posted a message on Making Minecraft scary again
Personally, one of the things I found terrifying about Minecraft when I first started was not having any idea what certain sounds were. So, perhaps try downloading a sound pack of some sort?

I'm not exactly an expert on mods, so I don't know if something like this already exists, but I think it would be great if there was one that added some really subtle creepy elements to the game. Not loads of new monsters or constant jump scares, but really small things- albeit things that could totally mess things up for you- like doors randomly opening, items disappearing from chests, glass breaking, etc.

Contrary to some people in this thread, I would hate for the villagers to start mining. I can just imagine the disasters that could lead to, given how dumb they are; it's bad enough when I screw myself over by stupidly dropping diamonds into lava, I don't want them doing it for me.

I would be okay with them doing things with renewable resources like wheat though, and I like the idea of them doing more than just standing about staring at each other. Villager dance party, yeah!

Seems like no one is checking this thread anymore, but I'll bump again anyway, though I don't have much new to show off.

An overview of the village so far, taken from atop the wall's second watchtower.

I think that my testificates are taking the caves and mines under the village as houses or something, because whenever I come up from mining, there will be a few new children running around, and scenes like this...

I have two Iron Golems now!

This thread seems to be in need of a bump, so I'll offer a little progress.

I'm feeling safe enough to work on larger, prettier buildings now.

Here's the bakery with the (still unfinished, obviously) wall in the background.
    http://i40.tinypic.com/2ivbqso.png
It's bigger than I intended to make it, but that's fine. Eventually, I'm going to add a little yard for them with a cow, some chickens, and some sugar cane.

    This is a little storehouse.
    http://i44.tinypic.com/10z24qv.png
I plan on eventually filling the area with more wheat fields, so that's where I'm gonna dump food.

And, finally, my (also unfinished) inn.
    http://i43.tinypic.com/2nv9j55.png
It looks better from different angles, haha. I'm mainly building it because my villagers have an odd tendency to all try and crowd into the westmost building. The current westmost building is essentially a 1x3 room, so I'm building this so they have somewhere safer to all fit in.

Bumping with a small update. A lot of my achievements since last time aren't things I can really show off, because I've been doing a lot of mining. Found a few diamonds and got myself a stack of Obsidian.

However, a couple of new buildings:
A Blacksmith's shop. Thinking of changing this a bit.

And the beginnings on my outer wall.
    http://i40.tinypic.com/2cejjm0.png
Yeah, it's pretty wide. Last time I built a wall around a village, I made it too thin, haha.

Odd. I also have a problem with villagers crowding in the west.

During the day, they crowd in a tiny area at the edge of the village, where there's pretty much nothing, as seen here:

At night, they all insist on moving into the westmost building, which happens to be a tiny part of a barn. So, they all try and fit into a 1x3 area. The only reason they aren't dead is because I've been so confused by it that I've been hanging about to try and keep zombies away.

    Latest Update:

Well, I've made some serious progress since my last post. I don't have much to report just yet, but I figured I'd post and give this thread a much-needed bump in the meantime. I'll pop back in in an hour or so, hopefully with some pictures to show off my progress. Hope to see some other folks with updates today, as well!

I'm looking forward to seeing how things are going for you!

Personally, I've had what has been the single most irritating experience so far, but also have finally started getting somewhere on the population front.

My villagers, idiots that they are, decided to go wandering off. I followed them, apprehensive, only for them to decide that a cave was the place to go when night started to fall. I, frankly, got very lucky. I managed to wall them in with dirt, then sealed myself in with them to wait out the night. When morning came, I let myself out, then began building a long hallway of dirt to push them back to the village. Because I had limited supplies, this took nearly two days of pushing them forward, blocking the way back, then rushing to destroy parts of the hallway that had already been used so I could make more ahead of us. Luckily, I managed to get them safely back home.

So, I decided to not let them leave their home and yard until I'd built a fence around the whole village. Naturally, that took quite a while, but it was worth it. It doesn't keep enemies out because of the natural landscape, but it is keeping the villagers in.

