I'm assuming you have Comcast, as those prices and speeds sound roughly like what I've heard Comcast offers. The issue is, Comcast uses shady marketing, where they advertise speeds with "powerboost". This means that you can get up to those speeds, but typical speeds for anything more than a few megabytes in size will be far, far lower. Business plans also employ powerboost, but I am not sure if they correctly advertise base speeds for those.

It's your money, so if you want to throw it away, we can't stop you. It's still a bad choice on your part.

Yea, now that I read carefully, I see that your right. But I also just read that PowerBoost doesn't kick in above the 22 mbps plans.
I'm assuming that my money comment is about me not renting a server. I have rented servers, but I don't prefer them, so I think this is the better choice for me. And I was planning to get a machine like this in a few years for other purposes, and decided to get it now instead and use it as a MC server in the meantime until I feel like repurposing it (unless my server get a large player base. Then I wouldn't shut down the server).
EDIT: I just looked it up, it seems like with business class, powerboost is boosting ABOVE their rate, not UP TO it. All the tests I saw are getting 50-80/10-30 with advertised 12/2 or 22/5 plans. And then the people I saw who were running net meter or stuff like that were saying once powerboost ran out, their speeds went down to just under their plans rate. So I don't think my speeds will dip to low.

FTP is pretty easy with a good FTP client (filezilla is my preference). I would still use FTP if I was running a home box as an easy way to transfer files to the server without having a monitor and keyboard set up.

Yup, it seems like that's what I'm gonna do. But I think I have a crappy monitor and stuff laying around somewhere, so I may hook that up instead (Or use both).

Just upgrade your internet speed a little more, and you should be fine. :)

    That's the plan XD
    Quote from jimmybrite

Debian or Ubuntu server, the learning curve on CentOS is kinda steep. I use CentOS as a server OS, but I've been fiddling with linux for years.

No need for a 2500k like someone suggested even though that's what I have as a main pc, 8gb is fine.
ssd's will be much faster but get a good one, and get another regular drive as a backup.
Even regular drives in Raid 0 would be sufficient.

If you upgrade the internet connection, inquire about business plans, it's more expensive but there's a better uptime, no throttling, etc...

Yea I'm looking at the pricing's right now. Right now I'm supposed to get a 20 down/4 upload speed and I pay about $50 (Not certain, It's part of a bundle and I don't feel like looking it up XD). I can either pay $100 for a personal plan, 50 down/10 up, a data cap, and not legally host servers, or I can pay $100 for a business plan, 22 down/5 up, no data cap, and servers are legal. Which one should I go with? :P (Rhetorical question. The answer is obviously the Business Plan XD)
    Quote from battlekid

Okay, those speeds are decent, but are they sustained? Run ShaperProbe for me and post the results, as those look like cable speeds (which are often artificially boosted for short downloads/uploads, so speedtests are inaccurate).

Another thing to consider is that your ISP most likely doesn't allow server traffic. While a small server normally has no issues, anything larger has a pretty good risk of you being caught.

Last but not least, in almost every case I've seen, it's cheaper both short-term and usually long-term to rent a server, instead of hosting at home.

Huh? No you don't, all you need is a sustained 1.5mbps of upload for every ~10 players.

I tried running ShaperProbe, but right now it says all the servers are busy, so I'll try running it later and tell you.
They do just what you said. I'll probably upgrade to a business plan where they do allow servers, and there's no data cap.
I don't care if its cheaper XD

Speeds really aren't that great for Minecraft, the upload would be alright for a few people, but your players might start to notice it.

Also, do you have the bandwidth available to do this? Minecraft will eat it, and you don't want to be going over your limit every month. I would also like to add, does your ISP even allow you to run server(s) on your connection? Do they block any ports (eg. 80,443,25565)?

And you are going to have to use FTP/SFTP/SCP no matter what you do - how are you going to transfer files from and to the machine otherwise?

Yea I'm planning on upgrading my connection soon.
I have enough bandwidth, and my ISP doesn't PREFER servers but they overlook them as long as they don't get TOO crazy. And unless they've blocked the ports in the last week, their open.
And I guess your right, but I like the freedom this gives me. I can control almost every detail with this, unlike some of the dedicated servers I've trial run.
    Quote from ImmaBoss123

How many people are you looking to host for?

Yeah, right, but i'm talking a server with hundreds of slots. His current speed might be good for about 40 people max.

I'm hoping to have a server with 60ish members, but at any one time there will probably only be 20-25, maybe a max of 40 if I'm hosting a special event.

The RAM is might be overkill, depends on how many players you plan on being on the server at one time and also your internet speed.

Using Bukkit, and it's not just an MC server.

I wouldn't ever consider mint to be a lightweight distro, it's not designed to be one. If I was running a webserver I would be running either Debian or Centos (both have apache2/nginx, MySQL and php5 packages) with either a lightweight gui such as LXDE or none at all.

