It seems that Notch has been on both sides of the issue; on one hand, he says he may implement Herobrine in the future. On the other hand, he has stated the myth of Herobrine is completely false, and he is not in the game.

The only way to logically look at this is to look at the supplied evidence. Notch's statements cancel each other out, so we can't use either as evidence. So where do we look for proof either way? How about in the code of MineCraft itself?

I can tell you that many people, including professional software programmers, have looked at the code, and nowhere is there any mention of a Herobrine entity or character. Unless you're stupid, this can only lead to one logical conclusion: Herobrine does not exist at this point in time. Of course, there's the *possibility* that he may be implemented in the future, but for right now, there is no Herobrine, so threads about him serve no purpose.

Hopefully you understand the logic behind this. Please stop posting threads about Herobrine.

Here is a valid argument with this statement :biggrin.gif:

    http://www.herobrine.co/showthread.php?tid=37

That doesn't make sense either. Again, people have looked at the code, and there is nothing that details any temporary downloading of entities. Also, under your argument, Herobrine could not possibly exist in SSP, since it can be played offline. And finally, regarding that argument about runescape, it turns out they do store files on your local machine. The files can be found at C:\.jagex_cache_32\.

posted a message on How do i make a mod?
First of all, HTML is not a coding language; it's a scripting language.

Secondly, if you'd like to start learning programming, making a mod for MineCraft (or any game) is definitely not the way to start. It's way too much to take in at once. Instead, just look up a few easy tutorials. Java is a pretty good starting language.

Don't be discouraged if you don't get it right away. Very few people do. Just take your time, learn at your own pace.

I had been switching between Doku's RPG pack, Faithful, Painterly, Bumpmaft, and a couple of others, but I now stick with the John Smith pack, which is an AMAZING 32x32 pack. I will probably stick with it for a long time.

posted a message on New Redstone Controlled Torch
First off: I commend Satharis and wyrmhole for debating their (admittedly off-topic) issue maturely and intelligently. I haven't seen a good debate like this for a long time, especially with the general level of idiocy around these parts.

Second: I wanted to give my two cents on the (off) topic. I think What Satharis said in one of his earlier posts is correct: The point of a game is to simulate an alternate reality. However, what Satharis has somewhat failed to realize is that these alternate realities have rules and laws of their own. In our world, animals don't "spawn" in the dark. They are born, don't despawn, and walk wherever they darn well please until they die. In the MineCraft world, animals obviously cannot be "born" unless they are within a certain light level: bright for pigs, sheep, cows, and chickens, and dark for zombies, creepers, skeletons, and spiders. While we in our world may not understand why these laws exist, we must still abide by them while we visit the MineCraft world. Thus, using resources that the world supplies you to create a mob trap is a completely legitimate way to survive and thrive.

Obviously, there needs to be some discretion in what is truly legitimate - IMO, if a material is used for something outside of it's intended use, then that's probably abuse and not clever resource manipulation.

And finally, on to the topic of the thread: I think a lantern or torch of some kind with switchable power would be a great addition to the game. It would help with the above-mentioned mob traps, since it would allow you to perhaps switch on only part of a mob trap at one time. Also, on multiplayer, if you're trying to hide your base, it's harder if all the lights are permanently on; if you could turn off the lights before you left, that would help hide it.

You know, I've recently been doing something sort of similar. I got the SinglePlayerCommands mod and used setspeed and setjump to increase my agility (so I have the speed and power of a superhero). Then I went to the Nether, gave myself a diamond sword, and then jump-attacked every Ghast I saw. It's so satisfying to soar up at a Ghast and slice it right out of the sky...

posted a message on How to protect chests well...?
I would warn against hiding chests in bedrock unless the bedrock area is hard to get to. If there's an obvious base at bedrock level, to me, it's more or less a given that there will be treasure hidden somewhere in the bedrock. If you want to hide a chest there, you should make your base a few blocks above bedrock, then make a hidden path to the bedrock.

Also, to what CaptainCaption said, marking your treasure/base with some sort of sign is not a bad idea, but you have to make sure it's really out of the way and subtle. If it looks like the sign was purposely placed, experienced griefers are going to know where to look. As an example, I have a treasure room about a chunk away from my base. I picked a really random spot for it, so I needed a marker for it. I used a sand X sticking out of beachwater, but then I added a few sand blocks branching off the X so it didn't actually look like an X.

posted a message on When is it OK to grief?
I don't think griefing is okay at all if you're on a creative/non-PvP server.

