posted a message on Does anyone actually use minecarts for transportation?

Minecarts are quite good to transport materials from mine into sorting and smelting area or automatic sorter and smelter. It is easy to get huge loads of various items when stripmining and it would be boring to carry them by hand.

I also try to connect distant resource rich areas with my home base, namely nearest mesa for hardened clay and desert for sand. If they are not too distant and if I have mules, then I usually use them. Limit is one minecraft day of travel with mule. If they are more distant, like 2000 blocks or I have not found mules or it would be unpleasant to build overground road to them or if I need more resources than fits into one chest, then railroad is more effective.

I build railroads almost always underground, usually 1x2 tunnels level 12. So I can find diamonds when digging them out.

There is huge difference between creative trolling and malicious griefing. One thing is set up a creative trap in other guys base, maybe making some small changes to statue he just built, making it look ridiculous, putting his valuables in his chests in some strange pattern, even stealing some (but not all, not even most) valuables or something like that. That is just rough fun. Absolutely other thing is just blowing up complete strangers base with stolen TNT, burning down his wooden bildings, spilling lava everywhere, killing all farm animals, breaking all chests you can find and letting items in them just despawn. That is plain old mean. Even if griefing is not forbidden as such.

Yeah, but that is not so easy. It would be quite normal to allow griefing, but with serious limitations. You know, old and good kindergarten rules. Pick someone your own size. Play rough, but only among friends. Stop when asked to. Troll, but do not grief. Do not ruin hard work. All those little rules which are not too easy to write out in right way.

And sure, if you do not like operators style of enforcing rules, you can always leave that server and maybe start your own. But of course, you should get your entrance fee or member fee back.

Like I said: I write only about allowed griefing, not about unwanted griefing.
In my opinion it is the responsibility of the operator to clearly state in the rules that griefing is not allowed, if he (or she) doesn't want that. On a server with all different kind of players you can not rely on so called gentlemen rules.
If a server doesn't want something, it has to rule that, simple as that. And if a server does not rule that griefing is forbidden, then griefing is allowed and part of the game. Even if the informal culture on a server is against it.
You can not expect players to play the way you want them to play, without stating that. Every player is different, has his own vision of what is fun or not and has the ability to influence the culture on a server. So if you want something from every player as operator, you have to communicate that clearly and without doubt.

I somewhat agree with you, but on the other hand...
First, we can not expect server operators to be lawyers, who are able to clearly state rules, what is allowed and what is not. And if they were, who would want to read such rules?
Second, it is actually quite fun and interesting to let rules develop themselves. Written rules versus unwritten ones. Both should be followed. If you join server, it is your task to find out, what kind of informal rules are there, and yours to decide if you will follow them, try to change them or openly oppose them so risking with consequences.

There are much more rules in life and play than laws and other written rules. They change and develope. Sometimes they are quite cruel or strange or just plain stupid. That's what life is.

posted a message on Stop doing "-Removed Herobrine"
I see "removed Herobrine" as message that they removed couple of things that were not there in first place, i.e, tested number of reported bugs and could not recreate them. Herobrine - nonexisting bug, removed - they are not working with this bug report any more.

As such, I do not mind. As long as developers see it as funny, I am cool with that.

posted a message on Smelt trash armor
Well, there is some sense in this idea.

Suppose you could smelt only golden undamaged and unenchanted armor... And that gold is renewable as it is...

Armor is not stackable, so it can not be automatically sorted, and you have to combine armor manually to get undamaged pieces. That makes farming gold this way much less attractive method. And if you receive then maybe as much nuggets as it takes ingots to create this piece of armor... I do not think it would be OP.

Problem is, it is not so logical to limit that smelting process to golden armor. What to do with iron armor? Or leather, chain or even diamond?

    Partial support.

Okay then, if I suggest that it will only work if you have an axe with enough durability, is it fine?

Bit better. But just a bit. And adds more and more questions. Like do leaves count in durability? Or how Unbreaking enchantment works?
It still means almost stack of wood using wooden axe and more than two stacks using stone axe. It means bit more planning but still treefarm with breaking one block.

Point is, all resources come with cost. And so it should be, that is part of the survival. With wood, part of that cost is your time and work you do and some annoyance you need to suffer. If you want something free, use cheats or play creative, there is nothing bad with them.

    posted a message on Backpacks
To make backpacks somewhat balanced there should be some strongly negative effects. Like:

    1) Backpack can be in only one specific slot, not in any other place in inventory or chest etc. Just to avoid possible multiplication of storage room.

    2) If you carry backpack in this slot, you can not wear any armor. Quite logical, if you are porter, you are not knight.

    3) Backpack gives max 8 extra slots.

    4) carrying backpack gives mining fatigue (you can not effectively mine with backpack), slowness (heavy backpack slows you down) and weakness (you can not fight well with heavy burden on your shoulders) effects.

    5) you can not ride horse, minecart or boat with backpack. Pigs are OK, just for LOL-s.

Such drawbacks would make backpacks usable in specific circumstances, but not always and everywhere. But given such limitations, they are not worth adding.

    OP. Way too OP.

Why? Because it makes things too easy.

Take down treefarm full of trees with just breaking one block? Balanced, sure!

Do not get me even started about griefing potential.

posted a message on What about Muskets? (Realistic, Balanced, SMP friendly) 130+ Supporters!
Interesting. Definitely well thought idea and it fits into minecraft world surprisingly well.

I doubt it would affect single player survival much. Actually, only reason I might use it is attracting mobs into traps using sound effect. It might create some funny trap systems.

In multiplayer, though... Well, first to be said is that I do not play multiplayer myself, so my worries may be way off the mark. But still, one bit dangerous and possibly game changing scenario could be two cooperating players with hotbar full of muskets could keep area or road or sea under almost constant fire. One shoots, friend loads.

posted a message on Building an amusement park, and looking for ideas for games etc.
Some sort of walking piano is part of any good amusement park;)

Simple one is simple, but you can elaborate it. For instance, why not walking piano that gives you (random) instructions, which note should be next. If you get 10 notes in sequence right, you get prize.

posted a message on Underground clay?
Well, to be honest, I could use bit more clay in my world. Bricks are one of my favorite building blocks and at the moment it is annoyingly cumbersome to get enough of them. Well, you have to mine clay blocks to get clay, then combine them into blocks again to get more into inventory, then break those blocks again, then smelt, and then combine again. Fact that you need to collect them under water and wander around swamps or rivers does not make it any easier. More work than any other building block I use.

At least you can get colored and uncolored hard clay from mesa, otherwise I probably would not use colored clay at all, which would make me sad.

On the other hand I understand that if you are not into bricks, too much clay may easily get terribly annoying. Maybe limit it by biomes? 10% of blocks between 33-56 in river biome? And maybe 5% in swamp?

posted a message on How do you organize your chests?
    Mainly three levels:

Junk chest. There goes anything. Usually no organizing at all.

Location/work specific junk chest: For instance furnace room chest, that holds anything connected with smelting.

Dedicated chest: there goes only specific items. If one type is not probable to fill entire chest, then there may be different, but connected items as well. For example, items crafted from dark oak wood. That includes dark oak wood planks, doors, stairs, fences etc, but not sticks or boats.

Partial support. Supporting other ideas, against rain/lighting interaction with redstone or redstone torches. Too high risk of unintended behavior and freaky bugs in redstone circuits.

Actually against suggestion 5 in full. Rain extinguishing torches will be disaster in villages: no torches, no light, zombies, empty village. Saving village without jailing everyone in is hard as it is, no need to make it even harder.