In that case I'll use CentOS

First of all, if your going to be hosting a minecraft server, your upload and download speed is going to be atleast 100/MB per second.
Second of all, MineOS is terrible software - Use Linux server, very simple and powerful, you will rarely have to reset your computer.
Third of all, will you be running bukkit for your mc server? If so, 16 GB ram will be suitable and that way you will be able to have 80+ plugins, while having a large player slot amout.

Probably use intel core i5 2500k. Lots of processing memory. Not sure what mobo you should use, but defiantly look at some Asus mobo's as they are very powerful.

Could you also add in the description what your download and upload speed is? http://www.speedtest.net/
Giving me this information can help me help you :)

Yes I'm using Bukkit. And I guess I'll use CentOS unless you have another one to suggest.
I have an 15-2500k in my current comp, so I may but a new CPU for this one and switch them out, but I'm reluctant 'cause I don't need to spend the extra money on 4 cores, since MC can only utilize 1 core.

I would have to say CentOS 6.3 "as of current". I know more of CentOS then others for server workings.

    Yup, planning on CentOS

First of all, you need to check on your internet speed. It should be at least 100 mb/s to run with a decent amount of players.

It doesn't need to be a 100mbit line. 10mbits/s both ways would host a decent number of players (poss. 30ish).

It may be better renting one in the long run because if you do get bored - or the players do, then you can just cancel the monthly fee for the VPS/Dedicated server.

Don't wanna rent 'cause I hate having to go through FTP or whatever it's called (I can never remember the name XD) and I was planning on getting a comp like this in a few years for other reasons, but I decided to get now and use it for MC in the meantime.

Before you purchase anything, please go to speedtest.net and tell us the results. This will determine whether you can run 3 servers or not. Also, how many people do you expect to be on each server (Minecraft, SQL, and website) at once? This will also help. It is true SSD's DO become read-only, but only after an extended length of time and by the time they do you will probably have purchased more storage/upgraded your system in the first place. Both of the drives series you have selected are excellent, but getting an SSD for hosting servers will most likely not benefit performance at all, but it won't decrease it either. Simply get a single 500GB drive (or less) from the Samsung F3 series, Seagate Barracuda, or WD Blue. As with your processor, I recommend sticking with the i3, Intel really is beating AMD in everything at all price points at the moment, so stick with the Intel. The extra two cores will not make a difference, especially in what you are asking.

EDIT: Oh, and 16GB of RAM isn't needed. 8GB should suit you.

EDIT 2: Use a Linux distro (such as Mint or other lightweight distros) instead of MineOS, that one appears to be designed specifically for Minecraft servers and you are hosting a SQL and web server as well.

OK, and I'm working on an update to my post as well, will be finished and up tomorrow?
I was thinking the extra two cores would help with the mumble/vent, SQL, web server, etc. but then I'm not really used to how much resources those use.
From what I remember MineOS also supports SQL and that stuff, but I may be wrong.
Well I GTG for the day as of 20 mins ago. I will update my main post tomorrow.
    EDIT: nvm, its updated!

Hi guys, this is my 2nd time posting this (Last time for some reason my post would cut off after the first paragraph. Couldn't get it to show more), but I've recently decided to switch my Minecraft server over to a dedicated machine, and I need help deciding on parts for it. I will probably have
an MC server, a SQL server, mabye a Mumble/Vent/etc. server, and it's possible (but unlikely) that I'll put a small web server on the DM.

    ----------------------------------------Currently Selected Items---------------------------------------

    Case: Antec Mini-ITX Case ISK110-VESA. $072.99
    http://bry.vc/ICqd16
    Motherboard: Intel DH67CF Mini-ITX Board $110.99
    http://bry.vc/ICoDwe
CPU: Intel i3-2120 Dual Core 3.4GHz Sandy Bridge $114.98
    http://us.ncix.com/p...nufacture=Intel
Low-Profile CPU Cooler: SilverStone NT07-1156 CPU Cooler. $024.50
    http://bry.vc/IpyC6V
    RAM: Corsair 16GB XMS3 (2x 8GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz 240-Pin. $084.99
    http://bry.vc/KqSl7z
OS: CentOS or MineOS CRUX (Tell me if you have anything better!)

NOTE: I am also thinking of changing out the i3-2120 for a AMD FX-4170 4.2 GHz Quad
Core and modifying my selections as necessary to support it. http://tinyurl.com/93p8ns9

    -----------------------------------------Preliminary Questions-----------------------------------------

    1) Does every SSD write = 1 step closer to Read-Only?
I've read reports saying that with every write to the SSD, the SSD gets 1 step closer to becoming Read-Only. Is this true?

