I don't doubt it, but how do other games implement it?

with massive development teams, using more compact and better languages, or with a complete and utter disregard for game balance. Also their games develop a lot slower. How many games have done this would you list as one of the 100 best games of all time? Think about that. I have read the 100 best games of all time list for nearly every major website and magazine, because im into stuff like that.

I cant think of a single game on that list for any of them that had a million options. After a while it just sort of ruins the ability for two people top lay the game and be able to relate their game experience, it isolates game players and undermines game balance that is crucial to a smooth, seamless game experience that progresses on a well defined curve.

Also, brutal nad unforgiving roguelike games are actually one of the most popular types of games ever invented, and particularly noted for the amount of both rage and addiction that they inspire, as well as the amount of complexity in gameplay. The modern version of RPGs spawned out of them loosely, and they are still very popular in markets like portable/handhelds, and in japan and many underground pc gaming groups, and for flash games and other smaller game formats. Even to this date, games like nethack and dwarf fortress and minecraft are STILL being made and have huge followings!

Maybe you shouldnt be such an elitest about how fun should be interpreted.
    See what I did there?
Don't tell me how to think.
Also I hand code web sites too. Guess what? im better than a wysiwyg editor. Period.
I also do all my math in college largely without a calculator. Am I better than my classmates? Yes I am.

Jesus man who **** in your cornflakes and made you king of fun and pride?
I enjoy laughing people like you. Ironically, I am having fun, and it sounds like you arent.
Maybe you should just learn to enjoy MORE types of things? One can enjoy building for the sake of building and enjoy other aspects of the process as well you derpy little derpington.

Another example: i try to avoid using samples when I produce music, and instead synthesize and record all my own samples. you know what? IM BETTER THAN PEOPLE WHO DONT.
Are you going to tell me that someone who just added a drum and synth track together are on par with me, someone who crafted every ****ing trigonometric wavefunction and went to the ends of the earth drafting out a complex chord progression?

You deserve to be smacked for even suggesting it.

next youre going to tell me that people who use calculators are math professors because of all the math they can do XD

Well, if I have already arrived to the place I want, I usually build a surface railroad :happy.gif:...however my point is that the nether is a great opportunity for expand the gameplay in minecraft, both "creative" with new blocks, and "adventurous" with new mob. If you want an example, I like some ideas from this thread, not all, but some of them are very creative.

He wants to keep the majority of the gameplay focused in the real world, with each 'alternate world' having specific functions that you must overcome to earn some system of reward there, like fast travel, or who knows what in the sky world.

Now think about what we are getting here. There is the main world with the large body of your work, you start there, get quests there, live there, visit biomes and mine underground, sail through oceans, farm and raise animals, fight through abandoned mines and strongholds. You also set your spawn point here and build maps of here.
Now, then there is the nether, it is a realm for fast travel between areas in your real world, and it has many bonus items in it but is not a important world in and of itself, and you never must rely on anything there, only get them as bonuses for specialized situations, which allows the psychological weight of the player to keep them in mind for what they really are: the other path between two points. an alternate road to take that is faster and more dangerous. Its general purpose is not to distract, but rather when you go into it you should generally focus on getting out of it asap to preserve the gameplay feel of it being FAST travel, not a place that is prone to distraction always slowing you down.
Similarly, we have the third world soon to be introduced, the sky realms. Notch has discussed the idea that you may be able to get here by sleeping in your bed, which would be quite an interesting idea. Other than that, we know very little of what will exist there, but my guess is that it will be something also specialized not to server as a distraction but a feature. it is a careful aspect of game design to now let your features become too distracting, otherwise they lose their intended purpose and dilute gameplay.

    Don't be so elitist.

    errmmmmm

Elitism is the belief or attitude that some individuals, who form an elite — a select group of people with intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes — are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight; whose views and/or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole; or whose extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom render them especially fit to govern.

No. I will be as elitist as I want. Maybe you should stop being so anti-elitist.
People who work harder, or know more, should be proud of it, should use it, and should receive more merit because of it. Don't just regurgitate illogical insults you heard other people use that don't even make sense.

Quite frankly, if you pay someone to build a house, and I build a house with my bare hands, my house is cooler than yours. That's just real life bro. What you think that basketball players should stop keeping score so that no ones feelings get hurt too? Then they could all have more fun! Derp.

    One amazing reason:

To stop the further pussification of games, they are becoming easier and easier. Everyone wants the rewards but doesn't want to complete the challenges to earn it.

The fact is, that whether the kiddies think so or not, working harder to get the same result makes it way more satisfying.

I only play survival on hardmore, and will only be playing on hardcore in the future.
    You know why?

Because the castle I build is going to BE WAY WAY COOLER THAN YOUR STUPID CREATIVE MODE CASTLE, BECAUSE I ACTUALLY EARNED IT.

