I've been building houses in Minecraft for over a year now (usually for adventure maps) and I've learned a great deal doing so. Here are a few rules I always use when starting a new project.
My biggest tip would be to use reference images: I'm not a trained architect, so houses that I try to do on my own are often lackluster. I'm not saying that you should build exact replicas of things, but try to use various elements that you've seen used in real life successfully.
Don't use large areas of the same material: solid, flat walls or floors of plain wood planks will always look bad. Always try to add some sort of visual break to a large plane, for example area rugs, wall trim, windows, pillars, moulding, ect.
Pay attention to detail: small things really do make the difference here. It's amazing how much better something can look if you do something as simple as add shutters or place flowerpots around.
Practice: you're not going to make something super amazing on your first try. For reference, this is my first Minecraft house:
and here's one I'm currently building for a haunted house map:
I think your criteria is too limiting. I would be interested in such a thing, but, if this is a group for architects and I only build houses, why to I need to do redstone and sculptures too?
To be honest guys I see no other purpose for this video but entertainment.
Then you got the whole point.
You seem to have missed the point, instead of showing how to improve adventure maps / their threads, you've just made a video dedicated to going through the forums and taking the p*ss out of how bad the threads are.
There's a spawn bug that happened to me so I spawned in a ton of redstone (after I died). Then I died again, and I went to the ending, which totally ruined the ending to me. But I want to replay the map again so I can actually play the middle. Can somebody help me?
P.S. The redstone mechanics are really good. I have to say, this is 500x better than something I can build.
You're probably playing it in the current version of minecraft. You'll need to downgrade to fix the spawn bug. The original post has been edited with more information on the topic.
Why not update the map so it works with the command block?
That's exactly what we're going to do, but it would make more sense to do so after it has been officially released in 1.4 so that people don't have to fumble around with shapshots.
Heres an idea. Make a "fix spawn" mod. Then we can play the map
Here's an idea. Don't be such a knob jockey. Then you won't look like a smug ****.
Anyway, to generate some interest, heres a screenshot of some stuff we've been working on for the next map.
This is obviously a very early developement shot and will almost certainly change, but now that school has started and we're getting back in the swing of procrastinating, this map is coming together pretty quickly.
I was increasingly disappointed by the last hour, and the end actually made me angry.
I can see the last quarter of it draggnig on a bit long but I'm surprised you didn't like the ending. The best explanation I can think of is that you didn't actually make it all the way and ended up in the cake room and just assumed that was it? Because that's happened to some people and it would certainly make me angry if that's all there was.
This we'll wait and see the playthrough. I don't know in what way it made you angry. I could ask you to just elaborate, but I'd rather be patient and see the natural reaction.

Ah, Gloria. Every time I hear somebody mention your map, this gets stuck in my head for at least an hour:

Then you got the whole point.
It's a "Let's Play" video, not a tutorial.

Well that sounds like fun. I'd give it a try.

Ew, no! Waiting is so boring!

What specifically is wrong with it? Everything is working fine on this end.

I don't know, considering how awesome the sequel is so far he may need to reevaluate his grading scale.