    2) Where should I/You/We look for the best prices? Personally I use http://www.newegg.com/, and somebody suggested http://www.pcpartpicker.com/, but if you have anything else, tell us!

    ----------------------------------------------Drive Setup----------------------------------------------

I'm planning on this drive setup, should I use it?:
I will have a higher speed HDD containing all the servers (Drive #1), a smaller, cheap HDD holding the OS, and a few programs (Drive #2), and I would have a large 2 (4?)TB HDD containing hourly backups of the Minecraft (and SQL?(And Web?)) server(s), and weekly backups of the entire setup (Drive #3). And if I really want to take precautions, even though it's pretty much unneccesary, I could buy a 2nd large capacity HDD in a few months and set it up in a RAID 0 or similar with Drive 3 (It doesn't hurt to be to careful!)

    -------------------------------------------Case/Motherboard--------------------------------------------

    *TO BE ADDED*

    --------------------------------------------------CPU--------------------------------------------------

I chose the Intel i3-2120 Dual Core because it's one of the faster dual cores I found. I don't really want to go with something like a quad core but I don't really think I'll need that much power. I got a suggestion for the i5-2500k, It's the CPU I have in my comp right now, so if I do decide to use it, I'll buy a better CPU for my current one and just switch them out.

    --------------------------------------------------SSD--------------------------------------------------

If I end up using an SSD, it seems like I'll be going with a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 series drive. From what I've read, fast read/write times, reliability, and the random 4k speeds are the most inportant but please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know much about these . Could you recomend a SSD in the previously mentioned series that are fast, very reliable/long lived, approx. 128GB, and between $0-$150 (but I won't mind if it goes up to $200).

    --------------------------------------------------HDD--------------------------------------------------

    *TO BE ADDED*
    ----------------------------------------------Speed Test---------------------------------------------

    Download: 23.65 Upload: 4.35
This isn't going to be my final speeds, though. I am planning on upgrading to better speeds soon (probably after I get the server up).

    -----------------------------------!!!Tell Us What You Know!!!-----------------------------------

If I should setup the disks differently, or if the drive sizes should be different, or really just anything, PLEASE TELL ME! As I said, this is my first time building a dedicated machine for MC and I don't know what the best hardware to use is. And I REALLY don't know a lot about SSD's either, this is the first time I've delved into them. But then helping me (and/or learning new things) is what your here for! At least I hope it is.... XD

    Ok back on track.
    1) Does every SSD write = 1 step closer to Read-Only?

    2) Disk Arrangement:
    Option A1: SSD 1 = Servers HDD 1 = OS, Programs, Backups of Server(s) HDD 2 = Drive 2 Backups
    Option A2: SSD 1 = Servers HDD 1 = OS, Programs HDD 2 = Drive 1/2 Backups
    Option B1: HDD 1 = Servers SSD 1 = OS, Programs, Backups of Server(s) HDD 2 = Drive 2 Backups
    Option B2: HDD 1 = Servers SSD 1 = OS, Programs HDD 2 = Drive 1/2 Backups
    Option C1: HDD 1 = Servers HDD 2 = OS, Programs, Backups of Server(s) HDD 3 = Drive 2 Backups
    Option C2: HDD 1 = Servers HDD 2 = OS, Programs HDD 3 = Drive 1/2 Backups

If Q1 is true, Options A1 & A2 will be eliminated.
If Q1 = true, will Option B1 still be viable? Or is backing up to that SSD a bad idea?
NOTE: I was thinking Options B1 & B2 would speed OS boot and programs and such, but how many times will that matter? I think almost never so I'd say Options B1 & B2 are eliminated unless you guys know of a good reason to do that.

35 reviews out of 567 says very little about the drive. As I said, faulty units can exist, however are very rare. Besides, a 6% 1-star rating doesn't actually mean you have a 6% chance of getting a faulty unit, because not everyone bothers to write a review of their SSD on newegg. Those who get a faulty unit however, may be more inclined.

I guess your right... I wasn't reallyaying attention to the total reviews and how insignificant those 1 egg ones were..... Xd

Where are you reading these reviews? I can't seem to find much reviews on newegg suggesting that.

The drives suggested are definitely reliable, they would not fail within half a year. Like with any product, someone may get a faulty unit once in a while, but that doesn't mean all of the drives aren't reliable.

I think I went to desktop graphics and selected 100-200 and manufacturer: crucial
The 2nd? One has like 35 reviews saying 'died in (6 weeks, 8 weeks, 6 months, DOA, blue screened after 1 week, fried my mobo, etc.)' same kind of comments for some other models that I saw, too. And I'm pretty sure there's similar reviews for the 830

    Ok so should I do:
1: Mc server backs up to HDD 1, which also contains OS/other, which then backs up to HDD 2.

    Or

2: everything on SSD, which backs up to HDD 1. HDD 2 doesn't exist.

    Or

    3: other configuration
