posted a message on Futurepack Mod -- Discover new Dimensions

First time attempting to figure out the opti bench so I'm not sure if I'm doing something unusually stupid to it, but even if I am I don't think it should crash :D

    Futurepack-1.12.1-26.2.6

Tested with Futurepack as the only mod

    * Wrote a recipe crystal (for a torch) and loaded it into the opti bench
    * Upon placing an item in the opti bench the game crashes. Opti bench must be removed with an external editor before the world can be loaded again.

posted a message on [Journal & Pics] After a Year and a Half, I Finally Found a Jungle

You dodged a bullet not taming that parrot. I got one in my current vanilla SSP from a jungle only about 1k from my base. They won't fly with you (can't keep up with rocket elytra), they won't get in a boat with you, they won't ride on your shoulder in a boat and if there's a way to leash them I couldn't do it. I had to row back across the ocean, very slowly, stopping every few yards so the fluttering parrot wouldn't fall too far behind. I did eventually get it back home but just getting across 800 blocks of ocean took 2 minecraft days. Good luck with that 20k hike!

Mojang knew this was a problem, people on the Minecraft reddit kept telling them during the snapshots, people begged for a better way to move or carry parrots but noooo. WHY ARE THEY SO BAD AT PET MOBS REEEEE

Bet that cookie tasted good though ;)

Sounds like you're using a dungeon monster spawner block? It'll only spawn 6 maximum within a certain distance of the spawner, so if you want more you have to move them away somehow. The most popular way is to use water streams to push them. Lots of info and pics on the wiki here

posted a message on Storage That Actually Looks Good?

I like the quirky stuff myself. I was always fond of Monstro the Whale that I built in a 1.10 modded SSP

A flush piston door allowed ingress by opening up the whale's mouth, and all the chests were set up in the innards. Netherwart blocks for the tongue, and the shelves were made of bone blocks.

It was on two layers and there was an item sorter for mob drops on the lower level so I could dump all my rotten flesh and stuff in a chest at the entrance and collect it downstairs when I needed it.

Another one I made in a different world was the Tetris Building (of course: it's where I keep my blocks!). Inside's not that exciting, just a bunch of glass floors with chests set up against the walls, but it looked pretty cool from the outside.

I've also seen a few different people building giant chests, pumpkins or other oversized reproductions of Minecraft blocks to put their chests in.

Yeah you can slaughter them. They'll hate you of course, but as long as there are no village-spawned iron golems around that's not a problem ;) And you can always trade to get your popularity back up.

I bet that's it: if the doors you were using to farm them have actually been deactivated, they've latched onto some other door in your base and want to get to the "village". EDIT: Wait, didn't you have one free-roaming in the castle? Is he still around? Because if he's village-ified an internal door or two...

They have a thing where they try to clump together and socialize. Could be that? Or maybe they're trying to path to a door outside the breeder. If there's a door nearby in the direction they're pushing for you could try removing it and see if they settle down.

Mine always used to panic and cluster in corners at night (thinking they're outside) but I just saw the line saying yours are doing it in daytime too so...

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely looking forward to getting my hands on one and flying around; I just don't think it'll become my main method of transportation.

That's exactly what I said before I got my first one and tried out rocket boost... haha.

Regarding the resources discussion: If one is primarily a builder and doesn't have expensive tastes, it's not so strange to lack a diamond stockpile. With the exception of an early-game FortIII pick, I only make diamond gear once I've got Mending to put on it, and once I have my set of diamond gear+mending I stop bothering with diamonds at all. Gold, coal and iron I still want, along with a bit of lapis here and there, but I get all of that by caving. I only mine for stone to build with.

It can have downsides. On a SMP I had the great misfortune to die by glitching into bedrock under the nether roof, and lost everything I was carrying when the dropped items teleported onto the roof where they couldn't be recovered. I only had a bare handful of spare diamonds in my enderchest so I had to start up a whole new mineshaft in order to replace my gear and tools and buy some new shulker boxes from the guy who runs the end shop. But that was a very unusual situation as I hardly ever die in inaccessible locations.

I just don't think some get that I prefer going by donkey, reguardless of materials cost and whether it'd be more proficient (Minecart chest inventory + My inventory + donkey), and seemed determined that it I did this.

I'm a mule guy myself but I totally get you. Every SSP world and every survival server I commit to, getting hold of a mule is high priority. I've gotten ridiculously good at horseback parkour through bloody-minded detemination to boldly take my mount where no mule has gone before. It's comfy and it's fun and you get to take your time and see so much more of the world :)

posted a message on First time and/or most annoying / distracting mob encounters have you had?

I've been extremely wary of witches ever since I got rekt by a trio of them (how thematic) back in 1.8 when they didn't make any noise. I was trying to hunt slimes in a swamp. The witches ganked me with a poison/harming pot wombo combo, then killed me twice more as I tried to get my stuff back. And that was my first encounter with them. It was not a good time.

Since witches basically never shut up with the cackling now, they're not half the danger they used to be. I suppose I get snuck up on by baby zombies more than anything--just because they move so fast they're sometimes at my feet before I even hear the first growl.

