posted a message on [128x]&[64x][1.12] Smooth Realistic - a modern HD pack
I like this pack a lot. But... a couple of questions:

    1) Why does this look so $*#%$&% DARK on my system?? When I first loaded it, it took me a few minutes to realize it was noon in the game, not midnight. Putting the Brightness slider to 100% didn't help at all. (And bear in mind, I'm comparing this to numerous other texture packs I've run through in the past day or two, so it's not like I'm totally stunned and have my monitor turned off. Maybe you have yours set really bright?)

    2) Paradoxically, why is stone so bright? If I crank up my monitor so I can see outdoors, mines become dazzling. That doesn't seem right, somehow.

Don't mean to sound overly critical. Otherwise, I'm liking what you've done... a lot of gorgeous work. Unfortunately, that's the way it is with texture packs... often 95% stuff you love, just a couple of details that force you back to your old standby (whatever it may be).

Uploaded a version now.. Let me know if there's anything wrong in it.

Much appreciated. Seems mostly okay. It's hard to be sure about animated textures - some work, some don't. (I haven't messed with mc_patcher or Optifine yet.) Water is darker, not sure whether that's the pack or something else.

But I do have the old low-res moon, instead of your big photo-realistic one.

Yeah, doesn't work for me either. I open it, choose the pack I want to convert (minidoku) and it says it successfully converted, but one I get is exactly the same as the unconverted one.

Are you looking for the right filename? The original ZIP doesn't get altered, which is exactly what you want. Instead, Unstitcher creates a new ZIP with something like "unstitched" in FRONT of the old name. So if your original name is a long way away in the alphabet, you may not see the new file. Had me fooled for a while...!

Is this pack dead, or is there a v1.5-compatible version in the works? Or has it moved to some other thread somewhere?

I've tried, but I can't find another pack that I like half as much. Amazing, isn't it?

posted a message on 1.3.1 is Now Live!
I tried 1.3.1 and quickly reverted to 1.2.5. Why?

    1. Performance seemed noticeably choppy. Which is ridiculous... I just finished building a brand-new system, which runs previous releases smooth as silk.

    2. Viewing distance came up lower than in 1.25. No idea if this is a bug or a feature, but definitely not welcome. (Yes, I know I can meddle with this using various mods. That's not the point.)

    3. Most important, when I started digging coal in brand-new world, I started getting experience for it. That was the deal-breaker. Might as well remove the experience system entirely, if you're going to hand out points for digging, walking and breathing.

I've been with Minecraft since way back in the olden days, but this is the first release I've seen that seemed noticeably worse than the one before, in both build quality and feature set. Good thing I made backups. I fear that 1.31 will need a LOT of fixing before I'll be willing to install it again. And even more strongly, I fear that unless Mojang gets its butt in gear and develops a clear vision for the future of Minecraft, few of us will ever make it to version 2.0.0.

Whoa... NO CLOUDS???? Who the heck asked for that?

I do really like the new high-res 'harvest moon.' But I'm not giving up clouds. The sky just looks way too blank without them, especially in the daytime.

It seems to me what most of us liked about this pack was that it stayed true to the original textures, giving the game a sharper look without going off in any drastic new direction. Ditching clouds is pretty drastic. Guess I'll have to stick with the 'classic' HDCraft 1.4.

Just a quick word regarding the use of DVan's work: I think you're doing absolutely the right thing. You've tried to get in touch with him. His texture pack has become all but unusable, and someone needs to take over. No way this worthwhile project should die, just because its originator can't or won't speak up.

I know copyright doesn't tend to work that way, any more. But copyright is totally broken. Many great works are now trapped in 'copyright limbo,' after being abandoned by their creators (for whatever reason). But it's highly debatable that this sort of draconian copyright would apply in this case. There's not much 'intellectual property' in a few textures that were heavily based on Notch's originals, and were given away for free in any case. This is a small community project, not a Hollywood blockbuster.

Bottom line, you're working in good faith, for the benefit of a lot of devoted users. Nothing to apologize for. If and when DVan reappears, he should be grateful that you've kept his seat warm.

Uploaded version 1,2. Fixed some items and the cloth colours look better. =)

Looking just about perfect - thanks!!

With B&B seemingly abandoned, it's fantastic to see someone putting in the effort to continue the tradition. What you've got in HDCraft is the perfect balance - true to the original, but sharpened up enough so as not to disgrace a big-screen monitor. For me, there's no going back...
