Try some tutorials by advanced modders, like pahimar, or the lectures of VSWE, wich include Minecraft modding and general java programming. It helped me out a lot, and I would have a mod by now if I wasn't such a procrastinator...
The edge of the minecraft word, also known as the farlands, is removed in the beta of minecraft. I think it was beta 1.6. So the videos where most likely made in a earlyer version of minecraft.

well, I don't have anything to do, so here is a tutorial:
1. make sure you have a fresh .minecraft folder
2. download the universal forge for minecraft 1.5.1 here: http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php/topic,7053.0.html
3. place all the files from forge in your minecraft.jar
4. delete META-INF
5. open minecraft, if everything went right, Forge Mod Loader should download the required files.
6. when minecraft opens you should have 3 mods installed: Forge, FML, and MCP
If this didn't work, please post a crashlog so I can help you futher.
wrong error file, did you even read the first line of it? Can you please paste this file here as well: C:\Users\James\Documents\My Games\Feed The Beast\Direwolf20\minecraft\crash-reports\crash-2013-04-12_12.14.51-client.txtps, block ID conflict, change the block ID's of mo' creatures to ones that aren't already in use. Well, yes, it does require you to check every mod property file for free block ID's but if it's worth it...
At first, you need to be premium to play Minecraft at all, but I don't blame you, I used a hacked version first too. So to anwser your questions, yes, you do need premium to play online, unless you can find a server were in the server.properties online-mode=false is set.
Hope it helped.
