the port is the bit generated in cfg 25565 i think is default
if ur unable to connect to each other down to a router fault then use hammachi which opens a private vpn between the 2 pc's just use google tbh mate even ur router will off been posted with minecrack problems. hammachi isnt safe btw imo.

That won't help him as he's trying to connect to his friend's single player game. I doubt your instructions are going to help unless you give him a step by step list of how to set up a server and forward ports on his specific router.
Are you sure he's not giving you his internal ip? (IP's like 192.168.10.1)
Make sure he's giving you his external ip, ask him to give you it from http://www.getmyipaddress.org/
Then just pootis (cwatididthere) it into the multiplayer bawx like dish RANDOMIPHERE:25565
If that don work his port isnt forwarded.

After:
4 moar gigabytes of ram.
Result: Minecraft ran VERY smoothly, but then came along a 128x128 HD texture pack and better lighting and my fps dropped like a dead fly :/
