Or you could, you know, not make enough room for you to fall down the shaft. Or remember to close the lid.
Ya but this is for when you are actively dropping items down. Falling down into lava/fire would not be fun. It only uses 1 redstone wire, so it is not expensive either.
I don't have anything over mine to keep me from falling in because of my decor, so this helps if I was ever to fall in.
Simply connect the redstone so whenever you leave the pressure plate, the water slows your descent long enough for the second trapdoor to close and catch you, dealing no damage and allowing you to walk away unharmed. This is of course useful if you don't have anything over the first trapdoor which would prevent you from falling in in the first place.
I don't know if this has been done before, but today I noticed blocks get destroyed when smashed between two pistons, which led to the idea of a cobblestone generator.
First, cobble is made with lava and water...
...and then it is pushed forwards by one piston (which can't be seen)...
...and finally destroyed between two other pistons.
The sign is to prevent water from escaping between the piston movements.
The whole thing runs on a loop and saves the need for using a pickaxe to destroy the cobble.
These are the stairs down to the bed and chest. The left waterfall is the item drop and it curls to right in front of the bed, so on respawn, items are instantly picked up. You must sleep in the bed to reset your spawn point.
This is how you get out, right-click the cart to warp outside and then exit the cart. Destroying the cart/track will still not let you in.
This is the front, the left hole is where you drop your items in.
And you simply drop them in.
After you drop all of your items in, you must commit suicide. When you respawn, you will be inside the vault and able to collect your items and put them in a chest.

Wood = Pressure plate
Slab = trapdoor
Painting = Sign
Red wool = redstone