If you are on a PvP server (like I am) then I think it's not bad. On the server I play on, admins allow and even encourage griefing - it forces the players to think about the placement of their bases, where they hide their treasures, etc. Also, it's no fun stealing other people's stuff if they don't know who to yell at and target for their next attack, so most people have some sort of sign they leave behind. My sign is TNT topped with a pressure plate right in their treasure room. Other people fill bases with lava or water, destroy furniture, etc.

I also play-grief on public structures. Instead of outright destroying them, I modify them to be silly. For example, I'll replace some random blocks with other blocks, just to make the building look messed up (easily fixed). Or, my new favorite, I grow trees on top of trees on top of trees right next to the community storage. One of my rival's favorite "grief" methods is to add an arboretum to everyone's base. He's already done mine... :Sheep:

So in conclusion, griefing is alright if it's in good humor and if it's easily fixed. Or if the server allows more violent griefing (like my first example of blowing up treasure rooms). Other than that, it should be a last resort action.

(NOTE: In my server, we all know each other in real life, and we're all pretty good friends. If any of us crosses the line, we all know the admins, who can easily fix our stuff. So we don't really have too much of a problem.)

posted a message on Why hasn't anybody noticed?
I wouldn't say MineCraft isn't a strategy game. In singleplayer, you're trying to build a base that is strong enough against creeper and zombie attacks, and at the same time it should look good. Once you've accomplished that, you plan out your next big project. In SMP, you're doing kind of the same thing if you're on a creative server. If you're on a PvP server, I can't think of any way how it wouldn't be considered a strategy game - you have to hide your base, your treasure, come up with a way to beat everyone else, etc.

Anyway, how come Notch isn't up as the game's creator? It only lists the game's artist. Surely the Smithsonian is not just looking the actual artwork of the game? The plot, the ingenuity, the gameplay style, all of that should be important. The main creator should be the one with his name up there, no? It just struck me as a bit odd, is all.

posted a message on How to protect chests well...?
First of all, to all the people who say this server sucks: It's obviously a PvP server, or at least a server that doesn't forbid PvP actions. Telling the OP to pick a different server is not an option. He may like the server, the way it's run, the people who play on it, etc. So let's just help him with his issue.

I consider myself to be pretty good at hiding chests on my PvP server. Here are my hints:

For starters, don't keep all your items at one base. Make a couple bases, spread out over a couple chunks, and use the following hiding strategies in all of them.

Here are some actual chest hiding ideas:
    1. The decoy idea is not bad, but it's overused. Whenever I find someone's base, as soon as I find a chest, I destroy everything in a large area around the chest, just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

    2. I use underwater hidey-holes for my chests, in addition to decoys. See example:
    :cobblestone: :Blue: :Blue: :Blue: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: [] :Blue: [] :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :Blue: :Blue: :Blue: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :GoldBar: :Blue: :Blue: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: [] :Blue: [] :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :Blue: :Blue: :Blue: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :Diamond: :Blue: :Blue: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:

With :GoldBar: being semi rare items (gold, iron, maybe a couple of diamonds) and :Diamond: being most of the rare items (diamonds, diamond blocks, diamond tools, etc). The top layer is supposed to be a man-made fountain - it should look man made, so that people think it's just for decoration. Then, if they manage to find the first hidden chest, they are likely to think that's it, so they'll just leave. You could also add another layer to the bottom that acts as a trap, in case anyone finds the real chest, gets greedy, and keeps digging. Maybe use cacti or dispenser traps?

    3. Put your chests in places no one thinks to look. Most griefers/other players will be looking underground for your treasures, especially if that's where they find your base. Instead of putting your stuff there, find a tall tree, climb to the top, punch out one or two blocks of leaves, and hide a chest in a tree. This tricks is surprisingly effective, especially if you use a big tree.

    4. Your base entrance should be well protected. I'm currently making a base where the entrance lobby has about 10 different doors you can choose to walk through. All of them will lead to lethal traps except one, which leads to your base. Chances are, people will die before getting to your actual base, and they may just get fed up with trying to get deeper into your fortress.

I have a couple other tricks up my sleeve, but I don't want to give away all my secrets. :iapprove:

    Hope that helps!

posted a message on Ghast spawning near the portal, true or truth?
I vaguely remember that they require a 5x5x5 space to spawn.

More importantly, how do you kill them once they're in the world? As a joke, I spawned one (using a mod) in the overworld because I wanted to see how much damage they would do to the landscape. However, it started shooting at me immediately, and then floated up to the "ceiling". After a while, it disappeared above cloud level... but the fireballs kept firing! I enabled a fly mod so I could meet up with him in a midair showdown, but because he was so high up, he was invisible - arrows and swords did nothing! I can't kill it and now my world is impossible to build in.

(I could turn it to peaceful, I guess, but that's boring.)
