Does anyone else stop walking randomly? It's like I run into something but there's nothing there. If I look around and re-click "w" I start walking again. I got a new keyboard and I can't tell if it's something with my keyboard or 1.13-pre1. It might also be a lag issue but it seems different somehow, it's hard to describe. Anyone else?
I cheat if I do something dumb, like enchant the wrong item or something or lose the water from my bucket while clearing lava lakes. I also cheat to get around the work penalty on the anvil because that annoys the crap out of me. It still wipes all the experience I have when I jump back into survival mode so that seems fair to me. But, when I repair an enchanted item I repair it using a full new version. Like, if I'm repairing a diamond ax I combine it with a brand new diamond ax, not just one diamond. I don't totally look at it as cheating, I'm just using a different set of rules.
How do you choose your world seed? Do you search the "Seeds" forum for a seed with a perfect combination of spawn/biomes/structures/villages? Or, do you just go for random generation?
And, once you do get your seed, do you check it out with Amidst (or whatever other option you use) or do you just allow yourself to explore and hope you don't bypass a Jungle Temple by 2 chunks?
Final question: during game play do you use the debug screen to verify your coordinates or do you consider that cheating? Do you just check your location or do you use it to navigate?
My last few worlds I've used seeds with "all biomes" within 2,000 - 3,000 blocks. Biome diversity is my only pre-req because I've been bored by endless desserts generated by random seeds. I only use Amidst to check the seed in advance to make sure there are enough villages/temples/whatever to keep things interesting.
I use the coordinates on the debug screen to check my y-level when I'm branch mining... or if I'm out exploring without a map and I get hopefully lost, but I try not to because that feels like cheating.
You playing on 1.7.4, it's that chicken jockey problem that was only recently fixed. My mine has 12 chickens in it, a chicken jockey spawns. However the zombie despawns but the chicken doesn't, leaving a bunch of chickens in your cave systems.
Is that what's happening!? I have chickens EVERYWHERE! I just started a new world in 1.7.4 and there are chickens in every cave. I assumed that with the new update they have the ability to spawn underground now or something. But seriously... I've entered 5 or 6 cave systems and they all have at least two chickens running around. They leave a ton of eggs too. My caves are littered with chickens and eggs. Are you sure they're from chicken jockeys? It just seems like a lot of chicken jockeys.

Question, in your second post do the rest of the seeds have woodland mansions? Also, how are you finding woodland mansions if not with Amidst?

Maybe you just need to start with a different seed that sparks your interest.

Apparently you'll spawn near villages which will give it more of an RPG feel.