    IGN is octopuspizza.
I'm all right at medieval, depending on the kind of style you want: not keen on the super detailed as I get spergy about use of buttons, pressure plates etc as decorative elements... redstone components should be actively doing things not just looking pretty!
I like fluff and lore though. You won't just get "a medieval house" off me, you'll get a blacksmith, a papermill, a chandler's etc.
Are you going for realistic or a more fantasy thing?

    Did somebody say road thread?

For actual long-distance travel, I tend to use the nether like a sane man.

That nether fortress never knew what hit it. Nobody gets in the way of the Roman Engineers!

Sure I have elytra, and sure absolutely anything else is quicker and more efficient, but there's just something so comfy about a road network. Particularly if it's built to fit in with the terrain, winding through valleys, up and down hills...

I find roads useful for inspiration too. Where the road runs first, other constructions will spring up subsequently: inns, post-houses, farms, communities. I should like, eventually, to have overworld roads running to every meaningful location in the SSP world I'm currently working with--even the stronghold, and that mesa 4k blocks away... Not sure what I'll do about ocean crossings yet, maybe try to concoct some sort of glass tube subway or simply build seaports and ships for fluff.

posted a message on Why wanting to build in survival mode ?
    Quote from RobertFrans»

Well, the point of those real life large cathedrals is to actually make you feel very small, as an ant. You are meeting God after all. So if a Minecraft cathedral does that, it fulfills that very purpose pretty good, as I would say. ;)

Yes, I thought someone might say that. But there's a difference between being an ant in the house of God and being an ant because the pews are ten feet tall and you can't get over the door step without flying LOL. The super-giant buildings aren't usable for their supposed function and that's what I was trying to get at there.

posted a message on Why wanting to build in survival mode ?

Firstly, as a dedicated survival player, I enjoyed the OP very much so thanks for the good read :D

There is an acronym on the Minecraft General of a certain imageboard that I rather liked: MAWPC. When they say a world or mod has become MAWPC they mean it in a disparaging sort of way: "Might As Well Play Creative". It's true that doing it oneself with resources acquired by hand carries a great deal of satisfaction.

One thing about which you didn't go into a lot of detail is purpose. Builds made in Survival generally exist for a reason: to be lived in as homes, to be utilized as farms or grinders, to be played with as redstone minigames, etc.

    As you say:
"The survival players have a larger more pragmatic view of the builds than the creative players. And, typically, the creative players will not build the inside of their buildings, the survival players do because they use it."

None of the three primary reasons you mentioned are particularly relevant to me. But this is. For me the purpose element would be the absolute heart and core of why I first started playing Minecraft in survival and have never since moved away from survival. As most people do I keep a couple of superflats around to mess with palettes, floor plans and redstone, but other than that I have no interest in Creative except as a testing ground for survival building work. A Survival building is a living thing. A Creative-built construction generally does nothing except stand there and look nice, and I say to myself "oh that's neat" and move on.

Related to this, a lot of the very large and visually impressive Creative constructions are of a scale that makes no sense to the player moving around inside them. We've all seen the giant cathedrals that go from bedrock to height limit with 1:1 meter/block reconstructions, very nice to look at but the player is an ant crawling on the floor by scale. I would rather walk around a less detailed, less impressive cathedral-build where I am a human being inside it, instead of an ant. There's a little caravel in my avatar image, it was a survival build and it's pretty small. If I scaled it up I could get more detail into it, much better waterline, curves etc; but then I wouldn't be a human being moving around on that caravel any more. In other words: This kills the immersion :D

A second element that I find with survival builds is that they are more memorable. Where the creative build just popped out of nowhere in the world one day, the survival build has stories built into its fabric, and I expect that I'm far from alone in enjoying that.

I've been working on a museum build on a little survival server and people came together to collect quartz as a community effort and you know, it's been a lot of fun. It's taken months to get the amount of quartz required, but I expect we'll all enjoy that finished museum build much more than if I'd just thrown it together in creative in a couple of days, because we can look at it and know the story of every block.

Similarly, someone built a castle and wanted a beacon at each corner turret, so I got my Looting III sword out and helped with the skull hunt. Looking up at the castle now I can think to myself, yes, that wither was killed on such and such date, that one was made with the skulls I donated from our base's war room, that one is the one that took a week to find enough skulls to make... In multiplayer such experiences can create a strong sense of community attachment and lore.

Do you want regular rainforest, temperate or tropical?
    Assuming all three...
1266834788341037075 starts you in eucalyptus forest, there's a temperate rainforest at -270/70, rainforest at -330/580 and tropical rainforest at -3000/3000
BONUS: if you hike all the way out to the tropical rainforest there's a Sacred Springs just next door
Tested on BoP build 2267 in 1.11.2 and BoP build 2291 in 1.12.

My basemate and I made a 40k+ trip on a server to raid a mansion. We went the long way on the outward trip (20k straight south then 21k straight east, following the map) and did have to stop once to top up elytra durability but that was easily done just by finding a cave and whacking out all the coal/redstone.

Regarding horrible NPC AI... well, isn't that why there's a mod that's literally called "Better than Wolves"? LOL. The vanilla companion animals are such a waste of a concept...

By the way you can reveal ghost blocks by attempting to place something in the glitched spot, no need to relaunch the game. Wish I'd known that when I was using leaves/shears to drain an ocean temple.

    Good progress so far!
