Might i ask, how did you downgrade the firmware? I was told by an iinet tech that it wasn't possible which is why I went out and bought another router. Decidedly more grumpy with them if it is possible.
It's worth noting that upgrading the firmware will reset the router back to factory settings.
So for wireless devices you'll need to recreate the wireless network they were connecting to.
Should work if you use the same ssid and password.

So pre this issue i was having some internet dropouts and after extensive troubleshooting one of the steps iinet recommended it take was to upgrade the firmware on my bob lite. (I think it was the 1500 firmware, I upgraded to the 1518) http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/iinet/firmware/BoBLite/
After updating the firmware I started having this error with minecraft however a different computer on the network was able to connect fine and i was able to connect to other internet services without issues.
You can't revert a firmware update. After all my troubleshooting I was pretty stumped knowing it was a network issue but another computer worked fine.
I decided to buy another cheap router to test it out anyway and all my issues stopped as soon as I switched over.
tldr:
For me it was the BoB lite router causing the issue, try replacing that.
My issue is now fixed,
Seems to have been caused by a firmware update on my bob lite 2.
Since you're with iinet might be worth checking with a spare or friends modem/router before you replace your nic.

Thought I'd update this with a little more info.
The server that seems to work for me is a lobby server so there's barely anyone on there.
Here's a wireshark capture of network traffic between my computer and the server for the duration of connecting and the read timeout. https://dl.dropboxus...nication.pcapng
I know it's bad form to not make a new topic but I'd like to chime in and say that this is also happening to me. (So if anyone comes up with a fix I'd love to see it)
I connect to a server and get a few lines of chat then it's like all data from the server stops, then you get the timeout error.
I staff on a server network running a few servers and one of them never seems to have the issue and the others all have the issue. (I'm looking into if there's any differences with the server software on these and will post if I have win)
Every other minecraft server I've tried joining seems to have the issue after varying degrees of time.
Here's the steps I have so far taken to try and resolve the issue. (None have been successful)
Reinstall java 32 bit
Reinstall minecraft
Disable windows firewall
Disable antivirus shields
Disable router firewall
Remove java with javaRa and some other program that are supposed to do a more thorough uninstall (and reinstall)
Clear java cache
Install 32 and 64 bit java in varying orders
Changing the receive and transmit buffer values as mentioned in this thread
Reinstall windows - (somehow still didn't fix it)
It works fine on my partners computer on the same network. My thought is perhaps there is a java setting that somehow got selected or is the default in a new install that most servers do not like.
If there's any questions I can answer or any solutions I can try for help get this one resolved I will do what i can.
Thanks.

it's hidden away on a server....
mc.eternalhavoc.net (sydney based)
server is still running 1.1 though, waiting on a bukkit update. i'll post on here when the server gets updated i guess.
sometime tonight I'll post up schematics for the example cell in the screens (with signs) and 4 cells together so you folks can see you they stack.
If anyone can offer improvements on my hodge podge circuitry let me know =]
how often does it mess up and you have to clean up a bunch of cobblestone?
cannot happen, the lava and water are separated by a glass wall, if they did somehow both flow at once (also prevented by the latches holding each other closed) you'd just get water backlit through glass with lava
Have just looked over it and removed the and gates on the left of the second screenshot (also visible in the third). other than that i think the main issue is timing.
the signal for the cell to become used must be received before the colour signal. i'll look into instant wire, and changing my colour flip flop to something a bit faster.
Also saw a sand based method for getting a signal up, will try that out.
there are indeed far more compact versions,
I just never saw it done without using sand and gravel which requires replacing sand and gravel blocks at the top
Wanted to do it with something else so that replacing blocks was not needed.
it does allow quick reset, you do have to wait for the water to leave.
i'm just trying to pretty up a cell for screenshots, i didn't think to do anything in a logical order so it's all fairly stone and cobble.
also, my redstone is all over the place and i suspect far bigger than it needs to be,
methinks there is an easier way to do it

Thanks though, I'll just lodge an RA with iinet and get them to take the bob back. =]

Just editing in an update for this.

mc.eternalhavoc.net (sydney based)
server is still running 1.1 though, waiting on a bukkit update. i'll post on here when the server gets updated i guess.
sometime tonight I'll post up schematics for the example cell in the screens (with signs) and 4 cells together so you folks can see you they stack.
If anyone can offer improvements on my hodge podge circuitry let me know =]

cannot happen, the lava and water are separated by a glass wall, if they did somehow both flow at once (also prevented by the latches holding each other closed) you'd just get water backlit through glass with lava

the signal for the cell to become used must be received before the colour signal. i'll look into instant wire, and changing my colour flip flop to something a bit faster.
Also saw a sand based method for getting a signal up, will try that out.

trade out the button for a lever and show us there the issue is =]
alternatively link the server if it's smp, i'm free at the moment and this sounds like the kind of simple problem i might be able to fix

I just never saw it done without using sand and gravel which requires replacing sand and gravel blocks at the top
Wanted to do it with something else so that replacing blocks was not needed.

i'm just trying to pretty up a cell for screenshots, i didn't think to do anything in a logical order so it's all fairly stone and cobble.
also, my redstone is all over the place and i suspect far bigger than it needs to be,
methinks there is an easier way to do it
