refuses to do anything but trot and inevitably breaks the leash
Instead of occupying the same place as another block, allow them to be smart and overlap if non-standard block (EX: Chest, bed, fence) is put next to it to cover the space
the reason i did it like this so that it would be doable in survival (with a lot of effort with the pigs)
But yeah you really can do this any way you like. I know someone did an MC edit where they attached a pig in a minecart to a dangling pig and made a chairlift
