posted a message on Minecraft Vet Players.
I consider everyone that plays a Beta tester. you don't get to be pro at beta. half the features that will define the game haven't even been implemented yet. nobody even knows for sure what many of them will be. (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, considering its out of alpha, but I won't apologize for being optimistic.) there are no veterans, we're all along for the ride. don't get me wrong, I'm jealous if you got on before me, but nobody knows whats coming.
you become a veteran when you slay a dragon.

but I have to agree, there is no way that posting stupid questions on a forum could get you half as good an answer, half as fast as clicking the wiki when you Google minecraft for the first time to figure out how to make a damned pickaxe instead. f*n' noobs...

posted a message on Redstone repeaters: Theory and Practical uses
actually, they allow you to put two Redstone paths next to each other without them mixing. thats something. also, if you clicked my link, you'd see that it allows high clocks to be repeated over a distance. I'm also working on a capacitor, even though I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, you couldn't do that before. although it has to be discharged manually... I hope they make these work like transistors or something where they can be blocked when powered from the side... although that could be hard to implement w/o breaking half the good things about them.. could add an inline AND I guess...

posted a message on Redstone gage (spelling?) help
while the actual visual meter would require massive amounts of complicated circuitry (but is more or less doable), you can wire a couple of repeaters set to varying delays off of this, wire them to an AND switch and use it like a capacitor.
I have one now with 7 segments wired to clock, and an AND switch that requires at least 6 to be on to power a device. I'm not really sure what the use is, but if thats what OP wanted, I can help you set it up.
if you just wanted to look at a gauge, I might be able to help, depending on how long and what its for...

thanks. the new update may have actually broken this though... its only working for me now if the toggle gets gets stuck on one side, but not the other... this always happened with the 2x3x2 option, but I'm pretty sure I had it working 100% on the flat one, but now neither your's or mine work more than half the time... this idea may be toast... unless there's a specific orientation that works, but I doubt it...

posted a message on Dealing with Ghasts?
I built tunnels to all my portals. lost many lives. then notch F*d up the spawns for about a day, I had more than 100 ghasts, half of which shot at me even if they couldn't see me, so I switched to peaceful to de-spawn them, and finished my last tunnel. (it was a bridge, I wasn't going to use peaceful, and I was going to die A LOT, so I was kinda glad to have the excuse...)
it should be about 3 arrows to kill it, according to the damage done and health ghats have, but I haven't tried. (well, I did, but I don't remember. also it was while they could still die in lava, so the health wasn't consistent.)
they need a 4x4x4 space to spawn, so you can go as high as you want, as long as you have at least one block in the way of any space this large. or just stick to 2-3 high ceilings.
the fireballs don't do tons of damage, and if you have some stone, you can create an in-destructible area to fight on. but its hard to hit them, so I'd use a fishing rod to pull them in close, or if they're too far away, just hide.
also, I've gotten another glitched ghast in 1.2_1 (not sure on 1.3_1) that shot me no mater where I was (mostly just destroyed the level, but it was only a matter of time...) I recommend setting peaceful, then back to de-spawn it. because the nether really sucks when there's nothing but lava...

    Practical use?

    Lemme sum that up.

    1. Make a 1-clock in a 2x3 space:

    2. Make a rave room:

    Tadah!

Ok. I'm sure there are better uses than rave rooms. But that was the first thing to come to my mind.

Also, you might want to see the videos to learn a bit on the working. I figured out a cheap way of making side by side wires with repeaters, and a way to create 180's and supply power to alternate areas.

    What's this solution?

    Blocks.

Opposed to torches, if a repeater gives power to a block, the entire block become a power source. It fires power in EVERY direction. You can place one of these in the middle of a repeater sequence to pull power out at specific points. That also means you could create vertical chains by hooking it up to a vertical inverter.

    Just sayin'.

well, you beat me.. I thought I was clever when I did this on a 3x5, again when I made it 2x3x2, but this is smaller, and can be RESUMED after returning to the game/server. if you run a redstone wire under the two repeaters, the tick will start again(EDIT: to be clear, you have to change the signal to the wire). there are some other special things you can do with this setup that I go into, for the sake of not typing it all again, here's a link:

mine's fine too. only popped in and back out, but I had a sword (damaged) and a partial stack of cobblestone on me. before latest update. maybe a mac thing? they have a custom Java implementation maintained by apple, so it was only a matter of time before something broke. one of many reasons I will always have a PC. but don't get me wrong, I love the fact that this game can be played on mac/PC/Linux/etc.

try the embedded launcher on the website. get the update, then the external launcher will be up to date as well. thats what I did.

updating in the browser updates the local Java files used by both. you are now up to date, and hopefully won't have to do that again to update next time, but we'll just have to wait and see. so basically, it shouldn't matter...
also, I had to do the same thing, so it's defiantly an issue, but its easy enough to work around...

posted a message on New adjustable Pulse Generator!
I built a 5x3 adjustable/rapid pulser, and it can be wired to resume easily.

all you need to do to start it is place a torch as shown, then remove it.

it can be used at any of the settings, they just need to be matched between the repeaters before starting. (or re-starting)
as for resuming, you can just run a wire under the two repeaters (both, or it locks up) and it (usually) resumes no problem. or, of course, you can just restart with the torch method.

SUPER BONUS: the signal can also be repeated at full speed using repeaters in all directions (I think only one side is full speed if you go north, with the long side going N-S, but I've only tested like once).
FUN FACT: the full speed signal can run repeaters at any setting, allowing it to be the source for several different clocks. also, using it to drive a repeater at the second setting, followed by another at the third yields a steady on signal.

    EDIT:
Thanks to ThoughtWolf for inspiring the new, 2x4x2 design with that last post; should have all the same properties.

and still easily started with a torch placed just in front of either repeater. example:

have to get slightly more creative on the resume trigger, but should still be doable...
resuming only seems to work for this one if the section lit by the lower repeater (left side in picture) is lit when you exit/return. so, not as useful if you want to restart it remotely.

posted a message on Ubuntu Linux display issues while/after full screen
so, I haven't been able to find anybody else with this problem, but when I run MC in the JDK or JRE, everything works perfectly, but once I enter full screen MC seems to take matters into its own hands, and shows on top of everything quite stubbornly. this is really a minor issue, as I can still change desktops, or simply close MC when I'm not actively playing, but becomes a bit of an issue when I leave the game running and the screen locks, as it even shows over the lock screen. I can even actually login I found after quite a bit of trial and error, but I can't see anything, and if the text box loses focus, I'm hosed. this behavior also persists after leaving full screen until I restart the game.
I'm not sure if this is pretty much in the hands of Notch to fix or what, but any ideas are welcome.
FYI: Ubuntu 10.04 3.4 ghz AMD CPU, ATI 5770 graphics, 4 GB RAM, running the download version (haven't figured out how to get java working in browser :Sheep: )
issue similar in WINE, but does not persist after returning to windowed mode. (with or without virtual desktop)
(running the jar in wine, not exe)

posted a message on Some problems running on Ubuntu/Linux
    1. what are you using to run MC? (jre, jdk, etc.)
    2. try a different one. you can use the JDK, JRE, JRE(32), JRE via WINE, etc. I would suggest trying via WINE, assuming you aren't already, because I think it can be a little more cooperative sometimes, as WINE can manage full screen etc. (at least if you set it to use a virtual desktop)
I would start with that and see how far it gets you. I've done it, and, due to a different issue, kinda prefer it myself. it can still be a little finicky, but we are talking about alpha software here...
    good luck.
