Step one, find out the IP address of your router. One of the quickest ways to do this is to use command prompt. Go to start (or search): cmd
When this comes up, type:
ipconfig
Then a list of adapters will come up with their IP addresses and the default gateway. Home IP addresses commonly begin with 192.168 or 172.16.
When you have the full address of the default gateway, enter that into your web browser eg: 172.16.1.1 or 182.168.1.1. Let me know when you get to that stage.
Thank you mr. surviv0r hiding in a green box. I'm going to install the mod soon... im very nervous about the big day. it reminds me of the day my mommy died while giving birth to me and twelve others in the litter.
My goodness, the Internet is a very strange place.
No, it's not possible to use the same account multiple times, especially during multiplayer. The server wouldn't know what to do with two users of the same name.
I can browse the forum absolutely fine from my iPad with iOS 7.1.2 using either Safari or Chrome. Neither browser will let me enter text into the 'Reply to this Thread' box. Same applies for private messages.
Does anyone else experience this issue or know of a fix?
I have had great experience with Minecraft Realms so far and would highly recommend it. For simple setups it is the most straightforward and stress free way to get going. Beware when going for a host, some have been around for a while and some will be very new. The aerogameservers.com domain was registered at the end of August for example.
The best thing to do in this case would be to set up a domain name and point it at the shared IP address. That way your server address can be yourdomain.com:25566 or whatever port you're given. It's even possible to get free domain names: http://www.freenom.com/en/index.html
Are you saying you don't want to go back to the spawn point when you die? If that's the case, you need to craft a bed and sleep in it. Then, as long as that bed still exists, when you die, you will re-spawn by that bed.
Ah okay. This is where it could get confusing. 1&1 looks like a complicated and restricted system. It may still be possible but they may restrict stuff like this.
The subdomain is the mc. part of the server address. So, go and create a mc.yourdomain.com. If it asks you at any point where you want that address to point to, enter your server IP.
Ah okay, good. As far as I'm aware, you can set up mc:server.com:29506. I don't think it's possible to do just mc.server.com without the dedicated IP. Do you have a web host who gives you web space and a control panel such as cPanel or just a domain registrar such as godaddy.com?
You don't need a Minecraft account to be associated with a server to keep it running. To keep the server running you just need to keep the process running on the computer. From what you are describing it looks like you may need your brother to stay logged in.
One solution would be to save the server in a shared folder, which both of you can access, and then run it from there. Just make sure you don't try and run the server from both users at once.

First, create a subdomain: https://help.1and1.com/domains-c36931/manage-domains-c79822/subdomains-c37588/create-a-subdomain-a594923.html
