Live there and replace every non Stone Brick with stone brick . Restoring the stronghold to its former glory. For bonus points use triganomatry to find the other two strongholds in your world.
I go with stone tools with Efficinty One enchanted on them to put them on tier with iron but stone by itself is too slow and iron is as stated renewable and abundent.
Cries to self about gone stronghold. I did the oppisite and am currently restoring a stronghold and gotten two double chest of mossy and cracked bricks along with 38 levels from silverfish.
I never bother building an iron door. Mobs can't even open wooden doors. However, I hear that in a future patch, zombies will be buffed to be able to knock down wooden doors... hmm, maybe I should invest in some iron doors from now on. But doors are so boring. I either go with wooden for pure function or pistons for function and style.
Zombies can knock down doors now but only on hard.
I miss Alpha too but I can revisit my spawn and Nostalga all day long. I might be the only one who made one world for survival and stuck with it since Alpha. The terrain was simple and enjoyable but jungles and new content are always pushing out away from spawn in my never ending chunck walls from update to update.
Alpha will forever be missed but 1.2.3 is the Future.
