posted a message on So you want to learn "How to Program"?
I just started learning Python because it seems pretty simple, and one of my favorite games ever is written in it: EVE Online.

I have learned that everything I thought I knew was wrong. It's so much easier to get graphics and controls running than the skill and experience engine. At least for me. I think part of it is that I've been trying everything available to me.

I've worked with everything from PyOpenGL itself to 4 different wrappers for that. I've gone with just trying OpenGL, but that's crazy hard right now. I'm going to try PyOgre next. That's most of the fun right now, though. Just getting out there and finding all different ways to do things, and figuring out which works the best for me. Just running my head against a wall and finding the ways around it is just awesome.

I haven't had this much fun in ten years, at least.

On Monday(that being Monday, January 10th, 2011) the Mojang team will discuss what the specific goals are that they have to meet for notch to consider the game complete. They will then guess how long it will take to reach each goal in succession. They will then add those times together, and after using high-level mathematical formulas(counting and addition), they will have a tentative release date.

Furthermore, the game will not change drastically when it does release as a full retail version. The game may not be much different than it was a week prior to the arbitrary "release date" we will have defined from the meeting described previously. The reason is that we update the game with content and bugfixes at rapid pace such that it will only be a change of paradigm from the creation of the game to the maintenance and expansion of the game.

Of course, I might be wrong about that. But I'm not.

posted a message on Minecraft running slow? Scaevolus found a fix!
Notch already said he's changing the save to a single file as soon as possible. Maybe within the month. He is even working on a script that will convert the old saves to the new format when you load them. Notch's twitter is your friend when it comes to learning what''s coming in the near future.

God, I don't know how many times I restarted because I missed a picture. I loved the golf game, though. Or was that the first one? Now, I have to check...

posted a message on Beta soon, new content?
If you click on the development blog link at the top of the page, you can see what he's planning. Specifically, if you go back a couple weeks, he posted a picture of his development planner(just a board with sticky notes attached to it at this point) and posted about his method of pushing each feature through with the rest of the guys in the office.

But, to answer your question, he has been saying that he will constantly be adding to Minecraft until people don't want to play it anymore. Look at the "Things Notch Has Said" sticky for more information.

But wouldn't they just cancel each other out, defeating the purpose of having any boosters at all? Or do Minecraftian physics not work that way?

Assume you have a six-track booster on both ends. When you leave, you are in contact with the booster cart for six track lengths, and your momentum is increased along all six tracks. When you reach the booster on the far side, you are only in contact the cart for one track length. Unless you've spent all of your boosted momentum, that one length of track won't be noticed at all.

posted a message on Do you ever use INVedit?
I use invedit to give myself a diamond pickaxe and shovel when I'm working on massive projects, but I never hack blocks. Every single block I mine or dig myself.

For small projects like cottages and low walls for outposts, I go back my trusty stone tools.