Here's a few pics of the town at that point:

    http://i40.tinypic.com/e88zsi.png
    http://i43.tinypic.com/2d93gxu.png

Now, onto the positive stuff: my population has absolutely exploded! Because my villagers can now explore the village freely, they've registered all the buildings as 'houses' and begun to breed. I have about 8 villagers now. I'm very happy about this, of course. More villagers means I can relax a bit about protecting them, so I can finally spend my nights doing something productive instead of hovering worriedly in the villager's homes. xP

    I suppose I'll post a little update.
The attempt I that was going well ended. What I said about Endermen removing the ONE BLOCK they shouldn't was oddly prophetic; although I'd blocked off all the entrances to the cave beneath town, one of them opened it up again, and, naturally, one of my villagers immediately decided to hop in.
    http://i40.tinypic.com/jff6hc.png
This is how things were looking just before the end.

So, I started again, and things are going better this time. I built a fence around the villager's house with a gate. I'm not aiming at any particular rank again, so I'm allowing myself to not see it as cheating. I open the gate when I feel it's safe for them to be running around; when it's not, I leave it closed so they're far more limited.

I'm keeping buildings far smaller this time; I want to encourage the villagers to breed as fast as possible. Building a nice manor for myself can wait. I'm also trying to get a good store of food so I have less to worry about later, and a good animal farm with at least two of each. You can't really see in this screenshot, but I have pigs, sheep and chickens. I can't find cows anywhere reasonably close, so, if anyone finds any, let me know where to look. In return, I'll tell you if I find anything interesting.

Edit: Found some cows right after posting.

So, I'm going with my own variation, since I started before the rankings were added but don't want to start again. What I've learnt is that you should make sure you block doors from the inside rather than the outside, because of all the blocks Endermen could play with, they will always go for the one that makes things most difficult, hahaha.

Decided to try this out... and my immediate thought is that the hardest part is getting the villagers to just stay in their house. After several attempts, I've managed to get them in, block the doors, and survive a night, so... well, I'll see how things go from here.

I'm not very fond of combat in Minecraft, but I do like restoring and renovating NPC villages, so I'm up for this challenge. I've only just got started, so no pictures yet, but later I'll post some.

While I was searching for some cows (there are none near my village, and I need leather armor), I came across another village, so here's an idea for a couple of missions:

    Caravan Guard

Your chosen village cannot survive just alone. To gain all the resources they need, the villagers must trade with other villages. However, travel is dangerous and difficult, so a group of villagers who will be making a trip to another village have asked you to guard them on their way.

Simply find another village, and return. Mark the way there with torches so you can return easily later.

You now have access to the second village's resources, and you may keep anything dropped by mobs encountered while travelling.

    Securing Trade Routes

As your village grows in population and visitors, more resources are needed. Sporadic trading trips are no longer good enough. The villagers have asked you to help create a road to the other village, and, realising this could help to bring in more customers for you, you accept.

Build a road to the other village. It does not have to be totally safe, but make it as well lit as possible. If there is a very large distance between your village and the other, build small guardhouses along the way where travellers can shelter for the night.

(I actually can't think of a reward for this one. Anyone have a suggestion?)

Got another thing to add to this 'chain':

    Branching Out

Business is good for both you and your village. One of the other mercenaries has a proposition: a branch of your guild in another village. You agree, but he needs a bit of help setting up.

Travel to the other village, and build a place for the new branch. It does not have to be as impressive as your main compound, but it should have at least a main hall, sleeping quarters, and a small tower.

...Once again, I cannot think of a reward.

As promised, some pictures. Like I said, I really prefer building to fighting, so I got carried away and finished most of my compound without even finishing the first task. I wanted it to be pretty compact, so most of my stuff is actually in the basement... I think I've got enough space down there for everything I need.

The main building, watchtower, and yard earlier.

The yard now, with the forge visible at the back. The little open bit is an unfinished secondary tower that also leads down the the lower floors.

The yard and lower floors as seen from outside.

    Now for inside...

My meeting room. It doesn't look so impressive here, but it's big.

    Captain's quarters

    ...and everyone else's.

The beginnings of my library/alchemy room.

That's all for now. I have rooms set aside, in varying stages of completion, for my portal, dungeons, throne room, a secret tunnel to outside the village walls, and a little extra space for whatever else I need. I also have 3 different storage rooms, and there's a little bit of space between the compound and the village's outer wall if I need another building.

(Oh, and I've finished the first two stages, so on to the third for me!)

I agree with Elijah87 that you should add all the suggestions unless they're unreasonable. Most of them should be optional though, especially since a few will inevitably not work together; I really like weatherdog's suggestions, for example, but if someone tried to do them and mine it would be much more difficult, since you'd have to either destroy your trade village, or search out another.
