But I certainly agree that turning topics to positive discussions is something we should do, I have done it myself with some threads that have a lot of spam in them, I just ask a question or I put a statement of something concerning the mod and people will respond to that. But that might become artificial if we are going to do it large-scale.

I honestly don't think artificial will be an issue with as many of us that there are. To most people it will just look like we are active and upbeat people.

I agree that it truly depends on the user who is posting. Having us see "oh it's one of those" and post something as simple as something like...

Good attempt at making a texture pack it's always nice to see new faces. Might I suggest you check out these tutorials here as it may help you improve.

With something like that it would help the member to get resources to help them. It would also allow members to see the first post was by a mod so it may deter some of the unhelpful negative and rude comments that we end up needing to moderate because then people get the feeling of we're watching the topic. Based on the system I suggest it would still get moved to the regular area if it met the rules but then we would be able to have possibly filtered out the other stuff. As members post even if it is bad they shouldn't have to be attacked and have to handle anything or be thick skinned. Just because it's feedback doesn't negate the rules "Every member deserves to be treated with respect. Positive and polite posts create a friendly and welcoming environment that all Minecraft players will feel comfortable in."

    -Work in Progress-
Thank you to the community you have been a huge help in doing this!

(image will be updated periodically to reflect progress Blocks that are default I have not done I hate seeing through the world)

As of right now due to having open every graphics program I do when I take screenshots I have been taking them in 128px but when the pack is released it will be in all available HD sizes and even hopefully 16px but I can't promise that won't need a bit of tweaking or even be worth tweaking.

I have completely redone this thread because I completely redid the texture pack and I feel as though the thread needed a facelift as well. The texture pack is a cartoon/realistic style or my variation of it.

    Currently Working on:
    • Terrain File
    • Basic's that cover most areas so that I can continue without seeing through the world.

    To Do:
    • Change Stone too wavy (but would make an awesome water)
    • Fix up ores not liking how they came out
    • Everything else not listed on Finished
    • Name the Texture Pack
    • Do a jig

    Finished:

    Suggestions:
    • Change up Ores (will be done)

posted a message on Guide to Constructive Criticism
    +++ A Guide to Constructive Criticism +++

Topic Index: Assumptions | How to Give a Good Critique |

When someone comes here and shows us their work they are looking for one of two things. Either they want to be noticed or they respect the designers in this community and want help in order to improve or begin doing textures. When giving critiques to others it is important to know how. “I love it!” Although this feels nice it is by no means helpful. “I hate it!” Although mean, it is also not helpful.

    Criticism:
    a. The practice of analyzing, classifying, interpreting, or evaluating literary or other artistic works.

When giving feedback or criticism to others keep in mind that ultimately it is an opinion. Just because you may not think a Ninja Turtles pack (for example) is useful doesn't mean there are not 1,000's of other people who would disagree with you. It is equally as important to keep these things in mind when recieving critiques/feedback as well.

    +++ Assumptions +++

What you think when posting affects the type of critique and feedback you will give to others!

Bad Critique Assumptions: Everyone should be as good as you. Everyone should know what you do. If people don't know what you do then they must be stupid. How much time something took you is the same for others.

Good Critique Assumptions: This person wants to get better. This person is posting and asking so they must want help. The work shown is a start and has potential. You appreciate that they posted asking for our help as that is a compliment in itself.

+++ How to Give a Good Critique +++

Giving useful and helpful criticism is actually very hard to do but gets a lot easier with practice. While attending college for graphic design I was forced to critique others work openly. I got to see if I offended the person on the internet we do not get that privilege. Here are some important things to note when giving critiques to others.
    • What is the purpose of the style they are going for?
    • How can the person improve upon their work?
    • Any resources or examples you have that may help them?
    • What are some good things about their texture pack?
Although it is easier to just list everything you don’t like about something it by no means helps them get better and defeats the purpose of you giving feedback/criticism. A common general rule is for every 2 negative you give 1 positive. You can also do more negative and less positive as long as the general tone to your critique is positive (but this is hard to do).

    Helpful Critique
"I can see you were trying to do something different here and I think that is great. What I would suggest is to add more shading to your textures as it will help it to stand out from the crowd."

    Unhelpful Critique
    "Ugh, not this! Just stop."

    +++ Critique Suggestions +++

Things to Critique (if having trouble)
    • Style - Is the pack a certain style? Does it all match that style?
    • Colors - Do the overall color/tone match the theme of the pack?
    • Blend - Do textures blend together?
    • Tiling - Do the textures tile well or have issues?
    • Originality - Is it an original idea? (Celebrate Originality, Help them stand out)
    • Logic - Does color and design choice have a reason? (Are they used in a way that is apparent to the user, or is grass flat & pure red and stone flat and pure green with blue speckles, etc.)
Although I know it can be frustrating to see the same things over and over we also need to keep in mind that we weren't sitting with the person when they did it. Just because we thought it took no effort doesn't mean they didn't work on it for the last day to put out what you may have just called poo and claimed took no effort. If all else fails result to what my mom told me growing up "If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all."

Please comment and let me know what I can add in order to improve this post.

posted a message on Default Texture Pack [1.4.6] Download?
    Quote from The_Fool76

Just 'unzip' the .jar file and delete all the .class files and you will be left with the default textures.
I personally use 7-zip for this purpose.

I might actually have a .zip with just the defaults in it lying about here somewhere... *rummages*
    default.zip

That should be the latest textures from the 1.4.7 pre-release.

The_Fool76 is correct on how to do it. I would suggest however checking out the "All Inclusive Texture Guide" it has a section that covers getting files for mac and pc so that you are covered with detail. Check out that section here.