If you don't want hunger, mod the game, because putting in an option for it just urges people to click it if they find it troublesome, then they will build a castle and only feel a slight twang of success, not the massive feeling of accomplishment you get when you struggled to fight and earn every ****ing block along the way, through terror and starvation, building your fortress one block at a time like a ****ing boss.

You people sabotage yourself into having an easier and less satisfying game. Game designers know this, thats why cheat codes are usually secret, not in the players manual.

@wintermuet I actually don't like very much travelling throught the nether, as it's not precise at all :sad.gif: I would prefer a nether with some others "hard" mobs and a new ore (just one)...anyway I totally second the season, especially after trying nandonalt's mod, that also has things notch promised us, like ecessive heat/cold dealing damage and show that is actually codeable :biggrin.gif:

as of now, notch and jeb are against new ores in the nether, but they may change their mind.
Also, what is imprecise about the nether? Build both of your portals from the real world and then connect them in the nether with roads, precision solved.

"Explosions should do heavy damage distributed randomly through your armor, and armor should reduce explosions damage to the wearer heavily."

Hm. What if was based on range? If you're up-close to an explosion, it basically doesn't matter, as the shock wave will basically hit every spot of you relatively equally. So maybe at close-range from the explosion, it distributes equally, but farther back, it randomizes it more.

That might be cool, since explosion damage is already based on proximity it would probably be pretty easy for the randomization of armor damage to piggyback on the same set of proximity variables :3
I worry that it would be too small of a difference though to be worth the extra programming.

I think we might be hijacking the thread though, although I think armor damage over time fits nicely into the general maintenance concept that hunger embodies in the game for balance. These systems let you ignore small occasions and only need to rest and heal after fight. I'm frankly tired of giving a **** about taking 1/2 heart damage and it hurting my life and armor. hunger has addressed this, now armor needs to for balance reasons. It will be nice to see :3

Honestly my favorite part of the new hunger system is that it takes care of my scrapes for me. If I take half a heart of damage from falling here or there, it doesn't build up into a dangerous situation like before.

One thing that needs to be done, though, is disconnecting fall damage from armor damage. It shouldn't damage your armor to fall, and fall damage shouldn't be mitigated by armor.

    I like your posts guy.
I also noticed and love the natural mitigation of small damage accumulation if you keep yourself well fed.

Here is my suggestion for how armor should be damaged:
    1. Only falls, projectiles, direct hits, fire, explosions, and lava should damage armor.
    2. Falls of 3 damage or more (one and a half hearts) should damage armor. Having more armor should make falls do MORE damage to the wearer (a bonus for light armor users, they are more able to traverse heights and less dangerous when falling into pit traps).
    3. Projectiles should do minor armor damage, and should only damage 1 armor piece at a time at random. Armor should reduce this damage to the wearer normally.
    4. Direct hits should do medium armor damage, and should only damage 1 armor piece at a time at random. Armor should reduce this damage to the wearer normally.
    5. Fire should only do minor armor damage, but damage all armor equally. Armor should not reduce fire damage to the wearer, but should reduce the chance to catch on fire.
    6. Explosions should do heavy damage distributed randomly through your armor, and armor should reduce explosions damage to the wearer significantly (creepers and ghasts would be more dangerous to your armor than to your health when you have high armor, which balances out surprise kamikazes).
    7. Lava should do heavy damage to all armor at once and armor should only have a very minor reduction of lava damage to the wearer.

That would make it that maintaining armor over time would be balanced out with the life regen in the game, I think.

More variant biomes would be nice.
    Maybe rare exclusion biomes?

Something like a small patch of trees that appears sometimes in a plains biome
Or a mini plains biome with a pond on the middle of a desert biome I guess it would be an Oasis biome?

It would be a nice touch if snow appeared regularly above a certain block height.
That sorta covers the snow capped mountains aspect of things and adds a slight touch of realism to the game.

absolutely true. oasis in deserts on very rare occasions (something like an oasis appearing once in 25% of deserts, and twice in 5% of deserts).

There should be a biome rarity system for terrain generation (assuming there is not) so that certain things like giant mushroom biomes or swamp biomes or snowy biomes or deserts were all fairly rare and this made portal travel more important. This goes well with the idea for increased distance of travel in the nether (I suggest making the nether take us twice as far as it currently does). Lots of little details, like snow falling on AND through leaf blocks and also on AND through fences, snow landing on stairs, etc.

also, one HUGE solution to the snow problem notch has been ahving, since he seems to be getting more and more problems with how to implement snow so that it doesnt suck:

    add seasons to the game.

Actually you don't have a clue about Notchs vision, even like I don't have a clue about it, so don't you dare to tell other people what to do.

