Minecraft runs better in Fedora 14 than Windows for me...
Anyways, there's a couple other things you can do to optimize the running of the minecraft JAR, by optimizing the java VM, You can also do this with minecraft server for a notable performance increase...
Here are the current optimized launch options I use
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -XX:+UseFastAccessorMethods -XX:+AggressiveOpts -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseAdaptiveGCBoundary -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=500 -XX:SurvivorRatio=16 -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:UseSSE=3 -XX:ParallelGCThreads=(Number of processor cores you have, for me it's 2) -jar /media/storage/minecraft.jar
This uses the aggressive optimizations, parallel garbage collector, and some other tuning options. This will significantly increase performance in linux AND windows. You can adjust the memory to whatever your system is capable of (I'd wager about 33% of ram unless your sole purpose is to be playing minecraft)

Last night, for an event in our arena... one of the event GMs made teams of warriors, and then would spawn massive amounts of zombies and skeletons.. battle royale, winner gets prizes... some of the best fun ive had in MC in awhile haha. We have a very active staff, from guides to GMs. Help is always just around the corner, and everyone is extremely friendly.
Tried a couple of servers running it, /home works, borderlands works, death notifications work.. /item works
This release is (of course) very buggy.. The author said he will be hammering out bugs in the next couple of days, so give it time.
It's very buggy and lots of plugins don't work, but it's a start as we wait for bukkit.. all credit goes to the OP of that forum topic, i'm just spreading the word because having /home again is a godsend on my favorite server.
Other things confirmed to work: CraftIRC, kits, spawn, warps
MySQL does not seem to be working with kMod at the moment, keep this in mind when making your decision to try it out.
**PLEASE*** DO NOT GO TO THE BUKKIT OR hMod TEAM FOR SUPPORT ON THIS UNOFFICIAL FORK! Do not show up in #hey0 or #hh asking for help, because you will not get it! Your best bet is to post all bugs/things you find to the forum post above, or as a reply to this post, and I will manually group bug/error reports together and send them off to Hclewk.. but i'm sure he'll find this topic soon enough.
*The guy (hclewk) also has a spot up on that post to accept donations... I, for one, plan to donate.. considering he spent probably the entirety of his personal time yesterday updating a dead mod so it would work... albeit partly. So, if you're able to, I suggest a small donation to encourage future behavior from the developers on our community.
So.. while I'm waiting for bugs to get fixed and plugins to be updated, I had an idea for my house in my favorite SMP server...
I imagine a series of note blocks hooked up to a clock generator that is triggered by a series of pressure plates that you could arm/disarm.. could it be done?
If your going to make this your going to have to know everything about redstone, you know that right?
I just started playing so no, I don't know everything about redstone, but I'm learning more every day... been playing a couple days and have constructed a few simple locking mechanisms for doors using and and xnor gates using series of fake and real levels, pressure plates... have constructed a couple clock generators.. i have a few ideas for working this out but would have to play around

Previous Servers: None.. played a few open ones here and there, lots of single player.
Plan to Contribute: I plan to, like I said earlier, mine and build until my eyes bleed! I plan to become a very active member of the playerbase as well as the community. If I like the server I most definitely plan on contibuting in a monetary sense as well.

I donated 3 days after I started playing here.. very active mods/admins, great plugins and more being added as time goes on
