Thank you, Captain. I seem to have trouble with my mouse wheel when scrolling downward, this is not the only program to give me such trouble. I have realized you are right and I am once again wasting a post. But thank you for your patience regardless.

I understand your worry about consequences of rotating the map. Perhaps it could be modified in the editor? Like indicating which panel of the worldpainter map you want to have the sun rise on. For now I will just manage as is.

This may be working as designed, but top of map exports as West instead of North. Sure I'm not the first one to notice, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Is there a way to make the brushes smaller than 27 pixel radius? Still a little big for what I need to do. Not trying to draw buildings or anything, just trying to make seaside cliffs without destroying the cramped bay next to them.

Back to mining after a long hiatus. Is it possible to make the window for WorldPainter (or any window for that matter) transparent so that it can be used to trace an image behind it? Even a utility that affects the opacity of individual windows would be helpful. Windows 7 user, if that helps.

hello again im very sorry for the long wait i had problems with my computer and i had to stop working on it :sad.gif: but im back on now and ill work on it as much as possible.

I'm very happy to hear this. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Due to your long quiet, I started crating a map of my own that may be useful to you. It is being made in Inkscape int he interest of being rendered in Minecraft, perhaps int he same way as the team who built the entire Earth made their map. I am just about to begin the elevation phase of my map, which already has continents, rivers, town cites and major roads. I've only just begun messing with street-level maps, including Mordentshire thusfar. PM me or email me if you are interested in my help.

Yes, in theory the program can create maps that large. You would need a huge amount of memory though, so in practice you could probably not do it. Search this topic for the word "switzerland" to find an earlier post of mine where I do some calculations.

Speaking of that Switzerland project....have you given any more thought to the ability to place separate maps side by side, importing and building larger and larger maps, almost like placing tiles next to each other? I'd imagine this would still eat up a lot of RAM, but it would be a step towards larger maps for those of us who are interested in them.

Sorry, I misunderstood the merge function, but looking at the program i see that is obviously what you meant. That doesn't actually help me since if I walked off my map in-game to make it large enough then WP wouldn't be able to open it for editing. (Unless I had 350MB of RAM). Not that I want to manually walk off the area of Switzerland anyhow....

I haven't given up. I still love the program despite not having an application for it. Our server is quite stable and everyone loves their little creations on it. MC Edit is certainly an option; in fact its creator is the one who told me about World Painter, coincidentally enough. I find his program to be better for fine tuning or fixing errors; its interface is simply not meant for macro editing like World Painter's is.

By the way, I will jump on board saying that cubic chunks is a fantastic idea and I hope it is implemented directly into Minecraft sooner than later. This would remove the need to lower terrain for more room abovehead as well as let us make those mountains we've been dreaming of! While no one would expect it to be a priority, perhaps some compatibility with higher elevations would be nice. Worst Case Scenario, it could just cut them off at 128 when loading on a non-modded client.

Not to be discouraged by the fact that I don't have 400MB of RAM to throw at my planned map, hows has the map merging been going? I don't really have any maps to try it with, but if I could build my mammoth piece by piece that would be better than giving up. Is there a way to draw a few hundred maps and put them together like a puzzle without exceeding the RAM needs?

Donation coming once my paypal clears. I've been here since early on and I think donating is the way to go. i think you will be surprised at how generous some folks can be.

What is the largest map you guys have made and what are the system specifics of your machine? Particularly, I'm curious about RAM and HDD space. While I love this program, I have stopped using it in an effort to create a working png from which to model the map I want to make. As this file nears completion, it is about the size of Switzerland (and a good sized file just on its own!) and 1:1 scale is of the utmost importance to my project. Has anyone made a map that approaches this size?

However, I can't make a file large enough to create it as a whole, i tried using the batch file command (Xxmg 1G, or something like that, I'm too lazy to go find it again). but it's not enough, does anyone know how I cant make a world big enough? Or if there is a way to attach multiple worlds?

    Thanks,
    Ssslouter

Though I have not been able to test it myself, I would think if you had more RAM, you could dedicate more to the program. If you have 4GB of RAM, windows is probably sucking up the majority of it, as well as your web browser, leaving only about a gig and a half to dedicate to WorlPainter. RAM is relatively cheap and I am hoping to buy a lot in the next month or so; then I will start making maps like the ones I had planned when I discovered this excellent program!

If there are no limits, that is...

I like the import feature, and LOVE the scale bar in the corner. Man what a handy tool! The other patches seem like good additions, like the beaches (though would be nice to add clay) and the flatten/erase upgrades.

I finally managed to dedicate more RAM to the program after some tweaking and pounding of fists. RAM is cheap, is there a limit on how much I could add to the program? It only lets me add about 1Gig right now on a 4 GB system. If I bought 16GB, could I dedicate the whole bundle? >:smile.gif:

Different sizes. The square areas are 512x512 or less, which is 4x4. The only problem I encounter is that the caves I create (not the cavern tool) are larger than Minecraft's draw distance, and you end up seeing the sun rise and set while underground. I've used 2x7, 1x8, 3x3, etc. I created a 12x12 for a friend last night. Using tools was noticably slow, and I wouldn't try anything larger than that if I planned on heavy tool use. However, using the ocean as a border, it would be easy to create a series of giant islands, seamlessly connected by water.

Oh man you just wrecked my day with that knowledge, the sun rising in a cavern. That puts a serious damper on any Underdark concept, or like an area I have planned for my map. This is certainly not a WorldPainter issue, I wonder if there is any way around that through Minecraft itself.

exporting schematics would be helpful as well.

I do like what you're saying, Captain, "drawing" large walls with a schematic/brush would be very helpful for making borders, etc.

What a great program! I believe it may work with MCEdit for those of us who are asking about attaching sections of maps together. I believe you could export the WorldPainter file to Minecraft, then open it with MCEdit, save it all as a Schematic, then attach it to another map.

I think the ability to import images as a basis would be very helpful. Heightmaps would be obviousl, but also colored PNGs to at least set the borders and coastlines would save a lot of time.

While trying to increase the size of my base PNG to make it 1 pixel = 1 meter, I ended up with a PNG that would have been almost 500GB. How is a 3 dimensional minecraft map that is 1000 times larger (the earth map) only 130GB?

I thought I read someplace that Minecraft would continue adding chunks until the map was 8 times the size of the planet Earth, is that correct? How big would that file be? Has anyone made maps of that size? How about not quite as large, but perhaps nation-sized maps, maybe one the size of Austria? If 1 block is a cubic meter, I suppose what my friends and I thought was far really is not. We're all actually within a kilometer or two of each other.

If someone HAS made a large map, what problems did you run into? Can it all be edited with MCEdit or another program before beginning? Or does it have to be individually walked off so the map being edited is big enough? Has anyone imported a map of their own, perhaps in a PNG file, that did not have to be "drawn" block by block in the game? Any help is appreciated.