Um, yes I do, because he has publicly said it multiple times over the past couple of years. I've been playing this game for a pretty long time, back when Notch used to talk to the community and tell us what he was trying to make. Before it got so big that he had to distance himself from the community because of all the kids and people telling him how to make his game. Yes he wants feedback, but this isn't feedback! You're asking him to remove or 'make optional' what he is using as a core game mechanic! Thats as absurd as telling him to make a toggle for life, lighting, monsters, jumping, item stacking, caves, or water! Quiote frankly, there is a point when 'entitled complaints' just become a bother to the designer, and this is an example of that I'm willing to bet! ALL YOU ARE DOING IS ANNOYING HIM AND MAKING HIM HATE US. HE USED TO ACTUALLY LISTEN TO US BEFORE PEOPLE LIKE THE ANTI HUNGER WHINERS CAME ALONG, AND PEOPLE LIKE MOST OF YOU HAVE RUINED IT FOR ALL OF US.

Follow the link in my signature for just one of many examples of his design commentary. There are many others if you look for them!

We used to be able to comment on his tumblr and he used to respond! He used to respond on twitter more, and even read the forums! Not anymore though. Because of **** threads like this.

    THANKS FOR NOTHING.

Maybe if you try giving CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE to notch instead of just complaining at him in unconstructive unhelpful ways, he will read these forums again someday. And no, well worded reasons why he should disable hunger or add guns or put blood in the game are NOT OKAY. HELP HIM MAKE HIS GAME, DONT TELL HIM HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENT GAME, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

Step 1. LEARN WHAT GAME HE IS MAKING, UNDERSTAND THE SOURCE MATERIAL (PLAY IT AND READ ABOUT IT)
Step 2. LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GAME TESTER
Step 3. BE NICE TO HIM BECAUSE HE DOESNT HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU
    Step 4. ACTUALLY HELP
(this is not directed at you only, its at a lot of people on both sides of the argument... but mostly on your side of the argument)

I still don't think it's worth going to the nether in the first place.Maybe some Nether-exclusive ore?

Notch originally designed the Nether as a dangerous high level fast-travel teleportation system that you had to tame and then use to get around for the purpose of traveling very long distances in short amounts of time. It was never very good for this though, because of how difficult the nether was to navigate, so he added bridges and structures everywhere, and enemies guiarding the bridges, to make it more traversable. Personally I think it is great for this purpose now, and I like the few things you can get there and the added difficulty, he wants portals to corrupt the real world into nether bricks around the portal too (he may not do this though because of all the ragers who would get mad that it changed their house, no matter how cool of an idea it is).

That being said, if you asked me, I'd say to change the world ratios from 1:8 to 1:16, so that the nether takes you twice as far as it currently does. It's a minor alteration though. It would be a good motivation to make even larger biomes than we currently have, though, which would be really fun, if traveling to a desert was such a hassle that you needed a portal to go that great journey in reasonable time, or had to make a map and some small resting huts along the way. I like the idea of great long journeys and adventures through great distances in the wilderness being part of the game, and it would make the nether even more important and a GREAT late game reward as well!

Notch has stated more than once that torches will go out and we will suffer heat and cold damage from overexposure to dangerous weather (such as freezing to death in the snow without proper warmth, and dying from being overburdened in a desert without water).

In survival mode, you will eventually have to fight for food, water, shelter, tools to survive, torches and coal to not die in the terrifying darkness (a la zork), you will need to mine for gear so that you are not stuck in a cabin forever, curled in a terrified ball in the dark every night. You will need to farm and explore, hunt and grow plants, log trees, mine the caverns to produce light and get iron and flint to relight torches. You will need to prepare with rations, a waterskin, maybe a fishing rod, flint, some torches, and a sword when going on journeys. You will need to rest and hide and sneak and be afraid, and occasionally repair parts of your home. You will have your save file deleted if you die (if you toggle the option, that would be expecptionally mean to force everyone to do because some people get very attached to their saves).

If you don't want any of this, I suggest you go start playing a different game, because this has been part of notchs vision for over a year and it isnt going to change because a few of you havent even PLAYED the style of game it is based on.
go play starcraft and complain that its not enough like world of warcraft or something :iapprove:

The fact that the lot of you come in here and ***** at notch for making the game he has been trying to make because YOU DIDNT DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING IT is NOT his fault. You need to suck it up and go play a game designed for you, because SOME OF US are waiting for the game he told us he was going to make and you guys are SLOWING HIM DOWN.

this is one of the large inspirations for the game.
    Guess what?
    torches go out.
you need to eat and drink.
    you need to rest.
its one of the single largest progenitors of modern RPG games.
it is one of the biggest influences in notchs design.
the game is famous becuse it is ridiculously fun.
    and REALLY REALLY HARD.
