The free trial is real. I just checked on 1.8.9 (I did get a month a while back to check it out) and it did show up. If you just get an empty list and you are certain you had gotten Realms in the past try clicking anywhere in the list area and it may popup for you.

I'm an idiot... Just saying.

I went and tried it but for a server. When you load it fails badly and definitely looks like it is looking for a client.

You can still play "real" Minecraft on Windows 10. The original version that uses Java can still be run on Windows 10 just fine and is still being actively developed. You can download it on Minecraft.net.

Yay! It works! \o/
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

That's fine. I only bring it up to let the others know and to let the dev know. I know it is ultimately up to the dev if/when it gets patched to support newer forge releases. That being said I have been compiling my own Forge builds so that I can use it on servers still sitting on old bungeecord builds (the ones released in the gap where Forge was already sending a FML identifier but bungeecord error'd out with a mis-leading message not knowing how to handle it). I can't build anything older than 1523 for reasons unknown to me beyond the fact that the build system crashes part way through (can't even run gradlew setup). Newer builds are fine though so it seems something got fixed along the way.
Great news. I'll be waiting for it.

Looks like Optifine 1.8 breaks on Forge builds starting with 1523. Any fixes available for this issue?
Edit: Last working build is 1521 as far as compatibility with Optifine is concerned.

There isn't any Forge builds for any Minecraft releases past the original 1.8.

I can confirm this as well. Starts with 1.8 build 1474 and for those on 1.7.10 it starts with 1469
The issue appears to be one of these commits. Likely the last one however the java argument doesn't allow Optifine to load (possibly because it is a tweak).

Ok... So I use Xaero's Minimap. Now before you go and yell at me and say that I shouldn't be posting this here read the rest of this message too...
His last update broke bad on Optifine D3. He came up with a workaround though which worked around the render issue on his mod.
Go to Video Settings -> Performance. There turn off fast render.
For this mod you will need to disable shaders (make it not load) while you do this since the menus gets messed up on D3 with shaders mod installed. However once you toggle that off you can restart minecraft and re-enable shaders (let it load). At this point shaders will work and you will be running Optifine D3. I've tested and verified this.
Please be aware: This is only a workaround!
I'm hoping that this may allow the maintainer of this mod to find a proper fix for his mod though.
It is possibly related to this Optifine changelog entry for D3 (D2 works fine without workarounds)
So... I wonder what they did there... Anyways I didn't do a thorough check around however I saw the menus looked 100% better so a general assumption is that it may take care of any other issues as well.

Guys, I have a temporary solution for you. Go to Video Settings -> Performance -> Fast Render -> Turn it off and restart the client.
I'm working on a permament fix right now. Not sure if it's even possible because Optifine disables FBO's thinking it's cool.
Thanks. I can confirm that the workaround works. I look forward to a proper fix later on but this will work for now.
EDIT: By sheer luck you found a workaround for another mod that has a huge note on their forum post that says it incompatible with D3 as well (one part is that custom fonts get wonky). I'm going to mention this over there too... Maybe that will help them fix it.

GPU mode is broken when trying to use it with Optifine 1.8.0 HD_U_D3. Both D1 and D2 work fine though. Safemode works with D3 but obviously that negates the performance improvements by using the GPU instead.
This is what I get on Optifine D3 when I test. Using the current 1.5 release.

I have reported this issue in the past. The issue is in the HD Font handling. If you use MCPatcher you will notice the issue doesn't present itself over there on the same server using the same texture pack. A workaround is to turn of HD Fonts but then the fonts look ugly.

Here is the dump from Forge #1295 for 1.8. Full crashdump file is at my pastebin.

I looked and didn't see anything that would allow me to do it. I'm glad you could make sense of what is going on.

Just as a point of reference I tried the following.
1) Narrowed my installed mod list to Forge (required by iChunUtil), LiteLoader (required by mod_macros), iChunUtil, and mod_macros. I was still able to repro the crash.
2) Changed to using the Mojang supplied launcher instead of MultiMC (which is in the stack trace at OpenEye) and the issue is still reproducable.
This is reproducable in the options screen in the main menu as well as options in game.
